Tudor Conspiracy Theories
Dec 29 2011, 6:29 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 29 2011, 6:29 PM EST
Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, whether it's plausible or not. Is there any famous Tudor conspiracies or ones you've heard from people less than qualified to make such assumptions?

I heard the most ridiculous theory, from a university student no less, that Catherine Howard was really Anne Boleyn. He said something about Henry didn't have the heart to kill Anne so he exiled her and she took up a new identity. After the peace and tranquility of Jane and Anne of Cleves he decided he wanted spunky Anne back and so married her under the identity of Katherine Howard. His proof? That she looked like Anne Boleyn and that he got rid of her in the same manner as he did with Anne B when he got sick of her. Let's just say our professor wasn't very impressed!

This was discussed recently on the Anne Boleyn files. Somebody was actually arguing that since Henry was ruthless in disposing of his ministers and wives that it was entirely possible that he had commited incest ! I came across another equally silly theory that the potrait of Elizabeth I as a young girl in her room contained visual clues that indicated she had been sexually abused by Henry ! Then of course there is the one where Elizabeth died as a child as was replaced by a look-a-like boy, that she and Leicester had a string of illigetimate children and that she was really a Hermaphrodite. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. The Tudor period seems to have been a golden age of outlandish rumours and far fetched conspiracy theories. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Siiiiigghhh.... She had her head cut off twice. Now that's just careless, isn't it? Anyway, it's a great conspiracy theory. Possibly even better than the "Bisley Boy" Theory, and the Shakespeare doubters but together.:P 2  out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

There aren't any clues. It's just someone with too much time on their hands making stuff up. It'll be something in the brush strokes, or the fact that a clock without a face is situated in the top left hand corner, or some such nonsense.

Another painting that formed the basis of a conspiracy theory (prompting the theorist to write a whole book about it), was the Thomas More family portrait painted by Holbein. Apparently, all the "clues" in the picture prove that Richard of Shrewsbury did not die in the Tower of London alongside his elder brother (Edward V), but was in fact living with More, and was even included in the picture. Shoite, of course.

I came across a site that claimed that Katherine of Aragon, More and Wolsley bribed Anne Boleyn's doctor Chambre to bring about her miscarriages. Despite the fact that they were all dead when she had her last one. Wolsley and More were also claimed to be responsible for coaching Jane Seymour to destroy Anne. Another Tudor who continued to conspire beyond the grave was Cromwell who according to one source was responsible for uncovering Katherine Howard's adultery. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. in the book the Sixth wife by Susannah dunn, she does claim she read an article that suggests Elizabeth and thomas seymour had a child and that Elizabeth hid this in order to remain the virgin queen. LOL but that theory is unfounded and most likely untrue. There was another theory I came across which stated that Mary boleyn was actually Elizabeths mother. I will have to find that one, but it would seem a few people believed that marys two children she had were not henry careys, in fact they were the kings but that could be true but its unlikely. It could be one of those mary boleyn fansites trying to promote mary as the "saintly" sister. Some weird theories around 1  out of 21 found this valuable. Do you?
