Friendship with Mary Tudor?
Mar 2 2012, 6:09 AM EST | Post edited: Mar 2 2012, 6:09 AM EST
I've just read a comment upon a video on youtube about Lady Mary Tudor and Thomas Cromwell. It seems that they were friends: " [...] It's based in historical fact, they shared a friendship. He gave her gifts at Christmastide, and even had a ring made for her (though the King saw it and ended up gifting it to her instead). [...] "

What do you think of it?

I have never heard of that, and will have to look into it. Maybe he figured it would not hurt to make friends with someone who is the King's daughter?
Also how would they get past the Catholic/Protestant beliefs?

I have never heard of that either and would be extremely cautious about believing it.
If Cromwell was friendly with Mary I imagine it would have been to have made her more malleable to her father's wishes.

The mention of the item of jewellery doesn't ring true either (forgive the pun lol!) I cannot see Henry taking a ring from Thomas Cromwell that was intended for Mary and then giving it to his daughter himsefl. Henry could afford to buy his own gifts lol.

Cromwell did help Mary with some minor problems. He was a pragmatic man who realised the political implications of Mary being badly treated. Whether he had a genuine liking for her is hard to tell. He is on record making admiring comments about her mother but I can't recall he expressed any opinion about Mary herself. As to the question of religion Protestants didn't exist as such only different levels of reform. Cromwell although more radical than many reformers would have kept his true religious feelings quiet. Mary did have a friendship with another reformer Anne Stanhope so perhaps it is possible that she and Cromwell were on good terms. Do you find this valuable?

When Cromwell was arrested, one of the things that he his enemies accused him of was a plot to marry Mary. There is no evidence to support this plot though. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I know I have read somewhere (and of course I can't find it when I want it) that he gave her a mare one year for Christmas. He also had correspondence with her and apparently a friendship of sorts as she was often reliant on him in her earlier years. The friendship I believe is mentioned by historian Carolly Erickson, Anna Whitelock, or John Edwards in one of their works on Mary (I've read so much on her, it's a jumble in my head). Now the ring indecent the commenter mentioned did happen (sorry to dispute you royalfalcon) it was documented in one of Chapuys' letters and can be found in "The Life and Letters of Thomas Cromwell" (Volume 1 not 2) as a footnote on page 144. Apparently, the ring was made of gold with the image of Mary, Jane, and Henry, and a long late description about "obedience" and Henry took it citing his desire to give it to her, though some suggest Henry did it because rumours were going about that Cromwell desired a marriage with the Princess and Henry wanted to make clear it was not going to happen. Now in reference to Catholic/Protestant beliefs. Mary was friends with more than one Protestant in her day (Catherine Parr, Anne Stanhope--her "good gossip Nan", etc.). Do you find this valuable?

Woah, I would never have guessed this, on google there is like an online book which gives account of Mary's expenses and there is a part where Cromwell is threatening her. If Cromwell gave her that ring, is that even appropriate? Sounds like something a family member would give her. Do you find this valuable?

I agree. If there had been the slightest evidence it would have been included in the attainder.
