Full Recap

The King asks Charles to escort his sister to her betrothed, Margaret, and promotes him to Duke of Suffolk so that he can have the proper station to do so. The King trusts Charles (a known womanizer) only because he is betrothed to Elizabeth Grey. The envoys from the Holy Roman-Emperor are driven in a carriage with Thomas More, and express their misgivings, saying "We heard some rumors, Mr. More, that the Cardinal advocates French interests." They soon meet with Cardinal Wolsey and determine to cement the treaty between the two nations by betrothing the King's daughter to the Emperor. The rumors about the Cardinal cause the Emperor to offer him material rewards. The envoys are entertained by a play in which the King himself participates- and where Anne catches his notice, with the bribed help of the director. Princess Margaret begins expressing her unhappiness with her betrothed, who is old and plagued by gout. Duke Charles meets Margaret to learn of her plans to travel to Portugal. The Emperor is invited to the King's court. The King orders the construction of another warship, saying "What we lack in men, we can more than make up for in ships. We are an island race, Cardinal. We have the best and bravest sailors in the world. I will have the greatest navy." Thomas Boleyn is made a Knight and Comptroller of the King's household. Anne, it is learned, is to come to court as a Lady in waiting to the Queen. We learn Anne has a poet lover, that she leaves broken hearted. Duke Charles' friends get angry and so drunk over Charles' recent elevation in status that "Even if she [a woman that they would bed] was a complete Venus, I couldn't satisfy her in my dejected state." The Queen tries and fails again to heal her marriage. We see that the Cardinal is under great tension, being roughly massaged by his mistress. Thomas Tallis witnesses the arrival of the new ladies-in-waiting for the Queen, and Anne catches his eye. The King has More read his criticism of Luther, to be delivered to the Pope in Rome, by the newly knighted Sir More. All Lutheran books that could be found were ordered burned. It is learned that the King of France knows of the treaty talks- and the Cardinal is quick to find a scapegoat. The Emperor arrives. Richard Pace, the secretary of state, is blamed the traitor who works for the French. Anne cunningly begins to insinuate herself more into the King's notice. Margaret says that she would marry her betrothed only if she were allowed to marry whomever she wished "When he's dead, which can't be long." The Queen explains her martial problems to the Emperor. Duke Charles learns of his friends' jealousy. The King dreams about Anne, who is very seductive, and tells him that he must seduce her. The King and the Emperor sign the treaty. The Cardinal explains to the King that the French had paid Pace a pension to spy on English affairs, which strikes the viewers as odd since he hadn't mentioned it when passing judgment on Pace. The King orders jewels fit for a queen- for Anne it appears. Pace screams futilely in his prison that it is the Cardinal who is receiving a French pension.
