How would Elizabeth I be remembered
Has anyone else wondered how Queen Elizabeth I would have been remembered if her reign was as short as her siblings? What accomplishments did she have in her first five years (Queen Mary I length of reign), or first seven years (King Edward VI length of reign)? Please understand this question was asked out of curiosity and not to besmirch the Queen's memory in any way!

Burning at the stake for cats
I have learnt something quite odd. In the medieval time, cats were seen as the symbol as the devil. Under her reign, Mary I would have cats burnt because they represented the " devil": the prostestant beliefs. And it when the same under Elizabeth I, for the opposite reason: representation of catholic beliefs.
Here is the link to the video where I learnt this ( It is in French):

What do you think of it?

French people have the sense of irony
I think it is the same in others countries like the UK or the USA with others names though, but in France each day of the year honours a saint. Mary died the seventeeth of november. And in France, the seventeeth of nomvember is the day of... Saint Elizabeth. Funny, isn't it?

Where did the myth of Bloody Mary origin from?
So obviously there was a time when Mary went from being sympathetic and beloved Queen to 'Bloody Mary', can anyone tell me more about when it happened, who were the main instigators of the myth, what was there motive etc?
I'm finding it all quite interesting and would love to be able to compare it to the Gloriana myth of Elizabeth. Can any of our more learned friends on here give me some details, perhaps a good book to recommend?

Mary I's Pearl - now on sale
If you have a spare $2 - $3 million, La Peregrina, the pearl that Philip gave to his queen Mary I goes on sale.
Richard Burton paid $37,000 over 40 years ago and gave it to his "queen" Elizabeth Taylor who recently passed away. It will be interesting to see who manages to scoop this little treasure.

The betrothal
I was just reading the profile of Cardinal Wolsey when I read about the betrothal of Charles V to Princess Mary. I am thinking how was this going to work? Henry and Katherine had no other heirs, so what would be the purpose of this marriage? Uniting England and Spain? Did Henry and Katherine hope to have more children and it would be a great opportunity for Mary to become Queen of Spain and the Holy Roman Empress? Your thoughts?

New biography on Mary I
According to "Mary Tudor: Renaissance Queen" a special blog on Mary I post that a new biography on the queen.
"Finally Yale University Press’s English Monarchs Series has included Mary! The upcoming biography on the queen had been written by Dr John Edwards, Modern Languages Faculty Research Fellow in Spanish, University of Oxford, and is due out in August/Sept. Edwards has written extensively on early modern Spain, Catholicism and Mary’s grandparents, the famous Catholic monarchs Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. He was one of the editors of Reforming Catholicism in the England of Mary Tudor: The Achievements of Friar Bartolomé Carranza (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2005) – a must read for Mary enthusiasts."
The synopsis:
‘The lifestory of Mary I—daughter of Henry VIII and his Spanish wife, Catherine of Aragon—is often distilled to a few dramatic episodes: her victory over the attempted coup by Lady Jane Grey, the imprisonment of her half-sister Elizabeth, the bloody burning of Protestants, her short marriage to Philip of Spain. This original and deeply researched biography paints a far more detailed portrait of Mary and offers a fresh understanding of her religious faith and policies as well as her historical significance in England and beyond.

I read that when Mary became Queen, she relased Thomas Howard from the Tower of London, I know he was Catholic, but does anyone know if she knew he was part of the faction to put Anne Boleyn on the throne?

Katharine of Aragon and Mary I meeting in 1534
I read somewhere that some historians were of the opinion that, during Mary's time at Hatfield when she fell ill, Katharine was briefly allowed to visit her. In every other account I have read it states that Mary/Katharine never saw eachother again after 1531. Can someone shed any more light on this theory???

How much.
How much did King Henry truly love Mary. In season 1 he states that she is the pearl of his world however he willingly casts her aside in favor of the children he would have for Anne Boleyn. she was clearly not a son that he wanted, but in reality, how much id he actually love her?

Elizabeth Under Mary
Under the reign of her half-sister Mary, Bess was imprisoned in the tower for allegedly conspiring with rebel forces to usurp the Queen. Later rumors were afloat that she was flirting with Phillip II of Spain to keep herself alive.
I wonder do you think she actually did those things? I believe that she did conspire to overtake Mary, but I have never been sure why other than she had a sense of entitlement to the throne. Mary and Elizabeth's relationship hadn't completely soured until this point so why would she risk all those things? As for the Phillip situation, Bess was know to be a flirt so it could have happened.
