HENRY VIII

I disagree that JRM makes a [great] HVIII. Keith Michell was the ultimate HENRY!! Richard Burton second!JRM might be a [great actor] but not as HVIII. I wish someone, someday would do the story of HVIII and his 6 wives the true historical way............NOT the HOLLYWOOD way!! For once get it right! Get the facts right because people think that what is on the TUDORS is the TRUTH! 1 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

I have to agree;while JRM is the definitive sex machine the movie makers want us to believe was Henry VIII, the real Henry and his children were known for having the "Tudor Gold" hair color. Don't get me wrong,I am enjoying the series as much as anyone, but, sometimes I want to yell"that's not right". The incoming Jane Seymour for one thing is lovely, certainly not the woman we see in her portrait. But,I have to say that with Anne Boleyn, they have done well.

As valuable and appreciated as an accurate account would be, I don't think that it will arrive on main stream. I watch a lot of Indi. Films and I think that would be the medium (if any) that would take up the project. Hollywood is investing millions and risking much, hence the Hollywood Formula was born and adopted.I am the first one to say that a "sex machine", blood, sex, and violence will pull me in before the newest chick flick, but there is also much to be said for making something different and brave! That was odd, wasn't it? Her eye color, when her "lovely expressive dark eyes" were known to have been one of her best features. I do hope that the series will be able to go thru the six wives,I want to see what they do with Ann of Cleves!!

"I disagree that JRM makes a [great] HVIII. Keith Michell was the ultimate HENRY!! Richard Burton second!I agree that Keth Michell was a very good Henry. He looked more like him and you saw him change with age. BBC was after accuracy. When Glenda Jackson portrayed Elizabeth she did so with a false nose to resemble Elizabeths. Many of the actors, in their roles, resembled the characters they were playing at that time, ie: Cramner, Robert Dudley, Cromwell, Wolsey. We've discussed this as well on other threads & agree that JRM is not Henry in a physical sense. However he does morph from an idealist (to some degree) to a tyrant. JRM addresses this as well in one of his interviews. He tries to capture Henry's personality & I think he's doing a great job. If you consider the other characters as well on The Tudors ie: AB, Cromwell, JS, Brandon, Cramner; none of them look the part, but they play the part well enough which helps me to forget the disparity. BEFORE THE TUDORS WENT ON THE AIR THERE WAS MANY INTERVIEWS WITH THE PRODUCERS AND THE CAST AND THEY STATED THAT HENRY PLAYED BY JRM WILL NOT BE A FAT BURPING KING THAT WE ALL ARE USED TO. JRM ALSO STATED THAT SO I THINK THE WATCHERS OF THE SHOW ARE NOT BEING FOOLED. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THEY ARE MATURED, AND NOT STUPID THEY KNOW THE SHOW IS ENTERTAINING US AND NOT TEACHING US. I AGREE ALL THE ACTORS WHO PLAYED HENRY KEITH MITCHELL WAS THE BEST. I HAVE THE DVD AND WHEN I WATCH IT I THINK ITS THE MOST ACCURATE. WHAT GETS ME ANNOYED IS THAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY UPSET WITH THE TUDORS BECAUSE JRM IS NOT GETTING FAT OR HE IS NOT BUPING OR LOOKS LIKE A SLOB AND I HAVE ASK THIS QUESTION BEFORE WHO WILL PAY EXTRA FOR SHOWTIME TO SEE THE SAME STORY . I WOULDNT NOT IN THIS BAD ECONOMIC TIMES.I PAY EXTRA TO HAVE A NICE TIME AND WATCH A FANTASTIC SHOW AND THATS ALL IT IS A SHOW.

Dear Lady Jane................its to bad that Kieth Michell is to old for the part of HVIII.As a [true] historian, I rather have it the right way, rather than just something to watch when nothing else is on TV. FACT is always better then FICTION!

The only sloppy looking Henry that I have seen in film was Charles Laughton and that was made in the 30's. And I don't think I would enjoy seeing JRM belching and scratching himself, either. There is a book titled "Anne Boleyn" by E.Barrington, published in 1934. In the book the author included many of Henry's letters to Anne. I always felt it portrayed Anne quite well, headstrong, fearless and ambitious, quick of wit. She didn't love Henry at first, but did as time went on. She would never have fallen in love with someone who was disgusting. Even Keith Mitchell as they aged him, might have looked huge, but he did look a King!!

In a very INTERESTING movie called Quills, Joaquin Phoenix is quoted to say, "A man who writes more that he reads, tisk! Tis a true mark of an amateur!” A lot of times I will spend a couple days not posting, and just catching my self up on what everyone is saying. The fun is making games out of the inaccuracies, staring at naked cuties, and having other people with similarities to stew with. This is not a show produced by the history channel or discovery channel; it lays no claim to accuracies. This is the fun of it all, we can play with mabey, shoulda, woulda, coulda. I think that is why people will get so defensive over the attack of the inaccuracies. It is like some one throwing you ice cream down on the sidewalk because it has high fructose corn syrup!

Honey-Beezz, I thought Anne Boleyn's letters are in the Vatican??? This person would have to get premission from the Vatican to see and read the letters! Somehow, I don't see that happening.

Your right, I knew through a friend that THE TUDORS were not the real thing! What about all the people out there, that BELIEVE what they are watching is FACT!! There are a lot of people who have no clue about history, other than what they see in the movies and TV...................and they believe it to be true! From your blog and some others, I feel I have hit a raw nerve! Sorry about that! I am a[realist] and you are quite [fanciful] in how you think and feel. And that is fine!! It takes all kinds to make a world..................enjoy! Do you find this valuable? |

I definitely agree with LadyJane, its just a show. If I want to see a documentary I would watch the history channel. The The Tudors "show" is put on to entertain not to inform.

I watch the Tudors for entertainment and even though all of the characters look nothing like their portraits, many of them convey what was going on at that present time. I know many do not like JRM as Henry but his personality does seem to match Henry VIII somewhat. I look forward to seeing S3 to see how he plays Henry since time is passing and quickly and he goes through at least two wives at least. Keith Mitchell was a fantastic Henry as well as Burton. The show is entertainment. When I see a shred of accuracy, that pleases me. PeaceArch (I think) Entertainment is exactly what the show is...When I want full accuracy, I turn to past and present legitimate historians. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Honey-Beezz, I thought Anne Boleyn's letters are in the Vatican??? This person would have to get premission from the Vatican to see and read the letters! Somehow, I don't see that happening."Now,take in mind this book was written in 1934;but according to the preface, the letters and poems both from Henry and Thomas Wyatt are authentic and were modernized only in spelling and condensed at need. Granted, much more has come to light in the years since, but the book was interesting in the descriptions and dialogue. This can be found in most online used book sites such as ABEBooks, and usually cost $1.00 plus shipping. Do you find this valuable? |

"I disagree that JRM makes a [great] HVIII. Keith Michell was the ultimate HENRY!! Richard Burton second! To me, Keith Michell's performance is cartoonish. That bumbling, cuddly, temperamental Santa Clause of a man was not convincing as a leader who hung on to his country for decades. Richard Burton's performance was about strutting around as Richard Burton... I never felt he inhabited the character. Eric Bana was believable, but the wrong physical type. He had the height but not the face or coloring. JRM couldn't be more wrong "physically" for the part but I buy him as a king and I buy him as a psycho with a sensitive side. So I'd say Bana and Rhys Meyers were best. I'd rather take someone who captures the soul of the part than someone who looks the part. According to English language scholars, the modern Oxford English accent is farther removed from Tudor speech than is the American accent today, and the Scottish accent today is probably closest. It would have been great if, in 2009, they did an historically accurate production of Henry's entire life and reign to mark the 500th anniversary of Henry becoming King. I think in light of Starkey's book "Virtuous Prince" they could have done a great production of his entire life. With the different things that were being done to celebrate this anniversary in London, a companion bio-drama would have been awesome.
