So glad you can join in Trisha. I thought if I said anytime in the next fourteen days it would give anybody who wants to take part a chance to obtain a copy of the film.

I am excited to watch it again. I haven't seen it in ages and now we can compare the more "traditional" representations of Henry and More with the ones in the Tudors.

"Orson Wells played Cardinal Wolsey"Wonderful film from 1966. I've seen it several times. I believe Paul Scofield won Best Actor for his role. I remember there being a cameo of Vanessa Redgrave as Anne Boleyn (she wasn't in the credits). I have to see it again as I don't remember much more! Do you find this valuable? |

I watched it again last night. I have several things I would like to comment on, but first I would say what marvellous cinematography. The film grips the attention from the opening scenes where the messenger is taking a note to Sir Thomas from Cardinal Wolsey at Hampton Court. and does not let go until the final scene of More's execution. A superb cast I thought -Paul Scofield, absolutely wonderful as More - and yes he did indeed win an Oscar for his role. The film won si x Academy Awards including best picture.. Another point when I first saw this film a long time ago now. I was struck by the title - A Man For All Seaons it immediately intrigued me and became a film that I wanted to see. There were also some deep thought provoking quotes, I will be writing more later - This film certainly paints More in a virtuous light. When I first saw this film I must admit my knowledge of More was sketchy to put it mildly, I have since read a great deal more about him and now know that he was a very complex man, and he had his darker side which is really not portrayed at all in this film. Another point at the end of the film when they are describing what happened to the other key characters they say that Henry VIII died of syphilis - there is absolutely no proof that this was the case. I will have more to write, just wanted to get things started here. Do you find this valuable? |

@royalfalcon; Yes, I totally agree. More was a complex man & did have a darker side. He was portrayed, however, as extremely virtuous.I was reading that the title was taken from Robert Whittington, a contemporay of More who wrote:" More is a man of angel's wit & singular learning. I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness & ability? And as time requireth, a man of marvelous mirth & pastimes and sometime of sad gravity. A man for all seasons." The camera work and the picture is great, but I HATE the way Henry is portrayed. I had a feeling the director made him look like a complete oaf to paint More even more virtuous and superior. I prefer shades of grey instead of this black and white attitude.

LadyLizzy I am inclined to agree with you about Henry. When I watched the film once more a few days ago I realized that Henry was portrayed for the most part .as a raving lunatic. He really only has a small cameo role in this film, but it is a significant one. His main scene is with Sir Thomas More and you are right it certainly makes More look extremely superior and sensible in contrast..

I have watched 10 minutes of the film, and here is what I like about this movie in comparison with The Tudors:1) People pray 2) Women wear headdresses and men look a bit shabby 3) There is no sex 4) No open homosexuality being flaunted I must say I fully expected to dislike this movie, but then I have watched only 10 mins :D Do you find this valuable? |

I will pay more attention this time. John Hurt is in the film as well. Quite a cast! Do you find this valuable? |

"I have watched 10 minutes of the film, and here is what I like about this movie in comparison with The Tudors:LOL henry's7thwife!!! In 1966 "sex" was mostly left to the imagination of the viewer. Homosexuality (I believe) was still considered a "deviation" & i do believe prayer had to "fill in the blanks". Good observations. As far as the shabby dress, maybe the film was being made on a tight budget! Do you find this valuable? |

Lettice I agree that Robert Shaw was a fine actor who did indeed pass away too young. I can see what Lady Lizzy meant though that the portrayal of the King did make him seem quite an oaf. However, this I am sure was more to do with the director than the actor. . John Hurt played Richard Rich The cast certainly included some brilliant talent.
