Madge Shelton
Mar 10 2010, 5:34 PM EST
I have read two conflicting opinions of whenther Marge Shelton was actually Henry`s mistress or not. In The Six wives of Henry VIII by alison Weir "Anne persuaded Madge Shelton; her cousin toencourage Henry`s advances. In no time at all Madge was in the King`s bed." However in the bookRoyal Paramours by Dulcie M. Ashdown, it reads " Early in 1535 Anne produced a cousin of her own, Madge Shelton, whom she hoped would attract Henry, but would be so grateful to Anne for her advancement that she would do no harm, while at the same time keeping the King from more dangerous women. But Henry saw theough the ploy and sent Madge away. Sow was she his mistress or not? Also I`ve read that the person we think is Madge or Margaret was actually her sister Mary. there is some confusion as to the spelling in the 16th century. does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thank you for your input.

Also you are right that there was some confusion with the names because a "y" looks like a "g" in old english writing. Historians now say that Margaret was not the sister who had the affair. http://tudorswiki.sho.com/page/MISTRESSES+of+the+King 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I was always under the impression that it was Madge's sister, Mary, who had the affair with the King.

@periwinkle...also if you are asking if it was definite that there was an affair between Mary Shelton and Henry, there is no substantiated evidence since Henry only acknowledged two mistresses, Bessie Blount and Mary Boleyn. Every other mistress can only be called rumour and Alison Weir is just speculating that Anne encouraged it.

"where di you read that mary sheldon was the mistress of milord surrey , henri howard ? tell me more ...:-)"Yes I would like to know too. I have been reading Jessie Child's book on Henry Howard called "Henry VIII's last victim". It says that Mary Shelton was a "close friend" of Surrey's but that his squire Thomas Clere had been in love with her which was why he had written an elegy to him : "Norfolk sprang thee, Lambeth holds thee dead, Clere of the County Cleremont though hight; Within the womb of Osmonde's race thou bred, Shelton for love, Surrey for lord thou chase..." According to the book she formed the 3rd member of the 'tender league' along with his squire Clere and she was known to have many secrets but nothing I have read says she was ever his mistress. 2 out of 3 found this valuable.
