I have sent out a general message to members informing everybody of the Tudor Series Study. This will be the thread for us all to discuss any aspect of the programme that we wish. It has been suggested that we aim for one episode a week. So we will start off with the first episode and try to get any discussion on that finished by Sunday 29th January. If comments from the first week spill over onto the second it will be okay but if we can try to keep to one episode a week that would be helpful. Also I should point out that if you can only comment occasionally on an episode that is fine.

As we all know, Anne Boleyn was executed May 19th 1536. Her fall from power occurred in a very short period of time. Anne was a woman in many ways admirable and certainly always fascinating. I thought it might be a valuable pursuit for us to document here, on this thread, the timeline of her last month.
Between now, April 20th and May 19th, let's cite an event for each day leading up to Anne's death. On some days there will be more than one event. Don't jump ahead. Let's look at each day and what happened on that day in 1536. The events are fairly well documented and I hope will offer interesting discussion. April 20th . In 1536 this was a Thursday. After a meeting a few days before between Cromwell, the King and Chapuys, in which the King was not as enthusiastic about an alliance with the Emperor Charles as Cromwell had made him out to be, a mortified Cromwell retreated to his house in Stepney.

Many of us have read Hilary Mantel's novel "Wolf Hall." Many of us would like to read it but perhaps have not had the chance or the time, and some of us are ambivalent about reading it. Whatever the case, this thread is meant to be a place to discuss the novel in detail and also to discuss some of the representations of Tudor life and characters that Mantel offers us.
The novel is controversial, due to both its writing style and its presentation of Thomas Cromwell in a sympathetic light. The sequel to Wolf Hall is due to come out in May of this year, so this is a good time to read it if that is something that you have wanted to do. I think a controversial work is a very exciting thing to discuss and I hope that this thread will be lively and entertaining to us all, no matter what your opinion of the novel is. . You may find it brilliant or you may find it frustrating. It is OK to like it or not like it. If you really hate it you will probably stop reading, but if it keeps your interest enough to make valid points then that is welcomed. I am looking for other people's insights to this novel and to share my own. I am also hoping to be able to discuss the text in detail because I think it is an important contemporary piece of fiction about a subject we are all fascinated by: the Court of King Henry VIII. We know the characters, we know the age, we know the story. So let's lend our minds to this book as well as allow the book to show us something. Let's engage with it as Tudor enthusiasts and see where it takes us.

Now that all 4 seasons are done, let's see who our top 3 characters are.
Here is a list of the main characters/actors and each member can vote for... 3 with +1 ... and ... 3 with -1 per day. (a total of 6 votes) per day. Go to the last page, copy and paste the last list you see and add and subtract your votes. For the purposes of this vote, it is a list of characters from ALL the seasons so it has been whittled down to just the main or most famous ones. The list would have been too long for all of them. You can vote EITHER based on the actor OR the historical character depending on what personally appealed to you the most. (This should keep us busy for a while!) When one character/actor reaches 100, we will stop the game and see who the top 3 turn out to be. Pope Paul III/ Peter O'Toole (10) Sir Thomas Wyatt/ Jamie Thomas King (10) Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey/ David O'Hara (10) Sir Edward Seymour/ Max Brown (10) Sir Thomas Boleyn/ Nick Dunning (10) Sir Thomas More/ Jeremy Northam (10) Cardinal Thomas Wolsey/ Sam Neill (10) Sir Thomas Cromwell/ James Frain (10) Princess Mary Tudor/ Sarah Bolger (10) Catherine Parr/ Joely Richardson (10) Katherine Howard/ Tamzin Merchant (10) Anne of Cleves/ Joss Stone (10) Jane Seymour/ Annabelle Wallis & Anita Briem (10) Anne Boleyn/ Natalie Dormer (10) Katherine of Aragon/ Maria Doyle Kennedy (10) Sir Charles Brandon/ Henry Cavill (10) King Henry VIII/ Jonathan Rhys Meyers (10)

I first got interested in history when I read Gone With The Wind about 6 years ago. After that I went on a civil war study and read all I could about the times. I wasn't so interested in the war itself, but in the people and how they lived. then I read "Cane River", and got interested in slavery and read a lot on that subject. Several years ago I read Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl". I admit that at the time, I knew nothing. I didn't even remember she died at the end! What can I say....I was a product of US public schools. lol After that, I started to read both fiction and non-fiction books on the Tudor family and it became a real obsession. I was thrilled when The Tudors came out, though as I didn't have Showtime at the time, I wasn't even aware of the series until they started advertising Season 2. I Netlixed the first season and quickly caught up. I'm pretty well versed in Tudor history at this point, I've read probably more than 30 books on the Tudors and other European monarchs. My obsession continues!

Hey guys!,
Just thought to start a thread on lyrics that remind you of a character/couple/friendship/enemyship because a lot of songs these days remind me of those things. I'll start the thread of by saying the lyrics in 'Love the way you lie' by Rihanna and Eminem that say "This must be what happens when a tournado meets a volcanoe" reminds me of Henry and Anne Boleyn. Any lyrics that remind you of someone?

Most of us have favourite scenes in the series. I thought it would be interesting to run a poll to find out which one is the most popular overall. I will start the suggestions off with the following:-
Henry & Anne's Volta Dance Henry as a young man ( with the flashbacks to his younger days, final episode) Anne's Execution Episode

Which moments are your favorite ones during the seasons? There are so many but for me I would have to say
*When Wyatt comes to Annes execution-so sad and moving *Wolsey commits suicide, love how they link the theatric scene "wolsey is going to hell" with his suicide *When prince Edward shows Henry the portrait of Jane and the thimble *When Wyatt and Smeaton looks across the room (right before everything is falling apart) saying something like " there´s´something going on, I just don´t know what" and also the scene where Wyatt leans against the wall when he is about to be arrested. *Jane Seymours funeral with the beautiful theme played * The flashback in the final scene where Henry´s life is passing by There are many more.. Which ones are yours?

For those that are interested in taking part in the book study for the above mentioned book. It would be good if we can start reading now. The book is set in six sections, so I suggest we read the first section in about 10 days this would take us to around the 22nd October. If you would like to join in but know that you cannot start now please add your comments later if you wish This is just a guideline for us to follow.

We have quite a comprehensive list of favourite moments. Please put three pluses and three minuses against the entries. The idea here is to answer the question on the previous post and then set one of your own. As I am starting there obviously isn't a question already set. So I will put the first question. Whoever answers it should then set one of their own. It can be anything Tudor related. Hopefully a few people will join in because the main thing is obviously not to end up answering your own question.
Question 1) What was the relationship between Jasper Tudor and the founder of the Tudor dynasty Henry VII?.

I thought it would be nice to have a poll that recognizes the part that people in a key supporting role played in the success of The Tudors.. I have compiled a list and tried not to make it too long. I hope I have not left out anybodies particular favourite!
We can use the same formula as we are using in the poll for the main actors. I.E three pluses and three minuses and remember to copy and cut and paste the list above your entry and take out all the previous pluses and minuses before you add your score. When we get to the final six we can revert to the plus one and minus one scoring until we have a winner King Francis/ Emmanuel Leconte (10) William Compton / Kris Holden-Ried (10) Thomas Cranmer/Hans Matheson (10) Thomas Tallis/Joe Van Moyland (10) Duke of Norfolk/Henry Czemy (10) Duke of Buckingham/Steven Waddington (10) Eustace Chapuys/ Anthony Brophy (10) George Boleyn/Padriac Delaney (10) Jane Rochford/Joanne King (10) Francis Bryan/Alan Van Spring (10) Anne Stanhope/Emma Hamilton (10) Mark Smeaton/David Alpay (10) Richard Rich/Rod Hallett (10) Thomas Culpeper/Torrence Coombes (10) Princess Margaret/Gabrielle Anwar (10) Bishop Fisher/Boscoe Hogan (10) Stephen Gardiner/Simon Ward (10) Robert Aske/Gerard McSorley (10) Anthony Knivert/Callum Blue (10)

One of the most asked questions on the wiki has been, when or if there will be another series of The Tudors carrying on with Edward, Jane Grey, Mary and Elizabeth. Michael Hirst the creator and writer of the series was recently at the Mary Rose Museum and was asked this question and you can listen to his answer here :

There were a great deal of gory execution scenes in The Tudors. I thought it might be interesting to vote for the one that we found the most disturbing. We put a plus by the one we found the most gory and a minus against the one that made us shudder the least. Eventually we will be left with just the winner. Please adjust the number when you plus and minus. Please just one vote per person per day.
Anne Boleyn's Execution (10) George Boleyn & the men who were executed with him (10) Catherine Howard & Jane Boleyn (10) Thomas Culpeper & Francis Dereham (10) Robert Aske (10) Thomas Cromwell (10) Duke of Buckingham (10) Thomas More (10) Bishop John Fisher (10) Anne Askew (10)
