Mourning for Jane

How long did the court officially mourn for Jane? She died in late October and was wondering if it extended through to Christmas and perhaps the new year? What a miserable Christmas that would have been! Also, how long was her funeral and i mean this starting from when she was laid out in state to when she was actually buried. Do you find this valuable?

Jane died on October 24th 1537; her funeral took place on November 12th. She was embalmed and laid out encoffined in lead in the presence chamber until October 31st when she was moved to Hampton Court Chapel to lie in state until November 12th the day of the funeral; after which she was taken in solemn procession (Mary Tudor who grieved intensely for this stepmother, led the procession as chief mourner; the Tudor rulers did not attend funerals) to Windsor and on November 13th, Queen Jane was interred in a vault beneath St. George's Chapel. The funeral rites concluded with a requiem Mass on November 14th. Henry did not put off mourning for Jane until February of 1538, a relatively long time for a man who abhored any tokens of death.

Henry VIII also made his court go into mourning. I heard that while some people felt that his mourning process was much too long, people was afraid to mention it to him. Thomas Howard , the duke of Norfolk was really upset over Jane's death. I think the reason Henry mourn Jane for so long, is because he wasn't just mourning Jane but Queen Katherine as well. Henry spent half of his life with Queen Katherine, and never allowed himself to mourn for her. so he was mourning the lost of two queens.

Henry rarely wasted any time looking back, and he hated illness, death and all of their attendant tokens. That he mourned four months for Jane is just proof of the fact that he sincerely loved her and grieved for this wife who had given him the long awaited son and did not live long enough to run afoul of his will. . He lost Jane to the same form of death as his mother's (childbed) and she may have been the closest in personality to Elizabeth of York. If he was mourning for two women, they were most likely Jane and his mother.
