Jane of course! She is such a sweetheart but really smart. She knew how to play Henry but also knew when she had reached her limit, a wise move considering who she was dealing with. She is such a good rolemodel for people both now and then. Stand up for yourself and your beliefs but be realistic at the same time. As much as you want to change the world you can't do it by charging in and doing it in one day. Take it nice and slow and win everybody over. Her kindness is also commendable. She didn't even have to give a second thought about her step daughters but she did.

First off, I will say Anne Boleyn. In a historical perspective, she really wasn't all that sexualized, and even had refused to become Henry's mistress for awhile *Apparently for 6 years* after he was with Mary Boleyn. She was very witty, charming, educated, and had a caring side. (Which is ironic, since it was great behaviour for a mistress, but no-no behaviour for a wife) She really tried to work hard and wanted to be politicaly involved in the government. She was also known to want to take care of her own child, even though it wasn't considered proper for a Queen to nurse. She appeared to have loved Elizabeth despite being not a boy, and doted on her regularly. Seems she only wanted a son just to make the king happy. In the show, she probably did act a little more aggressive than necessary - but in a way you can't blame her. Henry was cheating on her constantly, she was pressured to have a boy, and she was worried about her safety and more importantly her daughter's safety. Which is like Catherine of Aragorn - they were both trying to look out for their girls. And being an intelligent woman, it would feel horrid to be controlled and shut out. Plus you have to feel bad, considering in the series her own father seemed to have completely left her and her brother behind, only really caring for himself. So overall, I think she was poorly judged and treated very unfairly. Plus I am a big fan of Elizabeth I too. Other wives: Jane Seymore. Despite being strict, she was wise and caring. Even though she did not seem to show any empathy or concern for the last two wives before her, and Henry's growing trademark. And KoA: I agree with everyone else's statements - However I wished she wasn't SO loyal to Henry (He did not deserve that woman!) considering how he treated her. Also have a soft spot for Anne of Cleves. Guess the only one I'm not a huge fan of is Howard lol 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Are we talking about the show or history? I see some people saying that Jane had Henry wrapped around her finger but I recall reading and hearing David Starkey say that Henry lied to her and used her during the Pilgrimage of Grace. Also there are others here who say they admire all the wives, does that include Katherine Howard? It is probably between Jane and Katherine Parr. Jane was very sweet and had a good heart so i really admire that she tried to help so many people. I think to an extent she did wrap him around her finger, in that she knew how to flatter him and so at times she get her own way. I just borrowed one of the Jane biographies from the library and she did get her own way at times, like he reopened some of the monasteries for her, even though they were only small insignificant ones. And she managed to persuade him to bring Mary back to court.I also like Katherine Parr. She was very intelligent and independent. She had published books and had her own opinions, even daring to try and convery the King. She was very brave. And when he turned on her she managed to get through it by playing dumb. She was also very kind hearted and brought the Tudor family together. Both were good women. 6 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

Both Elizabeth and Jane Grey attended Katherine, and both girls developed a real love of learning thanks, largely, to KP`s encouragement. She was a remarkable lady. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. I don't have a favorite, I don't really have an interest in the wives, there were so man more interesting people in Tudor times. But I think I really respect Katherine Parr, because she was such a learned, intelligent lady for her time, even publishing a book. I also really pity Katherine Howard and I kind of dislike Anne Boleyn.

Do we show who we are or who we want to be by which wife we hold as favorite? I will always feel a soft spot for Katheryn Howard. Too often she is dismissed as a sexy teenager leading Henry on a chase while she milks him for all he is worth. But really, did she have any choice? As a teenager, I saw her as a tragic, beautiful victim dying young. As a young adult, I saw her as a victim of her family's greed and lust for power who petted and pampered and begged favors of her on her way up and swam away like rats from a sinking ship on her way down. Now, with teenagers of my own, I wish I could be the mother she didn't have to love her and protect her. Oh Lord, does that mean I will turn into the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk in a few years :O ?! Anyway, I agree with the positive comments on all the other queens - such diverse and wonderful women!

My fav wives are a tie between Anne Boleyn & Catherine Parr. Anne Boleyn did EVERYTHING you could possibly do for that time - except give birth to a son. Catherine Parr - a very very interesting person I would love to read more about her, she seemed to embody some traits from all the 5 previous Queen's but still keep her head (just!), and also managed not to be a step in her family's ladder to succes. 4 out of 9 found this valuable. Anne Boleyn absolutely!!! I think she was an amazing woman, she was fiery, outspoken, smart, she was like a 21st century woman in the renaissance. She was a reformer, she helped the poor and did so many good things for England.I love her story she was just another of Henrys victims, and she gave birth to Elizabeth the greatest queen of England,

Catherine Parr! She was a good step mother to all her step daughters and a good wife to all her husbands (four total). She was also highly intelligent, kind to all, and a true scholar/writer. (I am an aspiring author/Rowling wannabe, haha) Also, there was just something about her in "The Tudors" that was just an automatic attraction to me. I think it was just her likableness and down-to-Earth attitude. Joely Richardson did a fine job! I feel like out of all the queens, she is one of the most, if not the most, under-appreciated queen(s). Catherine of Aragon was also really respectable and stuck to her beliefs. (I am also CathoIic, so I could connect with her religious views) I felt like the way they portrayed Anne Boleyn was a little one-sided. She kind of came across as someone looking to win the "biggest attitude" award, not Henry's heart...but I could definitely see the chemistry between them. I just thought she was supposedly more "witty" and "intellectual" than the series showed. Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves were likable and seemed historically believable (although Anne was BEAUTIFUL, regardless of how she actually was in history), but Catherine Howard was a little annoying to me. I mean, I know she was really very young, and so this was probably pretty accurate, but still: "I would rather die the wife of Culpepper" ...seriously?

I have to say it's a tie between Katherine Parr, Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Neither of them had exceptionally joyous lives as queens, especially in later years, but they all persevered. Katherine Parr I like especially because she was sympathetic to both Mary and Elizabeth's cause and tried to be a proper mother to Elizabeth...
