Her father put his foot down, and tennis was out. British by birth, she considers herself a sort of honorary Yank, having attended boarding school at Thacher in Ojai, California. Joely's family, the Redgrave's, is an English acting dynasty, spanning four generations. Members of the family worked in theatre beginning in the nineteenth century, and later in film and television. Some family members have also written plays and books. Both her parents and maternal grandparents were famous actors. Vanessa Redgrave, Joely's mother, is the most prominent, being the only British actress having won Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe, Cannes, Screen Actor Guild, and Emmy Awards. Vanessa has portrayed royals such as Anne Boleyn in the film about Sir Thomas More, A Man for All Seasons (1966), Guinevere in Camelot (1967), the lead role of Queen Mary in Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), Empress Elizabeth of Russia in Young Catherine (1991), and in 2011 she will appear with her daughter Joely in Anonymous portraying Queen Elizabeth I; Joely is set to appear as the younger Princess Elizabeth Tudor. Beginning in the 80s film became her life, from small parts in Wetherby (1985) to BBC dramas such as Lady Chatterley (1993) (TV) to today's Disney studio going to the dogs in 101 Dalmatians (1996). Joely was married to producer Tim Bevan, but later divorced after 1992. Tim Bevan was the executive producer for The Tudors during 2007-2008 (Season 1&2). Played in title character in a revival of Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windemere's Fan" - Theatre Royal Haymarket, London (2002). Played the title character in "Madame Melvile", a new play by Richard Nelson - Promenade Theater, New York (2001). Played the title character in a revival of Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windemere's Fan" - Old Vic Theatre, Bristol (1990).
