What was your favourite season of the Tudors?
May 22 2011, 10:35 AM EDT
Seasons 1, 2, 3 or 4? Which of these was the best Season of the Tudors? For me, I'd say Season 2 because it was the most dramatic and ended with the most dramatic episode of the whole series, Anne Boleyn's fall and execution. Do you find this valuable?

I have to agree with you LadyTudorFan. I would put season 2 in first place as well. That last episode was just amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed all the seasons but that one was my favourite.

I think almost everyone agrees that Season 2 was the best as it had the most dramatic storyline - the rise and fall of Ann Boleyn - and the most fascinating character. I've always thought one of the most difficult things about dramatising Henry's life is that the most interesting part of the story - his obsession with and subsequent hatred of Ann Boleyn - happens relatively early on. It all seems a bit anti-climactic from then on.I think Seasons 1 and 4 are a toss-up for second place, but 3 is definitely the least good. There were no really compelling characters or story lines. It seemed almost like a 'filler' season, and wasn't helped by the way in which they made Jame Seymour into such a boring non-entity. I also think they could have made more of Cromwell's storyline, and told it more from his point of view rather than just show others scheming against him and Henry dropping hints. I pretty much agree with everyone here. Season Two was the best. There was no outdoing Natalie and her interpretaion of Anne. As this was certainly the most interesting and compelling part of Henry's life, the rest was somewhat anticimatic. I also liked Season One mainly for Wolsey's performance, who I enjoyed watching as the tension slowly caught up with him. What a fine performance he gave. And the First Season set the whole drama in motion. Beginnings are usually more interesting than endings. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Agreed HeverRose, Sam Neill was brilliant as Wolsey.

Yeah Sam Neill did really well as Wolsey. Season 1 was like setting the scene. Season 3 I would say was my second favourite - as James Frain had put it, season 3 is for Cromwell what season 2 was for Anne Boleyn, but without the bedroom antics! :)

But despite the fact that Cromwell was my absolute favourite in the whole series, I found Season Three very uncomfortable. I could not bring myself to watch the last two episodes. I am weird like that. I much prefer seeing someone in their rise to power than when they are hanging on to it and on their way down. Do you find this valuable? |

"Yes, too bad about the lack of bedroom antics there!!!LOL yeah I agree they should have spiced it up! :) Yeah I know what you mean about the last episodes - it was just so sad and horrible - I think in some ways worse than the end of season 2! It also pretty much started from the start of season 3 because Henry starts to become more and more violent to Cromwell when things went wrong. Do you find this valuable? |

For me the best season was three. I'm in two minds about James Frain playing Cromwell. On one hand he's a good actor and played the part well. But on the other hand his appearence, mannerisms and a lot of the way the script potrayed him for me was just not Cromwell. I suppose everyone has their own idea of how historic characters they are particularly intrested in should be shown.

With the character of Henry the writers looked ( and got) star quality and major sex appeal. With Cromwell, i think they were trying to humanize a person who has gone down in history as a villain.Of course it all worked for us, otherwise we wouldn't be on this fan site LOL. I loved Frain's portrayal of Cromwell, ( and especially the styling of him) but he didn't make me afraid of him, which I think the real Cromwell would have been able to do. I think Cromwell made lots of people afraid!! Do you find this valuable? |

Yeah I think the real Cromwell was a lot fatter and scarier! :) He was pretty scary though when he interrogated Madge Shelton though in Season 2! However, I think Frain's portrayal is definitely the best portrayal I've seen of Cromwell compared to other historical dramas and films.

And yes, he can interrogate me anytime LOL!!! But seriously, he did not really exude the fearsome energy that i imagine the real Cromwell had. I would have to go back and look at how Cromwell has been portrayed before. What I imagine is a person you JUST DO NOT WANT TO CROSS. It is a certain aura that some people have. He did have a sense of humor but I think he just didn't take any crap. Being summoned to see Cromwell would have been like being sent for by the headmaster. i don't think it was any fun. I loved James Frain as Cromwell; I am very happy with how this show went out of their way to humanize Thomas Cromwell and Princess Mary and break from the stereotype of them being these one dimensional villainous people. On the show Thomas wasn't scary he was just a brilliant mind who was a force to be reckoned with. My favorite seasons: 2 1 3(because I did like Jane) 4 (I felt they dropped the ball on both the 5th and 6th wife) Do you find this valuable? |

Despite the presence of knotted ropes, I did think James Frain was a brilliant Cromwell; and season two was the best of the lot. Actually, it was the best by a country mile.
