Burning at the stake for cats
Apr 3 2012, 12:01 PM EDT | Post edited: Apr 3 2012, 12:01 PM EDT
I have learnt something quite odd. In the medieval time, cats were seen as the symbol as the devil. Under her reign, Mary I would have cats burnt because they represented the " devil": the prostestant beliefs. And it when the same under Elizabeth I, for the opposite reason: representation of catholic beliefs.

Here is the link to the video where I learnt this ( It is in French):

What do you think of it?

I thought that cats were burned because they were supposed to be witches' familiars. A practice that back fired badly when a group of rats from asia jumped ship at an English port. Do you find this valuable?

I am not sure that Mary I did that however....it is known that "In 1484, Pope Innocent empowered the Inquisition to burn all cats and cat lovers. As a result of the drastic drop in the cat population, the number of rodents increased. Millions of rats carrying fleas infected with bubonic plague spread the Black Death across Europe. When the persecution of cats ended in the late 17th century, they began hunting rats again, and Europeans saw the advantage of having these natural hunters keep their towns' rodent free.

At her coronation, Elizabeth I had a cat burned in a wicker basket to symbolize the releasing of demons. On one St. John's Day, for example, there were 24 cats publicly burnt in a kind of festival, with King Charles IX of France (1560-1574), court and people participating"

I know eh? LOL So glad I was born in this century! Actually you know something weird....when I was in Sweden, they said that if someone shoots a cat, there is no law against it unlike dogs where they almost treat it like killing a human. So even in different countries its different.

People can be so ignorant sometimes lol. Seriously? You have a cat and the Inquisition is at your door? Not fond of cats but someone should have showed them how the cats kept the rat population in check! Were they like this with any other animals? Do you find this valuable?

A few years ago someone I worked with told me that if there was a rumour of plague she would come round and burn my pet rats! So there are still people about with strange ideas about culling pets. Do you find this valuable?
