Where did the myth of Bloody Mary origin from?

So obviously there was a time when Mary went from being sympathetic and beloved Queen to 'Bloody Mary', can anyone tell me more about when it happened, who were the main instigators of the myth, what was there motive etc?I'm finding it all quite interesting and would love to be able to compare it to the Gloriana myth of Elizabeth. Can any of our more learned friends on here give me some details, perhaps a good book to recommend? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I can't be a hundred percent certain, but I always believed the name 'Bloody Mary' had some connection to the English myth of 'Bloody Mary', a ghost who appeared in mirrors whenever her name was chanted three times. She is also said to be summoned by chanting "Bloody Mary, I killed your baby", something very synonymous with Mary Tudor, whose reign as queen was marred by false pregnancies.

I believe Mary was not given this title until after her death. I have read that it had a lot to do with the number of Protestants that were executed during Mary's reign and the fact that they were burned at the stake. This was the also the favoured execution method of the Spanish Inquisition. English people at the time were said to be terrified of an Inquisition happening in England. Later in Elizabeth's reign England were at war with Spain and that blackened Mary's reputation still further as she had been married to the Spanish King Phillip..

"So obviously there was a time when Mary went from being sympathetic and beloved Queen to 'Bloody Mary', can anyone tell me more about when it happened, who were the main instigators of the myth, what was there motive etc?Probably the main instigator would have to be John Knox [EDIT: Foxe] who wrote "the Book of Martyrs" detailing the stories of all the protestant victims of the Marian persecutions. This book came about at a time when printing had really taken off and would be considered a best seller by todays standards. Knox and Foxe are pretty similar names - especially as they both had the first name of John and they both had quite a lot to say for themselves.

She also has a drink named after her - "Bloody Mary" - which is Tomato Juice and Vodka. For those on a diet, they would just have the Tomato Juice - which would make it a "bloody shame". :)

I read that it was just in the Victorian times that she was named Bloody Mary.
