Titles given to Heirs and a Question about Henry's titles.

I have recently been confused by a couple of things.
My first question is when Henry became the Prince of Wales did he still hold the title of the Duke of York or was it taken of him because he became Prince of Wales?.
My second question is if Henry and Anne Boleyn had sons what one would of got the title of Pembroke? would of it been passed down like Richmond was passed to Henry Fitzroy?.
My third question is what is the origins of the titles of the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York? I am slowly going backwards in my history but haven't seem to have got to the origins yet.

From what I have read, the title of Duke of York became merged with the crown with Henry. I am not an expert but I am pretty sure the title of of Pembroke would have been passed on to a second male child.

To answer your third question first, as this makes the other answers make more sense (hopefully):

The title of Prince of Wales was first given to the future Edward II as a baby. Edward I had defeated the native Welsh princes and promised them a new prince, so he showed them his small son and said he would make him Prince of Wales. Young Edward had been born at Caernarfon Castle in 1284, but he was not formerly invested with the the title until 1301.

The title of Duke of York for the King's second son was first used in 1474 by Henry's grandfather Edward IV for his son Richard, born in 1473 (the younger of the 'Princes in the Tower'). Since then, all Dukes have either become king or had no sons, so the title has not been passed on (which is why there is currently a Duke of York, Prince Andrew, who is the Queen's second son).

Going back to question 1, I think that had Henry VII's third son Prince Edmund lived, he would have become Duke of York when young Henry became Prince of Wales. As Edmund predeceased Arthur, the title was not held by anyone.

The Pembroke title was inherited by Henry VII after the death of his uncle Jasper Tudor without heirs, so it wasn't a traditional 'royal' title. If Henry VIII had been lucky enough to have three sons, maybe the third one would have got it.

1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
