R.I.P. Robert Dudley who died on 4th September 1588
Sep 4 2011, 5:53 AM EDT
It saddened the Queen's celebrations after the victory against the Spanish Armada to hear that her favourite had died. He had been on his way to Buxton in Derbyshire to take the baths. He had been unwell, but his death was unexpected. He had been the great favourite of the Queen since the very start of her reign. Indeed, when she had fallen gravely ill with smallpox it was Robert she had requested to be made Protector of the Realm. He was a man of many interests - he was a patron of the arts (100 books were dedicated to him) He was also a pioneer of new industries and he concerned himself with relieving unemployment amongst the poor.. He also organized many features of the Queens Coronation. I have a connection with Robert because I often work at Kew Palace which is situated within the world famous Botanical. Gardens. The Palace is built on Tudor foundations and it is thought tht it might well have been Robert Dudley's home, although we certainly cannot be sure. However, we know he did have one of his homes at Kew and Elizabeth used to visit him there. It is certainly a nice thought that I might be working where Robert once used to live.. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

"RIP RobertYou can see Dudley & read the letter here on Elizabeth's historical profile : http://www.thetudorswiki.com/page/Queen+Elizabeth+I+-+Historical+profile He was a handsome fellow in his youth, wasn't he? I always thought the actor Joseph Fiennes epitomized what I thought he would look like. Do you find this valuable? |

"You can see Dudley & read the letter here on Elizabeth's historical profile :Yeah I agree, Joseph Fiennes was great as Robert in the "Elizabeth" film. I think it's so sad and unfair that those two never became proper couple because they were obviously very much in love. I recently visited Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire which was Robert's home. He often entertained Elizabeth there and created a beautiful garden there just for her. In one particular visit in around 1575 he was hoping to propose to her there - it was his last chance to - but it never happened! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Oh LadyTudorsFan I am so envious. I want to get to Kenilworth Castle. I understand that the garden has been recreated to look how it did in the year of that famous progress of 1575.. It is thought that William Shakespeare might have visited there as a young boy and that some of his ideas for Midsummers Night Dream were taken from that spectacular progress. I hope to go to Warwick in a few weeks to see where Robert and some members of his family are buried. Kenilworth is also on my list, but will have to be for another time.

It's now mainly big ruins, but the only bit left still intact is Leicester's Gatehouse which is now used for weddings (quite apt I think). The gardens are a recreation of the garden Robert had designed for Elizabeth's visit. He also put on a play for her, there was dancing and partying and she still wouldn't marry him lol! :) The castle was the inspiration for Walter Scott's novel "Kenilworth" where Amy Robsmart appears (even though she died in real life 10 years previous to the setting of the novel). I also visited Shakespeare's birthplace and the excavation site of "New Place", the house that he lived in for the last 19 years of his life. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
