Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour's Master of the Horse

hi there everyone!

i am researching my family background, which involves the king's court for centuries starting with William the Conqueror in 1066. more specifically, i am hunting down information on Sir William Coffyn, who was the Master of the Horse at Anne Boleyn's coronation, and continued as such after Anne's beheading to serve Jane Seymour accordingly.

i've added a bit more info about him in my profile.

while i realize would have made little sense to include such a peripheral character in the script of The Tudors Series, it is still quite interesting to watch the series after often imagining what life was like for my ancestor in this setting.

the reason i am posting here is hoping some other members might have some information, or ability to point me in a good direction, that references Sir William Coffyn - whether anecdotal or not.

one curious bit of information i have regarding the royal courts and my ancestors, for almost 200 years every knight appointed to serve the king was named Richard Coffyn. so much for individuality huh?

i would be most appreciative for any info you might have. perhaps i have some info you could use, as i've done quite a bit of research.

Welcome SirWmCoffin, I thought I recognised the name Coffin in connection with Anne Boleyn and remembered that I had read that Sir William's wife Margaret was at the Tower when Anne was held prisoner there and that she was there in order to spy on Anne. Do you find this valuable?

yes, i believe the historical reference goes something like this:

Wher I was commaunded to charge the gentelwemen that gyf thayre atende apon the Quene, that ys to say, thay shuld have now commynycaseon with hyr in lese (unless") my wyf ware present, and so I dyd hit, notwithstaundyng it canot be: for my lady Bolen and meystrys Cofyn lyes on the Quenes palet, and I and my wyf at the dore with yowt so that they most nedes talke yat be without; but I have every thyng told me by mestrys Cofyn that she thynks met for me to knowe—From the Toure this mo...:.."

In a subsequent correspondence with the Secretary, Kingston says,—" the Quene hathe meche desyred to have here in the closet the sacarments, & also hyr Amner (almoner) who she supposeth to be Devet; for won owre she ys determyned to dy, and the next owre meche contrary to that. Yesterday after your departyng I sent for my wyf, & also for mestrys Coffyn to know how she had done that day, they sayd she had bene very mery and made agret dyner, and yet sone after she called for hyr supper, havyng marvell wher I was all day."

Unfortunately I don't know anything about Coffin.
Only thing I can add, is two worthwhile sources on historical facts. I'm searching for information about Thomas Culpeper and apart from all sites you can find on internet I think googlebooks is a very good source and this one: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/.
Could be that this is old news for you, but you never know.

Hello, Ironically I too am researching our Coffin Family Tree. I was kind of hopping to see Sir William Coffin mentioned as he did away with the Mortuary payments. I had read that the Coffins had married the Boleyn's at some time too. I would love to share info and sources. Do you find this valuable?
