Gemstones and historical jewelry
Jan 10 2009, 12:37 AM EST
Many of you know me from my profile. I am a Graduate Gemologist, but long retired. When I studied for my degree, I had an opportunity to take classes on period jewels and antiques, but as I worked full time and had 3 children, I only took the required courses to advance my career. Basically, a Gemologist is a trained professional who can positively identify gemstones using techical instumentation. It took me 7 years to complete my degree, and I had little time for reading. However, I am fascinated with jewelry, and when I saw the crown jewels in Londen, I was captivated. Like most jewelers, I am superstitious, and historical jewelry hold many legends, and secrets. In reaality ALL gems have a story we will never know. However, jewelry has always been worn to adorn, and signify statis in every society dating as far back as civilization. I have started a Tudor library in my home, and although I have many books yet to read , I thought I might take a detour, and read some of these, as I am a bit bored with reading about royalty, and thought this would be refreshing. As I said, I know nothing about this subject, so I thought I would share some of my journey with you all. I am taking a short vacation, but will work on this further. I love all the spooky stuff, and the romance, and many jewels have curses, the Hope Diamond in particular, so this should be a hoot. I have 2 personal stories about cursed stones I will share later. These books are expensive, but they have gorgeous illustrations, and so I feel they are worth the investment. Happy new year to you all. It has been a very tough one here in the USA.

yes that was a rumor started by jewelers, as they are called amorphous stones, stones that break easily, So they are bad luck for the jeweler who sets them or repairs them as they usually break., so the customer is always responsible. They have been out of fashion for some time, but will be back. They are my birthstone, so I never had bad luck with them. But I dont wear them. Tourmaline is the alternative october birthstone. I have a very rare one from Nigeria, I don't wear that either, as it is too rare, and I can't afford to insure it. Do you really want the curse stories and ghost stories? they are genuinely firsthand but might be lengthy to tell both on one thread. there were witnesses for both . still amazing.more gem lore, Amethysts prevent drunkeness, Do you find this valuable? |

"YES!! Please do tell."ok here is one. This is about my mother. In about 1968, my father was into a lot of money. I had always grown up in a wealthy family, and my Mother had a beautiful 3 carat engagement ring. When my Dad became really rich(long sad story), he was very into New York, and had an office on Madison Ave, and insisted on buying my mother an 8 carat diamond ring, which he did. My Mother was a spiritual lovely woman who preferred beach houses and cozy sweaters, to the country club, and french restaurants, although she did love expensive food just not a fancy lifesyle. You see where I'm going here, my parents hated eachother., and had little in common. At some point, I don't remember, they went to Mexico on vacation, and one of her girlfriends told her not to bring her engagment ring there, (the 3 carat one). as there were "banditos" on the roads, and they could steal it. So she went to a fancy department store called Bonwit Tellers, long out of business, and bought an exact replica of the ring except it was on of the new synthetics called diamonaire. Tney no longer use that synthetic today, as there are much better ones. Anyway, she goes to Mexico wearing the $300 ring and put both real diamonds in the bank. Naturally, we had a housekeeper, and naturally, she told people about the ring. So around 1968, we had all gone out to dinner, and when we arrived home. I went up to my room,(I was 17), and everything had been gone through, clothes and drawers askew, and my jewelry box missing. A shame as I also had some pretty jewelry, lots of opals of course as they were my birthstone, and alot of other pretty teenage type stuff. I started to scream, not thinking, and my parents and brother and sister were downstairs. They were little kids. TBC Do you find this valuable? |

It never occurred to me the men were still in the house, you do very stupid things during a robbery, I know as I have been in several being a jeweler. My Mother was in the powder room downstairs, but heard me screaming even through the bathroom door. She was wearing the 8 carat ring! She took it off and threw it in a towel in the vanity, and as I went to find her 2 huge men with masks jumped out of the front hall closet with guns. They heard my Mother flush the toilet, and knocked on the door and told her to come out. They asked her where her ring was, and she said upstairs in my jewelry box. They escorted her upstairs, where she pulled a small embroidered box forom the drawer (I can see it now goosebumps), and then got all my fathers ties and paraded us into the dining room where they tied us up at gunpoint. Satisfied the ring was in the jewel box, they left. Natually they had cut all the phones etc, so one of us wriggled out somehow and ran next door to get help. The ring in the jewelbox was the synthetic ring!! They only knew what it looked like, an emerald cut, so they thought they had it. Meanwhile the 8 carat ring was safe in the bathroom, and my Mother locked it in the bank with the other real 3 carat ring and never wore it again, as she felt it was cursed!. Naturally the robbers tryed to sell the ring, and discovered it was fake, and came back several times and tryed to kidnap my brother. They never did, as we had guards in the driveway 24 7 until a professional alarm system was installed. And so both rings survived but my Mother never wore the big one ever again, and said it was cursed.ok there is more to the story, so I will continue.

When I was a junior in college I married my husband. Knowing I would inherit my Mother's ring, I didn't care about an engagement ring, and it was the 60's, and I was a hippie and not into anything but getting him down the aisle. After we were married a year, his mother died very tragically of cancer . I decided I should get a job, as I had finished college, and my degree was in Philosophy, so there was no career there. One of our neighbors Mothers worked for a jewelry store, and I found out they were lokking for someone. I went to the store and took an interview with my boss of later over 25 years, and he hired me on the spot. I was well educated, and young, and pretty, so he hired me, Needless to say, all the old goats there hated me, and did everything they could to keep me down, but even at $1.60 an hour I excelled. Many years later, I left the jewelry store, actually I was fired, because I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, and my boss thought it improper to have a pregnanr woman on the sales floor. By this time, I was the jewelry buyer, the head of the diamond department, and had started taking the diamind course through GIA. Naturally I was replaced by a horrible man who got twice the salary, and had half my qualifications, and got the title manager. After my daughter was born, I thought I'd show him, and got a job in the diamond district in Phila, with one of the biggest diamond dealers in the city. Sam and I were still close though, and he was really wanting me back. At this point, my Father had gone through all his money, and my Mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. My boss Sam knew my mother, and adored her, and when my father left her in poverty, she still had the 8 carat ring. Sam offered to take it to New York, to a large diamond dealer and sell it for her. Sorry, this is such a long story! but it happened over like 20 years.

ok I'll wrap it up. Sam went to NY with two armed men, yes guns, and came back with $40,000 in a briefcase, and then proceeded to escort me across the street to a bank where he opened a safe deposit box for me, and we put the cash in. He advised my Mother to buy municiple bonds with the cash, which she did, and she lived off that money until her death 6 years later. Some woman is wearing that ring. Or it has been recut, it was not a good cut, and has been resold. I know that someone has it, and it does have a curse on it. I wonder what ever happened. If I had it now, it would have been worth maybe several hundred thousand dollars, and I also would have sold it ,and never worn it, as I do believe it was an unlucky stone. Oh, I have the gorgeous 3 carat one, but seldon wear it, as I also keep it locked up, as I can't afford to insure it. My husband and I are close to bankruptcy because of the all the credit card stuff and housing crisis here in the US, but Hopefully Mr. Obama will pull the country together. I have another story, equally as long about the jewelry store, but this one has ghosts, I'll post it later. I hope you liked that one.

I would love to know certain tales of them. And I believe the opal to cursed. I did not meet my father until I was in my 20's it was somewhat of and has ever since now 20 years gone by an emotional thing for me. One thing I had once mentioned to my wicked stepmother is I would like something sentinmental from my dad. It could have been jewlrey or something from his High School but just sentimental. Well they are big into jinxs' medical theories matching by signs etc..so I KNOW she must have known the story or rumor of the opal. That Christmas I got an opal ring from my dad. I wore it everyday. My luck was getting worse and worse. Work issues, and a falling out with my stepmother which happened often. Anyways I believe the ring to be of bad luck, Therefore it was sold. Luck changed.......Who knows. One of my kids birthstone is Oct for Opal and I will not wear an opal. Do you find this valuable? |

I don't blame you, I think the stone is cursed by the person who gives it to you. My parents having an unhappy marriage and him buying that ring for the wrong reasons curses the stone. But I do think the curse stays with the stone. If your daughter is an October birthstone get her a beautiful tourmaline. They normally come in pink and green, but there are also turquoise ones called paraba tourmalines from brazil that are fantastic. Very expensive though. but many green and pink tourms are affordable and beautiful. I had a gorgeous one once and it cracked when I was washing my hands, so don't shock it in hot or cold water. Mine was heavily insured, and I replaced it with the chrome one from Nigeria. It is never worn, as I mentioned it is rare, but eventually, one of my daughters will inherit it, and probably sell it.

I can absolutely understand your reaction when you realized the burglary. It is quite common for people to assume that they are alone when entering a site. We were trained to get low, get some place dark, and take no weapons with you as they can be turned on you. I can only imagine how cold the fear was that coursed through you. I know you had to have gone though serious therapy to be able to talk about it so openly. I commend your bravery!

"Are these stories real...as in did they really happen to you? Can you provide a link to your gemstone books? My favorite story is the Sancy Blood Diamond!"yes this is a true personal account. I have 2 more, but they are lengthy to write, and I promise I will. I have been on the wiki for like 3 days, and have to take a break. But look for my page a Tudor library, which Ms Squirrlywas an enormous help, showing the photos, which show the book covers and read my profie. I will read them with you, as I have stated this is new to me, as I only know jewelry from a caeer prespective, not an historical one. But colliding my two worlds was inevitable, and I need to take a break from historical non fiction, and explore the true artifacts, the romance, and history that I have never sought out. I love all the Tudor costumes and dress, and that was my first impression of the Tudors, was the magnificance to the eye Michael Hirst presented. Please share your tale of the saucy blood diamond! Thank you for your comment. I have only told this story a couple of times, as it was indeed a terrifying experience, and ironnically, I became a jeweler in my later career life, which was strictly coinicidental. Yes, I went through therapy 3 times in my life, but oddly never mentioned this pivotal event in my life. I felt therapy was unproductive, as I never saw any results, and of course, I have 2 close friends who are top psyciartrists, who think its bull, and that only people with deep neorsis can be treated, and I am rock solid, just eccentric!Yes, I was very afraid, and when I became a jeweler, I kept guard dogs, and german shepards throughtout my lifetime, as I was always afraid of someone hurting my young children if they were playing in the yard or the driveway. No alarm system can protect them from strangers. Sadly enough, I lost my wonderful shepherd Jasmine, last summer at the age of 14. She was a diligent gal with very high standards, but was suffering, and I could not let her lose her dignity. I now have a state of the art alarm systen, 2 safes, and a safe room. I have not been to a mall since 9/11, and am terrifyied of flying, although I do occasionally. I don't think I will ever relax after having such a career, and was so relieved to leave it. But I still LOVE jewels, and so, refer to my Tudorcrazy library page for the books I would like to read with you all. Thanks again Do you find this valuable? |

Sometimes we resurrect the trauma in our childhood through our adult choices. Your story is so inspiring to jump back on the horse and ride until you get bucked. My mother kicked out my father when I was 4 and she had a long procession of new homes, men, and careers. She was in the military for a chunk of time and it took her away many times. Ironically when I graduated high school (very far from with honors), I joined the military and chose a job that was routine and filled with father figures that were wonderful mentors. ( I was a Heavy Wheel Mechanic). I vowed NEVER to marry!! I am looking forward to reading your other stories and I am going to check out your page right now as Ms. Squirrly has highly recommended it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I never went through therapy about it, and went through other terrifying smash and grabs later. Hwever after working arounf so many safes, robberies and handling very expensive merchandise, i became a fanatic about keeping large watch dogs, as I fearing my children;s safety. A security system doesn't help if you kids are playong in the driveway, and that's how my brother was almost kidnapped. I left the businss after the last robbery, as I had twin babies in cribs, and there was no way I could cnvice my boss to have a bodyguard in the store. I have a lot of valuable jrerlry, but never wear it. It is in the bank, and after years of never wearing anything costume, I only wear costume huge gaudy jewelry. A real chicken. however I love gemstones, and will always enjoy discussing them.Do you find this valuable? |
