Henry, unlike his brother, was brought up with his mother and sisters. It seems he had a great affection for her and was devestated by her death. David Starkey has said that judging by their similiar handwriting that Elizabeth taught her young son to write which I think indicates a close relationship. He named his daughters after his favourite sibling Mary and his mother Elizabeth.

A thrilling read about his early life which is only marginally fictionalized is the autobiography of henry VIII by margaret george. Hentry goes into detail about his relationship with his loving mother and sister mary rose :) His father actually thought very little of henry, and favoured their eldest and heir to the throne as was custom of the day, Arthur in fact he had told henry he would NEVER be king. Also from what I had studied, henry's father was a very frugal man who lived on as little as possible, he did not give into the frivolous lifestyle like was the trend in France, but henry broke his fathers tradition and lived a very glamorous and sexual lifestyle Do you find this valuable? |

Henry VII was understandably cautious. He had fought for the crown and had to see off challenges throughout his reign. I have just started a book called Winter King which is all about his life - it looks like it will be a very interesting read. I think the autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George is good entertainment - however, it is still a book of fiction at the end of the day. .

You would think with a loving relationship with his mother, he would have nice ones with his daughters and wives. I also heard about the writing similarities between Elizabeth of York and Henry VIII. Never understood why Henry VII was so greedy when it came to money yet never spent it. I guess he was trying to build the wealth of England.

Princess212, I think one of the reasons Henry senior appeared greedy with money was because he knew what it was like not to have much. He left his son well provided for, the coffers were full.

That I can understand, but what of the two men (i don't remember their names) who he employed to collect money and they did so using unfair means which lead to them being executed by Henry VIII? He does not have to scam his own people in order to get money.

Were their means unfair ? In biographies of Henry VIII I have read they usually give Henry executing these two ministers less for their behaviour and more to win the affection of the people.

I thought that their practices was the reason they were so highly hated amongst the people and Henry took advantage of that.

The two men conerned were Edmund Dudley (Robert's grandfather) and Richard Empson. They were made scapegoats at the beginning of Henry VIII's reign although they were only doing Henry VII's bidding - let us face it tax collectors are never popular and it was a great Public Relations exercise at the start of Henry VIII's reign.

Henry VII used every trick in the book to fleece his subjects, so it is not surprising that he was pretty unpopular by the end of his reign. However, he was also capable of lavish spending on state occasions - a trait inherited by his son. Do you find this valuable? |

And his Granddaughter Elizabeth. All three monarchs were experts in public relations and spin.
