I think it may have been an excerpt from a piece composed by Thomas Tallis, called "Spem in Alium". Here is a link to a Youtube video of it. It is available to download from various sites, and available dirt cheap on all sorts of Classical compilations.

If I have this wrong, I am very sorry, lol! But, I am not sure what you're talking about. The only "Psalm" moment I can remember was from Anne Boleyn's night in the Tower, before her execution. I don't recall any other moment when a Psalm was read out. Do you find this valuable?

I know that I'm a little late to the party, but I just started watching the series. If you are talking about the music in the scene in cathedral at the very beginning of the episode (choir in white robes carrying candles, walking in the shape of the cross), they are singing Josquin Des Prez's Ave Maria. You can hear it on Youtube here:

It took me forever to think of what this was. Since I was thinking it should be Thomas Tallis, that led me on a mad chase through my seemingly endless collection of English Renaissance choral music. Then I branched out to the continent. Mystery solved.

I'm so happy that this was truly helpful to someone! When I watched the episode, I thought, "I know this piece. What is it?" I wandered around the Internet looking for the answer, but I gave up. I went through all the Thomas Tallis stuff in my iTunes library, but it wasn't there, either. However, I have a collection that my son gave me (he sings) with both Tallis and Josquin pieces, and there it was!!!! I called my son last night and told him the story. He reminded me that he had sung this piece as a senior in high school when he sang in the MENC all-eastern choir (a choir of high school students from the 11 northeastern states) way back in 2007 (actually the concert was EXACTLY six years ago today - how weird). Anyway, The Tallis Scholars (who are basically the definition of singing perfection) have a Christmas double CD with a wonderful recording of this (I just listened to it). You can buy the mp3 for 99 cents from Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Tallis-Scholars-Traditional/dp/B0000E3HIT/ref=sr_1_8?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1363041320&sr=1-8&keywords=josquin+desprez+ave+maria

I would recommend getting the whole CD, but the second CD is mostly just plainchant, and not everyone likes that so much.

I'm glad that the mystery is solved for both of us!

Thank you once again... I thought for sure it was not Tallis but I did thought it was Henry VIII himself who wrote it...because he really according to my sources was really good in composing music as well and psalms to honour /Praise God Do you find this valuable?
