Another new book on Anne Boleyn

Yes ...yet another. This one is about her early life, called "ANNE BOLEYN: The Young Queen To Be" by Josephine Wilkinson. ...to be released but I have not been able to find out the date.

Here is the publisher's description :
Although Anne Boleyn is perhaps the most engaging of Henry VIII's Queens, but biographies usually concentrate on the period after she became a lady in waiting at Henry VIII's court. This is the only book to tell the forgotten side of Anne early life and loves, written by the author of the best-selling Mary Boleyn: Henry VIII's Favourite Mistress. For her he would divorce his wife of some twenty years standing, he would take on the might of the Roman Church and the Holy Roman Empire; he would even alienate his own people in order to win her favor and, eventually, her hand.

But before Henry came into her life Anne Boleyn had already wandered down love's winding path. She had learned its twists and turns during her youth spent at the courts of the Low Countries and France, where she had been sent as a result of her scandalous behavior with her father's butler and chaplain. Here her education had been directed by two of the strongest women of the age - and one of the weakest.

*I have to say I don't hold out much hope for this book after her other books and this unsubstantiated scandal

The only plus about this book might be more information about one of the most interesting and powerful of female Renaissance rulers, Margaret of Austria.

It would be good if someone would write a biography of her rather than yet another book about Anne. I have Jane de Iongh's account of her life, but that was originally written in Dutch in 1942 and translated into English in 1954, so it is rather out of date.

Thank you MsSquirrly . I have never heard of this author. Her credentials seem good though, after all, she is AN Historian, so we will just have to see. I say let's give her a chance.

Is there anything out there about Margaret of Navarre? She always seemed a deeply interesting woman. Do you find this valuable?

yes she is AN historian LOL and she has written several books. There's an interesting email exchange between her and Alison Weir on Weir's website :

So it WAS true about the Butler then?! Naughty girl!! Anyway, I didn't know they called them Butlers in those days. I thought they called them something else, or split up their role over several tasks so that you had one to look after the master's drink, one to look after his clothes, one to announce when dinner was ready, one to make the bed, one to ahem assist in the lavatory, etc, well you know what I mean! :)

Claire Ridgway for the Anne Boleyn files just sent the following message :

Warning: If you've read Josephine Wilkinson's "The Early Loves of Anne Boleyn," DO NOT pre-order the "new" book called "Anne Boleyn: The Young Queen to Be." This book is the SAME book, re-issued and re-titled in the wake of the success of "The Tudors" in order to milk some money from unsuspecting readers. Amberley publishers should be ashamed of themselves, as there is nothing in their PR to make this clear.

I was reading that exchange of e mails, there. In amongst the mutual back slapping, there were some good points there. especially with regards to the Richard III society. They tend to be rather domineering, and tell people what to the think with regards to the Princes, etc.

As for Josephine, I don't trust the judgement of anyone who believes in ghosts.

The ghost of Anne Boleyn is a bit of a celebrity - she holds the record for the most sightings of any ghost. She has been spotted 30,000 times in 120 locations, including Hever Castle, Blickling Estate and the Tower of London.
