New Game - Significant Events in Every Year of Henry's Reign!

This is a game where a certain amount of research will be needed., unless it is a year that you can think of something significant happening without the need to look it up.This is how it will work: Starting with 1509 and finishing in 1547 we will add an event that took place each year. This will be preferably Tudor but world wide events will be acceptable where we cannot find anything Tudor. We will work on one year per day and try and make sure that we cover all the years upto and including 1547. We can add more than one event per year, so if you find that somebody has already entered under a particular year, it is fine to add something else that you have found of significance for that year. The more the merrier. I will start the ball rolling. 1509 ==== On the 24th June 1509 (Midsummers Day) King Henry was crowned King of England. at Westminster Abbey. As soon as the King disappeared into the Abbey the crowds ripped the carpets to pieces to take home as souvenirs. Sir Thomas More is quoted as saying in verses he wrote to celebrate the Coronation "Henry, was a new messiah and his reign a second coming". 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

1509==== On June 29th, 1509 Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII died. She had held considerable influence over her son and had pushed a marriage alliance between England and Spain in order to join the House of Tudor with the bloodlines of the most powerful nation in Europe. EDIT: HeverRose, we must have been writing our posts at the same time lol 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

1510==== On the 17th August 1510 Edmund Dudley and Richard Empson were executed at the Tower of London. It was said to be for treason, but it was thought by many that they were scapegoats for Henry VII's more unpopular tax policies which Henry VIII wished to disassociate himself from.. Edmund Dudley was the father of John Dudley and the grandfather of Robert. He was also a one time speaker at the House of Commons. Do you find this valuable? |

1510==== On the 31st January Queen Katherine of Aragon delivers a stillborn daughter. Although she had lost her baby, Katherine’s abdomen stayed rounded and actually began to increase in size, leading her physician to conclude that “the Queen remained pregnant of another child and it was believed”. In February Henry ordered the refurbishment of the royal nursery and Elizabeth Denton, the former Lady Mistress of Henry’s own nursery, was brought out of retirement in anticipation of the birth. By March Katherine entered her confinement and waited for her labour to begin. It never did. In late May, Fray Diego reported that the swelling had decreased and that she was not pregnant after all.It seems to have been a phantom pregnancy or an infection. When she emerges from her birthing chambers, without a child, she & Henry violently quarrel. Katherine finally wrote to her father telling him that she had just miscarried, a blatant lie but understandable in the circumstances. Rumours then began to circulate that she was barren. Also, this year Katherine found out that Henry has taken an interest in Anne Stafford, Duke of Buckingham's sister & she is sent from court. Henry is angry that she has spied on him & sends Lady Elizabeth Fitzwalter (who was in her retinue & told her brother about the dalliance) from court in retaliation. Do you find this valuable? |

I found something for 1511: Catherine gave birth to a son on January 1 1511 but he died on February 22. What a difference he would have made to history had he lived!

LOL acording to the record here it says that you both posted yesterday - we were still on 1510. then. Please don't leap ahead, - we only work on one year per day. If we cannot find anything Tudor for a day we can put a world event for that year. Sorry I don't mean to moan but I think it will get confusing if we take the dates out of sequence.. .

1511____ The Mary Rose was launched July 1511. She was towed to London and fitted with rigging and decking, and supplied with armaments. Other than the structural details needed to sail, stock and arm, she was also equipped with flags, banners and streamers (extremely elongated flags that were flown from the top of the masts) that were either painted or gilded. Also perhaps instead of skipping to the next year if you can't find anything, its probably better not to post but wait till the next day? Do you find this valuable? |

It would indeed be better I think to wait until the next day if nothing can be found and then post. in order to keep the date sequence correct.. Do you find this valuable? |
