How did your interest in The Tudors start?
Dec 1 2009, 9:40 PM EST
I first got interested in history when I read Gone With The Wind about 6 years ago. After that I went on a civil war study and read all I could about the times. I wasn't so interested in the war itself, but in the people and how they lived. then I read "Cane River", and got interested in slavery and read a lot on that subject. Several years ago I read Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl". I admit that at the time, I knew nothing. I didn't even remember she died at the end! What can I say....I was a product of US public schools. lol After that, I started to read both fiction and non-fiction books on the Tudor family and it became a real obsession. I was thrilled when The Tudors came out, though as I didn't have Showtime at the time, I wasn't even aware of the series until they started advertising Season 2. I Netlixed the first season and quickly caught up. I'm pretty well versed in Tudor history at this point, I've read probably more than 30 books on the Tudors and other European monarchs. My obsession continues! What about you? 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

Well I remember when I was eleven I picked up a book on The Tudor Dynasty, and only remembered vaguely that a King had 6 wives and a Queen had red hair. That was only 6 years ago.I remember last year in religion we started studying the reformation so I picked up Antonia Fraiser's book on H8 and his wives and started to remember dates and people in the Tudor Period. Coincidentily I turned on the telly and The Tudors Season One Episode One was on and the names of characters were what I read in Fraiser's book - I thought I missed out on a couple of episodes, but when I got the DVD I realised I hadn't. Now i'm interested in all things Tudor. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I am telling my age here, but ... I first became interested in the Tudors as a child when I watched the PBS series. I read and watched everything I could about the Tudors and I still do! Kind of scary to think that I have already outlived five of his six wives. And, yes, I have read Gone with the Wind twice - once the summer I turned sixteen and once when I was pregnant with my oldest child. I love history - especially the bloody stuff, you know, the War of the Roses, the Tudors, War of Northern Aggression, etc.

When I was in like 5th grade they had just come out with those short royal diaries series and I read like the first 20 or so that came out before I got bored cause they were so short. But I got hooked when I read the really unfactual on Elizabeth and then a few years later when I was alil older and able to actually read books about Henry and such without scaring my 10 year old self, I read the Other Boleyn girl as well then read every other book I could find about them after. I still love the book though I shudder at the horrible movie, for everything but the costumes and some scenes.

The Tudors & I go back over 3 decades. It was my first time overseas & I was enjoying London. I visited Madame Taussaud's Wax museum & was fascinated by the Hall of Kings. I came upon Henry & his 6 wives and had to know more about this King. That started my fascination. I read anthing Tudor I could get my hands on and watched whatever I could relating to that time in English history. I never lost interst & probably never will.

We had, for awhile, had a book on the Kings and Queens of England on our bookshelf and I would every now and again grab it off the bookshelf and read, the Tudors were definately the ones that stood out, especially Henry and his wives. I was about 6-8 at the time so I was so confused as to why someone so fat would get so many wives. He wasn't the most handsome thing either in his portraits. (Please excuse the mind of my young self). It wasn't until early last year however that I really got interested in the dynasty when we started learning about the English Reformation in history class (though now that I have read more it wasn't nearly enough, I blame that on it being an Australian school, not a British one). Our teacher started teaching us about the wives of Henry VIII though now that I look back she basically said that Anne Boleyn did commit those crimes, I will need to have a word with her. Within a couple of weeks I was already fascinated and had read anything I could on the internet and was able to answer every question in class and was talking 'slightly' back to the teacher. Now none of my teachers try to mention the British Monarchy, especially The Tudors. The first book I read was 'The Other Boleyn Girl'. Not the most highly accurate book but it was a fascinating read and then I went and saw the movie in the following week. My mum and I saw The Tudors in the shops and my obsession with the show started there, with the discounted first season. My mum now regrets ever buying me the show because I won't shut up about but I love it. I have now read a lot of books and am continuing to get more, and even got one of my friends emersed in the world. I am trying to reach out to other times in history which I have like Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, French Revolution, The Victorian Era and The War Of The Roses but I always come back to The Tudors. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. My fascination with the Tudors started many years ago when I was around 11/12, I had a bad bout of the flu and was laid up and nothing to look at but the ceiling so my mother who is also a tudorphile, gave me a couple of her books on Elizabeth I and so it began. When I went to high school I had a great history teacher who loved her subject and so my interest grew. Later I would move back to my birth country and saw all the sights from Westminster Abbey, to the Tower of London and Hever Castle...etc. I worked in a few british libraries for a while in the inter library loan section helping writers and researchers find their books and read everything I could get my hands on including some really old works on the subject that you can't easily get hold of today. I didn't get my information from movies much at all.. and only saw them later as entertainment. A few members have mentioned "the Other Boleyn Girl" and I guess we can thank Phillip Gregory for at least getting people interested in this fascinating time period....if nothing else. :D I know I am biased but as modern movies go, I really think "The Tudors" is a better source of entertainment based on the time period than that awful movie.

My mother had a very keen interest in Tudor history, and it was always in the background. She had numerous books on the subject, as well as the various dramatisations of video (no DVDs back then!!). I began to take an independant interest for myself about two or three years ago, after mum left all her books to me in her will and I was leafing through the history ones. I was already familiar with the history, but only in as much as I`d studied it at school (I`m a Brit so its on our curriculum), and covered the Reformation at Uni. I really only had a basic grasp of the impact of Henry`s reign. I`ve learned a lot over the last few years, and I`m looking forward to learning a lot more.

My fascination started in a much different way. First of all, I still don't understand why. I am American and never studied British history at all. I am a big fan of the famous best selling author Susan Howatch, who I have mentioned a 1000 times on the wiki, but no one seems to know of her. Anyway, she wrote wonderful gothic novels that were all best sellers, starting with "Penmarric" in the '70's. That was followed by "Cashalmara" which takes place in England and Ireland. I read them strictly as novels. These were all NY times best sellers. Then came "Wheel of Fortune" which takes place in Wales. That was the spark that was waiting to ignite. That book changed my life, and there was no turning back.I became friends with a couple, when I was a newlywed, and she was a true Llewelyn, which meant nothing to me, at the time. Then they got a divorce, and I went to visit her in Wales for 3 weeks. It was like staying with the Kennedys! They are the oldest family, dating back to the Platagenets, and boy class tells. I keep reading Susan Howatch, "the Rich are Different", "Sins of the Fathers", and then low and behold, Ms Howatch now writes her famous "Church Series" a six book set of novels about the Anglican church leaders, and all their problems. Then she buys a million dollar seat at Cambridge, and has a religious epiphany, and gets involved with Anglo Catholicism and healing centers. Which leads to the St. Benet's trilogy. All the while I'm bouncing along, thinking these are just great books, and reread all of them, all the time. Finally, I start reading her notes in the back. "Wheel of Fortune" is based on John of Gaunt, and the War of the Roses, and bang. I've been reading novels by one of the great Tudor historians alive, and I don't mean David Starkey. Ok, then I start getting into Mary Q, and reading Margaret George. her Henry 8, Antonia Frazier, and boom. The Tudors comes to showtime. I am now fully obsessed, and guided by all you great people who are so knowledgeable, and feeding my addiction daily. Which leads me to the end. I am totally obsessed, and a bit concerned. I am not the fan type, and I have never been so totally absorbed in anything like this. I think about the Tudors morning noon and night. I run a bit, and that really focuses my obsession, as I run to all the youtubes made by fans the show. I miss the series so much I am watching it in the middle of the night online. I think I even know the script by heart. What am I to do when it's over? I can't bear the thought. I've seen Elizabeth like 20 times. I'm losing it! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

It's pretty simple. Pregnante woman + insomnia - husband (working night shift). The rest is easy to figure out. What I wasn't expecting my obsession with Cromwell! OOOOOOHH YEAH!!!!

It and my fascination and interest in European and specifically English history began when I was in the 7th grade we studied it and I found unique that people in those time did and could get away with doing some of things that were done! Principally throwing one church (I.E. the catholic church) out and establishing a new one just to more or less get a divorce and then execute and divorce your wife as you see fit and the whole tudor line it was just interesting how the chain of events played out. My further interest was spurred on by my finding out about the series which inspired me to dig further ahead and even into pre-tudor english history which is also really fascinating!!!

My dad is a history teacher so i've always had a love for history. I'm a right daddy's girl lol. And he always used to say that German history (his history) is quite boring except for the you-know-whos, so he much prefered English history to his own. I spent most of my childhood going around museums with him and reading up english history so i could impress him and get brownie points. I remember coming across a Tudor book when i was five or six and i was so fascinated by the six Queens that i just read everything i could get my hands on about them and the time they lived. I still do to this day!

I had heard about Henry and his 6 wives (which most people have unless you've been living under a rock!) but it wasn't until I saw The Other Boleyn Girl, which I loved, then I bought the novel, then the rest of Philippa Gregory's Tudor series and it kinda took off from there. Then I saw The Tudors (a while after it started) and fell in love with KOA and Princess Mary:D Not to mention Charles Brandon(who is quite possibly the hottest guy on The Tudors next to JRM!!!)

About twenty years ago in school my super wonderful inspiring positive knowledgeable social studies teacher did a section on Medieval and Tudor architecture. It led to my ongoing fascination with sociological and political revolution and evolution, upheaval, change, and transformation. I need to know and understand the larger processes and the details of events that change society and culture. The Tudor court was so refined and sumptuous - jewels and plate and tapestries oh my! How could anyone not be obsessed by Tudor history?? :-D What has honed my interest from general medieval, renaissance, and early modern history to an obsession with the Tudors was a study of Eleanor of Acquitaine. After being inspired and awed by Eleanor it was a idee fixe for me: I love any european history that involves women who have bent the rules, defied convention, ruled in their own right or as regents, made war, patronized the arts, created art and made history themselves! Some of my favorites are Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I, Eleanor of Acquitaine, Marguerite d'Angouleme, Isabella d'Este, Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Medici, Caterina Sforza, Lucrezia Borgia, Vittoria Colonna, and Veronica Franco. You can find some of them on these lists: http://home.infionline.net/~ddisse/ --- Other Women's Voices (pre-1700 writings by women) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_mulieribus_claris --- Giovanni Boccaccio's famous treatise on the importance of women in history Do you find this valuable? |

I've always loved history throughout my entire life.Ever since I was very little...one of my favourite things to do was go to the library and read all sorts of books! From The Ancients to WWII. Right now I am a University Student majoring in History (With Art History as a minor) So yeah...definitely continued on with my passion XD I have desires to continue on in an archaeology field as a masters, specifically conservation or battlefield. I will be honest though, at first I wasn't interested in The Tudors. I was already tired of alot of history shows or movies portraying a lot of sex, and sometimes I can be picky with historical accuracy. But I tried it during the summer and started watching Season 2 on CBC - eventually it warmed up to me greatly , and I was impressed with alot of aspects of it (Especially if one ignores the sex scenes) Overall, Queen Elizabeth I was always my hero, and of course that made me historically interested in her family which included Henry and his wives. I tried the show, and never regretted it since. (Oh yeah, I'm also a Lutheran lmao so Protestant history is also of great interest to me) 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

For me it all started with one man: David Starkey! Or rather his series on Henry's wives. I have always been fascinated with the personal side to kings and queens, and I really loved that series. And since then it has just grown. I have seen more and more and leaned a lot. And I can only say I have come to love Tudor England more and more :)
