The imposing medieval Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, (St. Peter in Chains) within the Tower, was consecrated in the reign of William the Conqueror's youngest son Henry I, but was rebuilt in the thirteenth century and again during the Tudor period. Both Henry I and his brother, William Rufus, continued work on improvements and additions to their father's formidable stronghold.Throughout its long and bloodstained history, the Tower has played host to a number of famous prisoners.

I know the Tower really well. As a Volunteer for Historic Royal Palaces I often work there. I attended the Carol Service at St Peters ad Vincula in December. Over the last couple of years they have had conservation work going on round The White Tower and we have taken parties up to the top in Open House London Weekend.

Royalfalcon, do you know exactly where Anne Boleyn was housed while in the tower? Is it available to tour privately and what does one have to do to see it?

Hi HeverRose, Anne Boleyn was housed in The Lieutenants Lodge. Unfortunately it is no longer there. There have been a few diffrerent ideas as to where it actually was located. Alison Weir, thinks it was very likely situated between The Lanthorn Tower and the Wardrobe Tower on the South Lawn behind the White Tower. A lot of people think that Anne was housed in The Queens House but this was not built until a few years after her death. I will see if one of the Yeoman Warders can pinpoint it for me next time I am there and then I will report back with my findings..
