":D Exactly. That is exactly why Cromwell was so "eager" for the pilgrims to be put down. Although many people consider him the 'yes man', it should be known that he always had the Crown's best interests at heart. The Pilgrimage was a threat to the Crown. I agree Hannah that one of the reasons why the pilgrims (or in fact anyone) wanted Cromwell and Cranmer brought down/ replaced was because they were low-born. It is so rediculous, but yet in those times, your position in life/ who you were related to and whatnot, was hugely important... But Still! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

That is true in those times status was well....EVERYTHING!!! But still I don't see the merit in killing someone just because the were born low and have been raised higher that in the deserving of being killed is determined by two things, reasons, or whatever. (1) How did get to the top by honorable or more dishonorable means? (2) What have you done since being there that make people dislike or like you given that no two people think alike? Think about and the fact that Cromwell lied to Henry as far as Cramner goes he just seem to go along with the flow of the reformation. At least that is how I am reading I could wrong and I don't mind if I am and if I am corrected I count it as knowledge gained by, a good and honest mean. Do you find this valuable? |

I find this interesting, really, because while it's almost certain that the incriminating letter found at his house was planted to frame him, there is also some evidence that he was indeed aiding religious radicals in their escape from the country, and was helping to support 'heretics' in Calais. I may be mixing my writers up, but I'm pretty sure Schofield addresses this. I don't think Cromwell was ever doing it with a mind to incite rebellion, but this does, in some ways, imply that he *was* actually guilty of heresy, as it was defined under Henry's strange Catholic-without-the-Pope midway. If it's true that Cromwell was supporting 'heretics', it's one of the things I really admire in him. Do you find this valuable? |

Yeah I was but what i am basing my opinion on is what little info i have read from this site and what i can take from the show, compare and find out what might make some sense and try to get the real story so that when i put two and two together i am getting four.

"As for Thomas More having value for human life, that's a laugh! He put people to death, just like any other who had the power in those days. He had no consideration for his family either, which is why he did not sign that "piece of paper", and he proved himself disloyal to his friend as well by not signing it.You asked a specific question, what was Charles supposed to do in the situation. ANd i compared him to Thomas More who chose death rather than go against his conscience. That is where the comparison comes in. I am not saying THomas MOre was a saint when he clearly was a bigot. And comparing the real Thomas more to the real Charles Brandon wouldnt work seeing as how it was the Duke of Norfolk that put down the rebellion not Brandon. Charles chose to kill all those people, now he has to live with the consequences. I can only hope his disgusting behavior comes back and bites him in the a** Do you find this valuable? |

In any case, it is about Tudor times, and going by that one has to survive in the time. IMO, Charles did what he had to do to survive. One has to be sadly masochistic to choose death over survival, and Suffolk was not masochistic. Also, my question was not about Thomas More, but how one would put down a rebellion. He wrote the most famous English prayer book, ran the risk of bringing his illegal wife into the country and also, he willingly died an extremely painful death all for the sake of his faith. He was very active in bringing Reforms about, and it simply wouldn't have happenned without him, (or indeed Cromwell, despite him only being a layman). Do you find this valuable? |

"Didn't Cranmer briefly recant his beliefs? I could have sworn he did?"And then he recanted the recantation. And when they lit the pyre, he thrust the hand that signed the recantation into the flames first, saying that that hand had sinned grievously, and deserved to be punished first. "Didn't Cranmer briefly recant his beliefs? I could have sworn he did?"He did, but only under extreme duress. Shortly before he was executed, he recanted of his recantation (if that makes sense!) very publically, and was literally dragged off to the stake. Do you find this valuable? |

I have to agree with you on the bigotry that was thomas more. and really why make one man look a saint when he wasn't because personally the Duke of Norfolk put down a rebellion good point, bad point had a hand in pushing his family into a position of power that it was well not suited for. Brandon, love the guy but you make the choice you got to live with the chance of it biting you in the a** whether it will or not is up to fate and God!!! For the record though I think it is kind of biting him already I mean it looks like his marriage is going south really fast because he letting one mistake lead him towards others that is ambition dictates his actions and his devout loyalty Henry which he will do ANYTHING to maintain!!!

"Are you talking about the show or reality??Well seeing as how Charles Brandon had nothing to do with putting down the rebellion in history, Im pretty sure I am referring to the show! And that may be your moral view point, but I would like to believe that if I had the choice of my life of a thousand innocenet peoples lives that I would choose them over me. I sure as he** wouldnt kill them just to save my skin. Clearly Catherine Brandon feels the same way which is why she doesnt love her husband anymore. Do you find this valuable? |

What I meant by bringing him up is that he refused to go against his conscience in signing a piece of paper and CHarles Brandon chose to go against his conscience in killiong a thousand+ people. But when the time of crunch comes, most people choose themselves over others. It is human nature - "survival of the fittest", "natural selection" and so on. So I am assuming that Brandon was not a great person or a martyr, but a normal, average fellow who had got into a situation and dealt with it the best he could. Even assuming that a martyr or a great man would have acted differently, I see no reason to berate Charles for the regular guy that he was. He was a normal human being. He chose his life over death and I see nothing wrong in that. That is what most of us would do. And frankly, I think Catherine in the show is suffering from hormones. She is not being reasonable. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Have we missed something which is rather central to this character? He is a soldier. Soldiers do a job which is not pleasant. Their King/Queen/President/Prime minister calls them to do something for the security of their country ....they do it. They cannot refuse. If soldiers decided to pick and choose which conflicts they want to get involved in, it would really defeat their purpose. Besides to most of them, their loyalty to their country (and the Leader of that Country) is foremost .
