"There is another great quote in history, and tragically I don't have it to hand and can't even remember who said it. But went something a long the lines of "that goggle-eyed *****", and was used to describe Anne Boleyn."
I believe it is a quote from Wolsey describing anne and Percy:.........."That goggle eyed girl and a half grown steer"

No, Wolsey called Anne "the midnight crow". The quote I refer to is from during Anne's actual reign (which began three years after Wolsey's fall. The words were spoken quite openly, by one of KoA's staunch supporters.

"Several points:

a. I admit More's "feather bed" statement sounds strange to modern ears, but obviously Roper put it in because he thought contemporary readers would understand it and find it commendable.

b. When there was such poor medical care, it made sense to look to religion for some hope and comfort.

c. A sick or troubled person might think God has turned from him or is punishing him (not that I think that), but if he thinks about Christ's sufferings, maybe his own sufferings while not understandable might seem more bearable.

d. It is a groping for meaning in suffering. Otherwise should he say your suffering is pointless or maybe quote Job's wife: "Curse God and die!"

Just a few Lenten thoughts of mine..... :)

"
Whatever way you want to take it, is fair enough. However, you're trotting out that old chestnut about "judging More through modern standards" line. That line that all More sympathisers use to sweep the more disagreeable aspects of his personality under the carpet. The man was a fanatic, at the end of the day, and almost everything he said and did just highlight his shortcomings as a statesman and politician.

Reggie said: LMFAO... i can't even understand what the heck that quote meant, but i had a funny feeling it was no different from saying "Suck it up" =P

You replied: That basically is what More is saying there. In not so many words.

The main point I wanted to make in my last post was that More's thought was more subtle than just "suck it up."

"And now to bed" as Samuel Pepys would have written....

If that is the post that you were responding to, then why did you not quote it? You quoted a completely different post and I was responding to that. I always get the feeling, when speaking with you, that you are trying to score points. Now that maybe just me, but we're not in the playground here, so play your games with someone else, please.

Doesn't that huge chip you are carrying on your shoulder tire you out?

Honestly, I don't know why you're so waspish and rude. Don't you get tired of the moderators telling you to play nice? Hasn't it happened 2-3 times already?

We obviously just don't see things the same. Wouldn't it be a boring world if everybody did!

I'd be the first to admit that my humour is deeply laconic, and often comes across quite badly. However, I personally have never been told to "play nice" as it were, the only serious arguments I've had on here have been exacerbated by several people. But thats not the point here. Maybe we did just get our wires crossed, or you quoted the wrong post by mistake etc etc, but sometimes it does feel like a point scoring contest and it seemed you were deliberately confusing the issue.

It might be better if we do not get down to personal attacks! Everyone tries to be nice and Ellie did not come across as rude. She just sounded confused.

Another favourite of mine:
I would not be a queen for all the world. - Henry VIII (or rather Shakespeare)

The guy knew what he was talking about, lol.

A person doesn't have to agree with a quote 100 percent to post it. A person can like it because of the phrasing or the way it is illustrative of a Tudor player's character/outlook.

Hey Elliemental, I am dying to know if it was indeed Margaret Chancellor (?sp) who said that Goggle-eyed wh*re and then "God Save Queen Katherine" in front of several courtiers. I don't have my copy of Ives' "The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn" but apparently he quotes Margaret saying this - on page 200. The footnote numbered 53 will tell us his source. I can't wait until 5pm to get home to check my copy - does anyone have it handy to check for me? Pretty please~?

Ah yes, I've found it: "Margaret Chanseler, from Bradfield St Clare in Suffolk, demonstrated a particularly personal line in invective when she said that Anne was a "goggle-eyed wh0re...God save Queen Katherine".

"Masters all, I am come hither not to preach a sermon but to die, as the law hath found me, and to the law I submit me".
