"I remember the graphic, I was one of the ones who complained! I hated that objectifying picture.oh god no Dana, please don't make me do that. LOL I don't know if you read Gareth Russell's blog but he did a brilliant review of the movie "the Other Boleyn Girl"...and as Owen (Bullen1) said at the end of it...'watching this film was one of the most painful experiences of my whole life". My kids bought me the book and the movie...cos they thought I would love it. I spent my time throwing the book around and shouting at the TV. I know thats melodramatic but I really had a bad reaction to it LOL. http://garethrussellcidevant.blogspot.com/2010/03/other-boleyn-girl-2008.html 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Sad but true. The only Gregory book that I found interesting was The Boleyn Inheritance, which is about Anne of Cleves, Jane Rochford and Catherine Howard. The three characters tell their own story in interweaving chapters, and each has a distinct voice and character. From a literary point of view it is very inspired and i liked it quite a bit. All her other books I found rather boring and i stopped reading them after about a third of the way through.

"I realize that I have left it open. On reflection I think it would be better to keep to one category. As HeverRose has suggested a couple of books already and they are fiction. I think we should make it fiction this time. We can always read a factual book another time. You know, we could do both. For instance, pick the one that gets the most votes. After all, both are fun to read. Do you find this valuable? |

"You know, we could do both. For instance, pick the one that gets the most votes. After all, both are fun to read."If people do not mind. I can be flexible and if they want to put a factual book on the list that is fine by me. After all we can only read one at a time. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I received my copy of The Arrow Chest the other day and started reading. It is actually really delicious and I am loving it, but I think that most people here would probably prefer to read something more directly Tudor related. It is the story of an artist, his muse and the powerful man she marries. They live in Kent, just down the road from Hever Castle. It is developing in such a manner that it is becoming obvious that the muse is Anne Boleyn, the husband Henry and the artist Wyatt. Exactly how this link will be established I don't yet know, but it is keeping me hooked, that is for sure. It is quite nicely done with a real eerie feeling about it and for Tudor lovers it is fascinating to see the "personalities" take shape in characters of a later age. It is very atmospheric and quite an enjoyable read. Do you find this valuable? |

I recently bought "Reign Of Henry VIII - David Starkey", It is a very short book, and I have not yet started it. Looking forward to reading it.

"I received my copy of The Arrow Chest the other day and started reading.Hi HeverRose I know The Arrow Chest was one of your choices for the book read. Do you want to keep in for the vote or would you like to change it for another book choice?. Whatever, you decide is fine, but I noticed that you stated that you felt that people here would probably prefer to read something more Tudor related. Do you find this valuable? |

Carol, if I were offering a course in "The Tudors in Literature " I would include it, but after reading a few others first. It offers a nice comparison on how you can rework a subject in a different and original way. So my inclination would be the same here. Let's start with something more directly set in the period and then, if we want to continue, we can look at it down the line.

It goes without saying that I would second "Wolf Hall" by Hilary Mantel. It has so much going on, and on so many different levels, that each character has more layers than Canary Wharf. Also, I found some very probing discussion points for Wolf Hall, and have them saved somewhere!

I would also like to vote for Wolf Hall. I have a copy in my ever growing 'to read' pile but haven't got around to reading it yet, so this would be a good opportunity.

"I've heard Wolf Hall is rather long and difficult to get through. If that is true, I wonder if it would be better to read during the winter when more of us are inside and ready to read a long detailed book. In reading groups I've seen in the past, summer reading picks are usually a bit lighter and shorter as people are vacationing and out and about more - and reading less. I think most of us are northern hemisphere and it's summer now. Or, if we pick something like Wolf Hall, perhaps we could just give it a longer time to get through it, rather than the traditional 1 month to read. Thoughts? Do you find this valuable? |

"oh god no Dana, please don't make me do that. LOL "Now I think I must! I haven't seen your head spin around in some time! I'm going to have to create a bunch of new wiki accounts and vote for "The Other Boleyn Girl" 30 times and force you to read it! <evil laugh> Do you find this valuable? |

Thats a good point. It is a pretty hefty book. I have never gotten around to reading it as I am studying for a history degree at the moment, so I have to give precedence to academic texts.

My opinion of Wolf Hall is that it is one of the worst books I have read in recent times. First thing, one can barely make out who is speaking and at whom it is targetted. For god's sake, if you can't use your pronouns properly, use names, lady! Also, I seriously think that her characterisation were mere caricatures of the people. And I can go on and on. Or should I wait until we actually review the book? ;)

"LOL I take it that is a no from you Kav for Wolf Hall?"In most strong terms, lol. I don't intend wasting one more second of my life reading Hillary Crap Mantel. But of course, I could opt out for that particular session if many others want to read it. Do you find this valuable? |
