I am watching David Starkey documentaries and he mentionned that Elisabeth had cast away anne boleyn from her mind ... is that true ? or did she admire or feel sorry for her mother ?

There is quite a good article by Nasim Tadghighi on our controversies section of the wiki here :

Showing she seems to have had positive thoughts for her mother.

Elizabeth wore a ring with her mother's picture inside.

Anne was a devoted mother to Elizabeth..as much as she was allowed to be. I don't believe Elizabeth bore her any ill feelings. For what?

It would be interesting to know what Elizabeth knew about Anne. Of course growing up the official line was that her mother was a traitor who deserved death. But there must have been people close to Elizabeth in her household who would have known the true story. Did anyone ever talk to her about Anne ? What would they have said ? I have often wondered what Elizabeth thought about her mother's execution. Everything that I have read points to the fact that she cared about her father. I imagine what she most likely thought was that her mother was innocent but that in all probability her father thought she was guilty. If you think about it that would be the easiest opinion to try and live with. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Anne Boleyn's Chaplain Matthew Parker was known to have said that she had entrusted Elizabeth into his care before she was executed. He was close to Elizabeth and she eventually appointed him Archbishop of Canterbury as queen. It doesn't take a huge leap of speculation to believe that Parker who was close to her mother, wouldn't have told her about Anne. I tend to think Anne may have even written or spoken to him ...words of encouragement for her future. Most mothers who know they are going to die, leave something for their children. Matthew Parker would more than likely have told her what happened to her mother in some detail and in a sympathetic way.

In Joanna Denny's book "Anne Boleyn" it's been hinted that maybe Elizabeth remembered more about her mother than she had let on. This could be seen through her attitude to marriage. It would have been totally understandable for Elizabeth to develop a horror towards marriage given the circumstances! 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Then there were her father's other marriages and the unhappy union of her sister Mary as further evidence of the risky nature of becoming a wife. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

True :) she also did not make it any secret that she did not want to marry and that goes back to what happened to her mother. She also held a locket with a portrait of her mother anne inside. There is a very good mini series movie, which depicts this Elizabeth R with Glenda jackson. if this is based on any accuracy then it would appear that elizabeth did hold her mother in a higher steed than she let on however she was not vocal about it and who could blame her? during henrys reign she would have learnt very early on how to keep quiet about issues and memories surrounding her ill fated mother
poor girl. Well poor mary too, it must have been heart breaking being separated from your mothers who loved you unconditionally

When Elizabeth died they found out that she had had the crown ring made into a locket with pictures of Anne Boleyn and herself. I think that shows she respected her mother and looked up to her. Anyway during most of her life her mother was someone people didn't mention and since Elizabeth already was in a dangerous position she probably chose to hide her true feelings about her mother.

She was three years old at the time of her mother's death (well, two and half). How much would she seriously remember? Joanna Denny didn't write so much as a Bio of Anne Boleyn; more of a hagiography. Deeply inaccurate, and full of speculation.

She might not have had memories of her mother but she would have learnt about her from the people around her. If she kept the potrait of her mother in a ring for sentimental reasons (it is of course possible that it was there as a warning but I doubt that) then she must have been given a positive image of her mother from someone.
