Joan Bergin, Costume Designer in an interview with Jill at ShowtimeFan, April 7th, 2008: "One of the things we want to reflect in the costumes is the changing fortunes of the characters. Anne’s costumes evolve more than anyone else in the show. Her clothes get more elaborate and elegant, to the point that she matches her King by the end of the season. She evolves from being despised as a young opportunist to someone who, by the time of her execution, people knelt down and took their hats off to. We went to a great deal of trouble to achieve that transformation. The material we used in creating her Coronation dress is 150 years old - hand-spun silver which we found in a shop in London. It’s absolutely exquisite. Costume plays a crucial role in visualizing the development of this character from young and gauche Daddy’s girl to this quite magnificent Queen. As an actress, Natalie has matched everything we put around her; it’s a terrific performance." "In a feature film, you might have three ‘set-piece’ gowns for Anne Boleyn. Here we have at least one or two every week! Anne had about 17 major costumes, including jewels, head pieces, shoes - all made from scratch. "

Season One

The Masquerade where Henry first notices Anne Boleyn	Comments: Others have commented on the historical inaccuracies of the dress, so I'll skip right to this: Though Anne looks positively enchanting, I think a bolder color would have become her better in this scene. Had it not been for the close-ups of Dormer and Rhys-Meyers, Anne would have been just another pretty part of the masque like all the others. -TheRisenFalcon I am in love with this gown. Apart from the fact it's transparent, It is fantastic. The bodice isn't tudor though, but with Anne she gets away with it! I love the mask and the crown on her head and around her neck is brilliant! Grace_B This is quite a nice dress, but seriously, no one would have worn this during this period. The one which Anne wore during 'Anne of the Thousand Days' perfect! They didn't have short sleeves, the bodice would NOT have been transparent and the V-shape bodice wasn't present during this period, either (a mistake which lots of people have made). -KatherinetheQueen Is that bodice see-through? *gasp* It is! Bleh. It looks like an extended-length tutu for ballet dancer. Longest is down to the calves, so that doesn't work, either! TheOtherTudorGirl5 This looks like medieval underwear to me. I much prefer the black version of this, which is much more inspiring. But the mask is beautiful. latristessadurera I like this dress on the whole especially the ruff and the mask. Shame the see through bodice lets it down. Patches near the eyes give sparkle. LadyHistory. I really love the skirt. But I wish the bodice wasn't slightly see through; and I also wish it had long sleeves. I adore her mask though and her banner fits her personality. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X The lacy skirt is nice but i think the bodice looks better as Jane's underwear rather than a dress. Would like the neckpiece if there wasn't so many ruffles. I don't think she suits white/cream. amore_angel I love this costume. Especially how Anne's banner fits her personality quite well, as opposed to Henry's honesty banner. - Leeloominai357 The Costume Designer said that this costume was inspired by Degas paintings of the Ballet costumes like "Swan Lake" & Balenciaga's corsets. It's a beautiful scene and when I compare it to other movies/tv shows of this momentous occasion where Henry first "notices" Anne, this one stands out. Is it perhaps significant that Henry kills and eats the 'swan' he first set eyes on in this scene? - MsSquirrly Love Anne's costume although I would have preferred just a bit of a sleeve. Isn't that "Honesty" banner more than just a little ironic? LOL Angelsun Yeah, I know, Anglesun, when I saw that I laughed. Anyway this costume is my favorite of all the gowns, it's so elegant and so beautiful. I would LOVE to be able to wear it just once. -Arabella_Tudor_Brandon Although Anne appears in many many gorgeous gowns over the two seasons this one holds a certain charm in my opinion. I love that even though a few other women are wearing the same gown it stands out so much more on Anne/Natalie. I love her hairstyle and makeup in this aswell - perfect for a memorable entrance. Natalie looks stunning! - QueenAnneBoleyn I admire alot of this gown because it brings out Anne Boleyn/Natalie's image very well,it's an absolute stunning gown. -Padri 81 What a nice wedding dress this would make. -GoldenAged.ER yddib. Reminds me of Swan lake. Very romantic and simple. No wonder Henry noticed her! The only thing I did not like about this one was that there were no sleeves, it would be a nice Sweet 16 though. -Anne'sCurls I want, want, want this dress!! What a way to make an entrance! I absolutely loved this gown! It shows that Anne was beautiful and elegant, like a swan! At first when I saw the Scene I did not like the frills around the neck but i now think that this outfit wouldn't be the same without it! Natalie looks amazing and her "Perseverence" Banner was very fitting! - A_Tudor_Lady As beautiful as this costume is, it's ludicrously bare. Even just a sheer white or gold sleeve might have made all the difference. -Brennalarose She's really beautiful!!hmm she reminds me of a swan.Probably that's why in the end of season 2 Henry ate a swan...Because he got rid of her... BoleynGirl I'm not too much of a fan of this costume. While it is a pretty thing, it is grossly inaccurate for the times. You see this kind of stage costume in ballets in the 20th century most, most notably in Swan Lake. In the Tudors era, it is highly inappropriate for a woman to go sleeveless. Not to mention that none of the Tudor era bodices ever looked like a corset. And the material for the skirts did not exist back then either. Also neck ruffs were made popular later in the Elizabethan era. ~Charlie-Beth-Hayden Love this dress! Its so virginal katzklawz04 I love this dress it's very pretty. I even like the see through bodice. Lady_Amber I love the dress, but this isn't a Tudor period dress. princess212 Lovely, though it is not accurate at all. Anne in the royal colour purple - not a colour of her status at the time	This dress is pretty - but NOT sensational. Anne's attempt to flaunt her newfound status is dampened because this dress is neither bold nor particularly flattering; also, it doesn't have the bold hues of a true royal purple. The headpiece and necklace are beautiful, but her bodice is too tight; it would be better with some lining along the top. Also, the embroidery on her bodice really dwarfs the rest of the dress. Not my favorite. -TheRisenFalcon I am in love with this dress! Although it's more maroon than purple. The pin works incredibly well with the dress. It's certainly the style of dress that would have been worn in this period, It looks lovely and Natalie really suits it - both in style and colour! Grace_B This would have been a gorgeous dress if her trumpet sleeves had been turned over slightly and pinned to reveal some of the lining (something which was common at the time), if the skirt was stiffened rather than pleated and her neckline would have been adorned with jewels instead of just left plain. And don't even get me started on the embroidery on the embroidery on the bodice, that just ruins it completely. Also, I would like to add that although this colour isn't considered to be purple today, this would be considered burgandy, as someone had already said, this would have been the colour purple during this period, and for that reason I give this gown a thumbs up since it's so authentic. I absolutely adore the jewellery and coronet. -KatherinetheQueen Technically, she's not even supposed to wear purple. The bodice is unflattering. The jewellry, I don't mind. TheOtherTudorGirl5 It is a rather uninspiring dress. It's not very eye catching and i would never had guessed it was meant to be purple. I adore the long, flowing sleeves. latristessdurera I like the colour and the sleeves. Her jewelry and tiara make the statement rather than her dress though. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X I like the colour but its a bit bland despite the golden pattern. It was meant to make a statement but i think it failed. amore_angel My problem with this dress is that although it is purple (the royal colour) and so signifying her rise the neckline has no decoration at all when a lady of status would also have a decorated neckline - VivatAnne1536 I love this especially the colours however I do agree with VivatAnne1536. In fact I think there should have been more jewels all over it not just on the neckline. The coronet is beautiful though. - QueenAnneBoleyn This one, I don't care if there are not enough jewels on the front of her gown. She wasn't full royalty yet anyway. Just the purple was enough. I don't really like the decoration on the neckline as much as I used to. I love the color purple. And as always, the jewels just make it 100x better. Absolutely gorgeous! -GoldenAged.ER I think the caption explains why she doesn't have the decorated neckline. Color was not befitting her status at the time, she would have pushed the envelope too far. karenofbethany I dont really like the dress but it definately sends the message: I am the Queen! - A_Tudor_Lady This gown really shows off her unique style. -automaticeyes Is this really purple? Am I just clolor blind? It looks like there is purple in there but its not a purple gown-Anne'sCurls What many here do not realize is that purple in medieval times and under medieval/Renaissance dyeing methods does not produce the same hue as modern people are accustomed to--but a color that would be called "burgundy" after the invention of artificial dyes and fibers. Under natural methods, "purple" is red. As a reenactor, I am pleased to see Anne depicted here in true medieval purple. I am equally appalled at the cut of all the costumes in the series. We know EXACTLY what they wore. It's not like trying to do early medieval work or some of the Asian reconstructions. Thousands of reenactors play this period perfect. They should do the same. The dress would have been nice if it wasn't for those golden things on the corset top which totally spoils it. Loving the jewels though. mary_bess_edward I don't like the dress that much.But I love her jewels... BoleynGirl I do like this dress, but I don't think it fits with the hair. -Nan_Bullen This dress is gorgeous and would definitely cause a scene like it did over her rank. She looks every inch a Queen here, and purple is her colour for sure!! I love the crown. -Tudor_Queen Now this dress, to me does not even look like purple, more like burgondy with a purple like shimmer, contrary to what it is said to be. This dress looks more like what was worn back then, although the gold design on the bodice isn't exactly true to the times and the neckline would be adorned with pearls and jewels. The undersleevs would also be more poofier too, but I can let that slide. Also, Ann should be wearinga French Hood through the series rather than tiaras. Charlie-Beth-Hayden We already know that the costumes are not entirely accurate, and that they were not intended to be. The costume designer was aiming to breathe new life into the era, and to modernise it so that the audience could relate to the characters more easily. If Anne was decked out in a completely accurate costumes, with shift, coif and hood etc, it would be harder for the audience to really see Natalie's brilliant performance through the costume. Btw I think this costume is stunning, I love the jewels especially. the_most_happy I love this dress although I agree that it does look more burgundy than purple, but I know people who would argue that burgundy is a type of purple, so, oh well. And I think that even though it doesn't have a decorated neckline that her beautiful necklace and brooch more than make up for that. She looks fantastic. And she probably wore tiaras some of the time, since she was the (future) queen. MademoiselleBoleyn I really love this dress even though it looks burgundy not purple. The colour looks right on her. Lady History. I love this dress!!!! I love the colors with to it just fits Anne perfectly! anneboleyn21 Very regal and suits her down to the ground katzklawz04 I'm not a fan of this dress, I think the gold detail on the front spoils it. I do love the color though it screams Queen Of England. Lady_Amber I love this gown, even if I am not keen of the gold embroideries. In my opnion, it shows well Anne's rise. Anne, at a dance in Episode 1.5 and in Promo shoot for Season One	What a lovely, fey-looking dress! I still think the richer, bolder colors suit Natalie - and the vivacious Anne - much better, but the contrast between this gauzy-white dress and Natalie's long, dark tresses is stunning. -TheRisenFalcon This is a lovely dress, it's simple, floaty and elegant but nobody would have worn it in the publicity, I agree it's more like nightwear or underwear. It may not be her best colour but I think it suits her well. Grace_B This is beautiful but it would not have been worn publicly, this kind of style is better suited for underwear or nightwear. Anne wore white a lot, but it isn't Natalie's best colour. -KatherinetheQueen Meh, not my favourite, but it looks nice. White isn't her best colour, though. TheOtherTudorGirl5 I think this would make a good night dress but not a court dress. It is very pretty but i think it would have looked better on someone younger or fairer, like Anita Briem or Tamzin Merchant. latristessadurera I can't help but think this dress should be kept for a seventies type programme. Headpiece is nice though. Lady History. Very light and flowy, and I love the sleeves. Her headband/headpiece is so pretty. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X I love the lace, its so light and flowing. The sleeves are amazing. But again i don't think the colour or really the whole look suits Anne. amore_angel This was my favourite dress in season 1 -I don't know why I like it but I just do, i't was a pity we didn't see this dress again in the series because it's just beautiful-Neta07 It would look beautiful on any of the queens, especially Jane. karenofbethany No, they're not the same dress. The one in the promo is a nightgown (maybe it's the same, but they fixed it). Anyway, pretty good dress, the headdress makes a lot. -LadyLorhen I love this dress, and actually made a headband to match the one in the pic! Too lovely! -AnneBoleyn87 I think they had her wear this in season I because it is so virginal looking and she was sending a message to him that she was not available as only a mistress. karenofbethany This dress says to me I am a virgin, youthful and graceful! Love the head-peice! - A_Tudor_Lady This dress is so elegant and really shows Anne/Natalie off well. I love the headress!! - QueenAnneBoleyn Very simple and yet elegant. -automaticeyes I LOVE HER HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!-Anne'sCurls It's beautiful.I agree with Anne's Curls....I love her hairstyle... BoleynGirl This gown, if it can be called that in the Tudor era, looks like a nightgown to me and should have been left for the bedroom. Charlie-Beth-Hayden This dress is to musch like a nightgown but still beautifull katzklawz04 This would look good as a night gown but not as a formal dress. It's too casual for my liking. Season One Promo Shoot	As a night-shift, this is all right. I don't think of it as a costume so much as an undergarment, but it looks well enough in promotional photos (except for Anne's unabashed-strumpet poses, but that's beside the point). What more is there to say, really? It's underwear. -TheRisenFalcon The sleeves are so elegant and I think they are beautiful, although simple! But that's all... I don't really like the rest of it, I've seen better nightgowns in the series. Grace_B She looks like a common ***** here-no offence. The open-leg thing is just... erotic. TheOtherTudorGirl5 I like the sleeves. Nothing more can be said though, it's only a shift. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X Wish she would have chosen a more ladylike pose rather than pornstar, legs spread open. So cringeworthy. That said i do like the sleeves. amore_angel What? That doesn't count as a dress! -A_Tudor_Lady Agreed! Underwear doesn't count! -Brennalarose This is a pretty accurate shift for the era and is used to sleep in, and also the garment worn under all the other undergarments, including the corset. One of the more accurate articles of clothing in the series. Charlie-Beth-Hayden They actually usually slept naked back then. MademoiselleBoleyn I love this shift. Yes it's plain but she looks fierce & sexy. Exactly how we wanted her to be. I'm also loving the pose too. Lady_Amber
Season One Promo Shoot (Different Nightgown from above)	Strangely enough, I like this nightgown a lot less than the last one, BUT I think it becomes Natalie better - probably because the poses in these two shots are so much more tasteful. Natalie's cascades of dark hair provide such beautiful contrast here; this is more the Anne Boleyn of my imagination. But the lace, the fabric, and the off-the-shoulder-style are just not very attractive to me. -TheRisenFalcon She looks wonderful in this shoot and the rich wine red colour of the rose is alluring, but this doesn't look cosy at all. Grace_B Seeing as how no one has commented yet, I will at least say something. Like always I adore her hair. I have these two pix on my wall only because of her hair. As for the nightgown, it sometimes looks pink to me and I am not sure if that is an accident or was done purposely. Honestly the pink makes me think something red bled into it by accident. -Anne'sCurls
Anne in Henry's dream And in a Seasons One Promo Shoot	This is not a dress I would have chosen for this scene. Anne's gauzy-white dress from Episode 1.5 would be perfect, I think. I can imagine her as a fey, elusive figure in white, dancing tantalizingly out of Henry's reach. I don't mind the gold here - not really - but the embroidery is (forgive me) something I can see adorning a royal fool at a court entertainment. She looks pretty in the promo shot but the rest of the time, the color makes her look washed out. Nice dress, but not for her. -TheRisenFalcon It is lovely, but I agree that It could have had maybe square neckline with jewels, a fitted corset and tudor bell sleeves it would have been perfect! They could have done loads more with this dress, Nevertheless, she still looks elegant and floaty. Grace_B I completely agree with everything latristessadurea said! If it had a fitted corset, maybe with the beads only used on the bodice, Tudor bell sleeves, a square neckline adorned with jewels then you would have a perfect Tudor gown. This is just too modern, in fact, even I wouldn't wear it though. -KatherinetheQueen I actually like this, even though it looks like a bunch of balls were glued on. The bottom picture with the tiara looks lovely, though. TheOtherTudorGirl5 I really hate this dress. It would have been nicer if it had a fitted corset rather than having it continuously flow into the skirt. I like the colour but i don't think it suits Natalie's complexion, especially in the poor lighting where she looks rather orange herself. And the beads would have been charming in moderation, perhaps on either the corset or the skirt, not both. latristessadurera. I really love the way the skirt drapes in the first picture. I like this dress, the silky material is wonderful and I actually like the little beads. Her hair also looks amazing. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X The way the skirt drapes and folds is beautiful, and makes a great effect in the first picture (top left) the_most_happy It would have been a nice dress if it wasn't for those spotted things. Whoever said it looks like she has a skin disease is 100% right. And the dress is a bit plain. Perhaps some embroidery to finish it off would have been nice. She looks like a sesame seed bagel. amore_angel I think this gown would look a lot better with a square neckline - but the fabric is absolutely lush! - Shadow_in_the_Sun I love the hairsyle but the gown itself is a little plain for my liking. I agree that the fabric is gorgeous though! And I think there should be more jewellery. - QueenAnneBoleyn I agree with QueenAnne, the gown is not one of my favorites. The hairstyle is beautiful though. I want my hair to grow that long. lol. Yes, it's just not one of her "wow" gowns. Plain, simple.. something you would see on Jane more likely. -GoldenAged.ER The way they filmed this scene was very lovely, dream-like, but I agree that the gown is not my favorite. -KingsRose Isn't this the "seduce me" scene? It is more subliminal, presenting her wearing gold which represents royalty but it is simple - showing her womanhood in a plain and obvious way. karenofbethany Although the dress is plain, Natalie's beauty stands out...she is not in competition with her wardrobe. - offwithherhead I don't like it very much, although the scene is great. However, she makes it beautiful, as always.-LadyLorhen This a beautiful scene and if any of you have seen the picture of most of the Tudor cast at a feast and Anne/ Natlie is wearing this dress, it looks a lot more flattering on her then, then it does in these pictures! However it is true, anne/natalie flatters the gown, not the other way around! I think this dress would have been better if it had more shape and definition! After all Anne/Natalie has got such a great figure and this dress just hangs on her! -A_Tudor_Lady Due to this being a dream, I can forgive a good deal of the shaping. It looks ethereal and unreal, meant to flow rather than hug. I find it to be one of her sexier looks. -Brennalarose The fabric just isn't appealing. -automaticeyes I think this has got to be the worse dress/fabric i have ever seen. It looks like she's got some weird skin disease. Not flattering at all! mary_bess_edward I didn't like this dress...But she's really beautiful in season 1 promo shoot.Love her crown... Since this is more of a dream inspired by infatuation, I'll not critique it other than saying that this gown would have never existed in Tudor history. Charlie-Beth-Hayden This dress is so beautiful! I love the pearl-studded silk! Anne looks very ethereal. MademoiselleBoleyn At first i didn't know what to think of this dress and then I started to love it and the way it fit her, its just very flowy and dream like and is perfect for the scene its in. anneboleyn21 The spicy gold is fantastic. It glows in the dream scene. Lady History. Hate this dress its far to knobbly katklawz04 I like the nice floaty shape, but the fabric just reminds me of a starfish. Not sure why... pretty_historian I really don't like this dress. The color is not flattering & the shape of the dress is just weird. I agree with whoever said it should of been a corset & skirt rather than a full length dress. I do like the little balls on the dress though. Anne at Hever Castle with Thomas Wyatt -1.3 Promo Shoot for Season One	This dress is maddeningly inaccurate - a perplexing mix of styles from very different countries and time periods. However, I do think it works well in her scene with Thomas Wyatt. It shows Anne as he himself might have viewed her then - feminine and beautiful and unattainable, like a maiden straight out of the stories of courtly love. But this dress is very out-of-place in the rest of its scenes. I think it was a poor choice to show it in the early Tudors promo shots, too. -TheRisenFalcon This is unusual and is rather different to any other dress on this show. The floral pattern is nice but isn't anything Anne would have worn, it just isn't her character. The dress itself is lovely but fails as a Tudor gown. However, Natalie suits it a lot so she gets away with it, being this beautiful! Grace_B This dress was just a complete fail, sorry. :/ The floral pattern is lovely, but it's far too heavy. It might have been used during the period, I'm not sure, but I doubt Anne would have worn it. The little puffy things at the top of the sleeves is more of Elizabethan style. The off-the-shoulders style ruins it as well as the semi-attached sleeves and again, is completely innacurate. However, it does suit Natalie. :) -KatherinetheQueen EW! The bare-elbow thing is so not attractive! The off-shoulder is inaccurate, and the pattern reminds me of my grandmother's bed spread! Do. Not. Like. I like the earrings, though. TheOtherTudorGirl5 Thiss dress had so much potential. The floral pattern was very pretty if a bit 1940s, but the style completely ruins it and she looks no better than a courtesan. With such a simple pattern they should have kept the style simple too, but the off shoulder cut and complicated style of the sleeve, both puffing and leaving the elbow exposed, completely ruins it. latristessadurera. Comments: It looks like they nicked a granny's 150 year old curtains and cut it up to make this horrible mess! Nasty! Lady History. Not keen on this dress at all; I hate the sleeves and I'm not keen on the pattern either. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X Is she bare elbowed? If yes, it looks stupid. If not, it looks it and just doesn't go at all. I don't like its off the shoulder, dislike the little puffballs. Not sure if i like the material either. The floral pattern is nice but its too heavy. amore_angel I don't care for the design of this gown (or any of the off-the-shoulder creations in this series, they remind me of Ren Faire Wench Garb! Plus, the semi detached arms just look silly) but the fabric itself is very beautiful. I'd love to know where it's from. - Boudica I loved this dress when I first saw it, although I do agree with Boudica that the semi-detached arms looks a little silly. But I love off-the-shoulder dresses, or any type of clothing, and the fabric is incredible. - carteremily When I first saw this dress I was not to sure of it. But it has grown on me. I especially love the cut and how Natalie/Anne's hair was loose whe she wore it goes perfectly with the dress. - QueenAnneBoleyn Oh, well the off the shoulder idea doesn't really appeal to me. Her hair is gorgeous in that scene. It's almost a dark reddish brown. I even tried to get my hair colored the same exact way. I loved her hair that much. lol. I like the dress well enough. -GoldenAged.ER Don't think AB would have dressed quite so provocatively as befitting her rank. karenofbethany It looks like a curtain that my grandparents would have. Too heavy and i hate the puffs on the sleeve mary_bess_edward Sorry, but I think this costume is a "miss". Don't care for the off-the-shoulder design and the fabric reminds me of curtains. - offwithherhead Wonderful. Simply wonderful. This is my favourite Anne's costume. The design and the pattern, the colours. Simply amazing. -LadyLorhen Im not a huge fan of the pattern but I think the off the shoulder look gives it a modern tinge that makes me like the dress even if it isn't something Anne would have worn! I also love this scene which gives it an extra bonus! -A_Tudor_Lady I love the pattern, but would prefer it if the dress was not off the shoulder and had attached sleeves. But the pattern is so lovely I can over look those minor flaws ;p -AnneBoleyn87 This gown pretty much reminds me of curtains. -automaticeyes I love love love this dress. It's possibly the best dress of season 1. ~Dakkietudor It's very romantic but definetly NOT Tudor. They would have never showed that much chest and arm. Antoinette 2 This Gown would have been more accurate if it was not off the shoulder and if there was a shift worn under it. You would see a shift poking out in the parts of the sleevs where her elbows are showing. Charlie-Beth-Hayden I like everything about this dress except for the fabric. That should be different since Anne was supposed to have good taste. To flowery for me but i think it suits her katzklawz04 Love the dress, she looks amazing in it. The only criticism I have is the open elbow sleeves, it makes the dress look untidy & not finished. At the Field of Cloth of Gold	This is honestly one of my favorite Anne Boleyn costumes. Yes, I can only really see the top of the bodice, but I think it was the perfect choice for her first appearance (in the royal presence). My one gripe is her headpiece; it looks too gauche. But this dress is so stunning, I'm just surprised Henry didn't take notice of her sooner! -TheRisenFalcon I agree with KatherinetheQueen, we can't see enough of the gown. But of what we can see I adore the rich red she is wearing for the sleeves but the white section dosen't look like a real gown, more like a night dress that she has worn, or even underwear, which, for Tudors, is not a good look! Grace_B Hmm, well to be honest, we can't see enough of the gown to comment, only the top part of the bodice. I agree with TheOtherTudorGirl, the white part looks fit for a nightgown. I love the red, but I don't like the way it's used, it gives it a jacket kind of style. -KatherinetheQueen I like it, although the bodice looks like a bust-flaunting night gown. TheOtherTudorGirl5 The crimson sleeves go well with the pretty lacey, ruffled bodice. The simple nature of the dress compliments the chunky B choker and stops it from looking chavy, however, the headpiece ruins this a bit. latristessadurera. 	Oh, wow. What a marvelous color for Natalie. Now THIS is more like it - how I think Anne should look in the early years of her ascendance. Apart from the awful, puffy sleeves and the rough-looking gold lines on the bodice, which I really don't care for, I rate this costume very high. -TheRisenFalcon Natalie looks amazing in red and gold together. The jewels on the bodice look lovely but I'm not fond on the puffy sleeves. The thick embroidery has gone slightly over the top though. Grace_B I really don't like this one. The only things I like about it is the red and gold, since their my favourite colours, and was used at the time and the fact that the colour suits Natalie so well, but apart from that it isn't a very good gown. The puffy sleeves are more fit for Elizabeth. The embroidery is just a bit over the top with all the stripes. -KatherinetheQueen The patterns clash. I don't like it. Also, some people did wear sleeves like this they were just way more commen in Elizabeth's time (Joan Bergin talks about it at the very beginning of the costume page). 	This is a very unflattering gown. I don't like the color at all, and I certainly don't think it suits Natalie. However, it is suitable for the scene, as it makes Anne Boleyn, this usually vivacious woman, seem suddenly cold and aloof. - TheRisenFalcon Blue is a lovely colour but it's obviously not Natalie's colour. It is a fantastic dress itself, but isn't the best of Natalie's and I couldn't see Anne wearing it. Grace_B I absolutely love the blue, but it doesn't suit Natalie at all and I don't even think the real Anne would have worn this colour. The sleeves are Elizabethan, not Tudor. -KatherinetheQueen I love it, but it doesn't suit Natalie at all. The neckline doesn't fit her well. TheOtherTudorGirl5 The shade of blue is so lush, but it does not compliment Natalie's colouring. I think it would suit a blonde better, like one of the Jane actresses. The floral bodice is very pretty and the sleeves would have neen too if they were not slashed. latristessadurera Love the bodice and colour. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X I think the blue washes her out a little. Anne suits more rich colours. Lady History. Lovely bodice embellishment, but I think the neckline perhaps does not fit her very well. Don't like the bodice or the split sleeves. amore_angel My only issue here is that the sleeves would probably look better with an under sleeve puffing out of the slashes. It just looks too bare, but the color is lovely. -Brennalarose Lovely dress and colour. Don't think it suits Natalie's tone but its very pretty mary_bess_edward I agree with mary_bess_edward, it's a lovely dress but it doesn't suit with Natalie's skin tone, but I don't like the sleeves. -Nan_Bullen As above, this gown would have most likely been worn by Elizabeth rather than Ann, and there should be a a shift puffed through the slots in the sleeves. Charlie-Beth-Hayden This dress is so beautiful although it doesn't really suit Anne's character in my opinion. I do like this dress but I agree with others who have said that it doesn't fit Natalie very well. The color also drains her & it should of be worn by someone with lighter hair. 	I'm so happy with the top of the bodice; I've seen a lot of off-the-shoulder necklines throughout the show, so this is a welcome change, accuracy-wise. I really don't like the colors, though. I don't mind simple - in fact, I rather like the simpler patterns - but I think, at the very least, red should be the dominant color on the bodice, not the gold. Perhaps a more subdued headpiece is well. So, not my favorite. But because of the more accurate square-neckline, I can't hate it. - TheRisenFalcon Because the bodice is glittery it looks as if the hole dress is glitter coated and sparkly all over, which is just going way too over the top. I think it Anne of Cleves looked better in it, I don't know why. Grace_B I agree with Charlie_Beth_Hayden, this dress looked much nicer on Elizabeth, but even then, I didn't particularly like it. The bodice just looks horrible with the red velvet and the red and gold glitter just went overboard snce it continues into the skirt. I don't know, it's just a bad outfit overall and the headpiece is just as bad. I would have loved to see her wearing a French hood. I can't believe they didn't include them on the show, especially since both Anne and Katherine Howard wore them frequently. -KatherinetheQueen This gown was used in The Virgin Queen miniseries starring Anne Marie Duff. You could really see the amazing detail of this gown in it. You can't really see it real well on The Tudors, but you guys should see the detail in The Virgin Queen. Pictures from it should be uploaded here for Tudors fans to see. Charlie_Beth_Hayden It's a horrible dress to begin with, but the random red on the bodice just kills it. The headpiece isn't my favourite, but it looks amazing at the same time. I think the necklace only barely saves it. TheOtherTudorGirl5 It is a very glamorous but equally ugly dress. The bodice is quite inspiring with its gold and red glitter, but as usual they took a good idea too far and ruined it by continuing it into the skirt. The headpiece is too big for her and looks rather Amazonian than Tudor lady. latristessadurera I really hate this dress. And that headpiece... don't get me started. Bad outfit overall. ~ TheFreeSpirit-X This is an awful dress to put on Natalie. It goes way better on Anne of Cleves in season 4. Doesn't fit well either. Lady History. Anne at a dance- 1.8 Opening Credits	Lovely! Very accurate dress, but for the sleeves (not sure what the designer has against bell sleeves!). I can see Anne Boleyn wearing a gown like this at court. And yes, I agree that it would be more stunning with a red- or purple-tone. But this is actually in my Top 15 Costumes list (the court version with the free-flowing hair, not the one that looks more like a riding habit). - TheRisenFalcon The style is one of the most accurate for the period out of all gowns throughout the whole series. It's a shame it's slightly plain because it is one of the dresses of Anne's that she actually may have worn and it suites Natalie quite well. Grace_B I agree that's it's slightly dull which is such a shame because it would have been a gorgeous dress and accurate for the period and probably something Anne would have worn. The sleeves should be bell sleeves and the neckline would have been adorned with jewels. I like the fact that they didn't go overboard with the floral pattern like they did on one of her prievous dresses. -KatherinetheQueen I will says it's a tad on the boring side, and I would have liked it if the sleeves were the bell sleeves. All in all, I like it. TheOtherTudorGirl5 This is such a boring dress. The colour is bland and does nothing for her complexion. The bodice is too plain and the skirt looks like a vintage 1940s quilt. episode 1.6 and 1.7 Anne in promotional shoot for season 1	The headpiece is so ostentatious! I can't stand it! ARGH! However, this is one of the few pastel-colored gowns that I think looks great on Natalie. It is so tasteful and elegant. - TheRisenFalcon I'm not too fond of the headpeice but the dress itself is immense! I think it's lush, the colour really suits Anne but it isn't great together, a bad mix. The style is nice, but the colours are icky together! Grace_B Urgh, it's that horrible headpeice again! The only thing I like about this is the gold on the skirt, but the colours clash and they just look so random together. The shade of blue suits her. But I really don't like this dress, it just looks tacky. -KatherinetheQueen That yellow part looks like it is going to fall off. The headpiece looks a bit tacky, too. The unusual fabric color. embroidery, and the rich full skirt makes this such a beautiful piece. The sleeves are my only point of dissent, they just look like they should have been designed a different way (of course they're not historically accurate either) either trumpet or bell shaped would be nicer. I also think I prefer the smaller headpiece in episode 1.7 (bottom right) although I can see why the huge headdress would be appropriate for the scene in which Wolsey first realizes Anne Boleyn's a raising star. -Boudica Yes Boudica, I thought the headdress was "over the top" but now you bring that up, it looks like their reasoning was to show her as a 'rising star'. - MsSquirrly I love this! I don't agree that the head dress was to much I actually think it looked exquisite and went perfectly with the scenes it was in. Gorgeous colours as well. - QueenAnneBoleyn The head dress looks foriegn. Not Tudor like. Maybe if they took off the top part of it and left the bottom piece it wouldn't be so weird looking. I think it was appropriate though, just not to my liking. I liked the second head piece. As for the dress, it's beautiful. I love it. -GoldenAged.ER Love the dress and the colors, but I have to agree about the "to big" head-dress....it is too much. In the pictures to the left, Natalie is wearing the same dress but with two different head pieces...in the first your eye is drawn to the head piece and the second, your eye is drawn to her smile. Episode 1.7 Episode 1.9	This would make a scrumptious winter riding habit. I can't imagine how Anne could tolerate wearing such a costume in the spring or summer months, and it doesn't look quite right indoors. However, I think this dress is gorgeous; it would be wondrous winter attire. - TheRisenFalcon This dress is adorable, It really suits Natalie too so it's such a shame it isn't really tudor. I agree with KatherinetheQueen that the pendant would look better as a pin, i love it though! Grace_B I do love this dress and I adore the waistcoat, but it isn't Tudor, it's more Victorian. I don't like the pendant as a necklace, it looks so much better as a pin. -KatherinetheQueen This is one of the few dresses I like, but it looks so much better with the pin instead of the necklace. TheOtherTudorGirl5 I would say this looks more Victorian than Tudors, but the upper half is lovely. The fitting is amazing and i love the waistcoat which gives it more shape. I'd rather see black skirts (more stunning contrast), but the bodice and the feather-bedecked hat are irresistible and I'd rather like to own this myself! - TheRisenFalcon This dress is not tudor! The hat's cool, but not the dress, it looks like somebody's just gathered this bits of fabric and sewn them together, I wouldn't be surprised if they had! I dont like the sleeves at all but Its an ok dress! - A_tudor_lady I did not like this dress. It looked like it was 2 or 3 outfits combined into one and it didn't work. Nothing seems to fit with the other fabrics.-Anne'sCurls The corset is vile. The sleeves and skirts don't match at all. The feather in the hat just makes it worse. Big no no! mary_bess_edward Again this looks like a gown that Elizabeth would wear rather than Anne. The sleeves are more of an Elizabethan period. 	Charming! Natalie wears this so well that the inaccuracies don't bother me very much. The black-and-white look serves an excellent contrast, and I love how the costume's simplicity makes it seem so very elegant. - TheRisenFalcon It may look Elizabethan but Natalie really suits it. I agree that most of Anne's gowns aren't tudor, more elizabethan or a few victorian! But 'Riding clothes' are written all over the gown, just for Elizabeth! Grace_B Again, another Elizabethan gown! That's the main problem with a lot of Anne's dresses, they just shout Elizabeth. The sleeves are nice and would have been worn for a riding dress. Now, add bell sleeves and remove those ridiculous waist adornments, and I'd call it a perfect dress! I especially love it with the elegant purple cloak. This is in my top ten. - TheRisenFalcon These rich wine reds look stunning on Natalie as Anne and it's the type of colour she probably would have worn. It is not tudor though!!!! This really annoys me, right colour, wrong style!! For most of Anne's gowns too!!! Nobody would have worn sleeves this short in the period and the V shaped bodice wasn't fashionable in this period. Grace_B I agree with TheOtherTudorGirl, red looks stunning on Natalie and was also known to be Anne's favourite colour, so I'll give this dress praise for that, but yeah, it just looks too Victorian. The V-shaped bodice style didn't come till later and the sleeves are too short. -KatherinetheQueen The style is about 200 years too early. And the sleeves look like they were an afterthought. Episode 1.10	Unflattering colour, VERY unflattering pattern...and it gives her a "Renaissance-Festival-wench-girl-with-a-heaving-overflowing-bosom" look. Not my favorite. - TheRisenFalcon The sleeves are 100% Elizabethan and I think the pattern is unflattering, the fabric isn't nice either. She dosen't suit peach or light pinks. However, apart from the sleeves, the dress is tudor style, especially the square neckline. Grace_B Another Elizabeth dress and the colour doesn't suit her. I don't like the fabric either. -KatherinetheQueen It may not be her best colour, but it looks gorgeous on her. I like it. One of my favourites! Anne's Lady in Waiting dress Season One Talking to Queen Katherine of Aragorn	In my top five. This gown is magnificent! The color, the bodice, everything but the sleeves. It is so becoming and makes Natalie stand out without being too ostentatious. I'm not a fan of the veiled or the free-flowing hair look, but I've always been so impressed with this gown. - TheRisenFalcon This is, by far, one of the best dresses from the whole series! She looks lush!!! I cannot get over how beautiful it is with the pins and jewels and the skirt and the sleeve pattern. You can see Katherine in it too!! I adore it, to die for! I want it! Grace_B This is definately one of Anne's best dresses and you can see Katherine's style in it. The embroidery and brooches on the bodice is to die for and for once, they haven't gone overboard. She looks so sophisticated and this also is something that Anne would have worn as a lady-in-waiting since she really liked to stand out. -KatherinetheQueen I think my explanation is quite clear when I say this is one of her best dresses and I want it. But I agree with Grace_B that Mary's dress in this scene was prettier - in fact, more what I'd expect from Anne, even as a young girl. I'm not sure what to say about it except that her French hood is very pretty, and I like how this really emphasizes her "B" seed-pearl necklace. - TheRisenFalcon This looks more like a chunk of Nan's sofa than anything else! That cap is lush though and looks fantastic on her long hair. It's also Elizabethan. The fabric is outrageous... Ick! I don't like this one. Grace_B Urgh, this is hideous! 	Stunning! The sleeves are Tudor-style! I love this color and the dress matches my image of Anne Boleyn on the rise. I don't like her golden skirts; I think two more subtle stripes of gold with a delicate golden pattern in the center would be lovely. 	I adore this. She really does look like a maiden out of the tales of courtly love - beautiful, cold, and unattainable. It looks enchanting and brings out the color of her eyes. The colour and fabric and the whole style of it is just unflattering and isn't accurate at all. Seriously, SHORT SLEEVES! The French Hood looks bad too. -KatherinetheQueen I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it. The sleeps aren't accurate at all, the colour is unflattering,-regardless as to who is wearing it- and the hood and skirt don't match! Worst dress of season 1, I think. TheOtherTudorGirl5 ergh, nothing about this is flattering. I respect the designer's aim in modernising the series, but the short sleeves are just ludicrous the_most_happy Short sleeves and a high neckline look stupid and weird. Lady History. The colour is uninspiring. The short sleeves make me hate the entire outfit even though i can't see the full bodice or skirt. It really just ruins it. amore_angel Now that is a French Hood! Though the gown, even if we don't see much of it, what we do see is not only ugly but short sleeves??? they did not exist until centuries later. 	Absolutely lovely. This is one of those dresses that suits the scene and the mood so well. I like the gown's colour and cut (though I would rather see a square-neckline). Other than that, I have no complaints. Oh, and the necklace is beautiful. - TheRisenFalcon She suits this one! I think she looks lovely. However, it looks like a christmas gown and it would be lovely for christmas tide. I think Mary wears this in Season three at christmas tide with The King and Jane Seymour. Grace_B The neckline isn't my favourite, but the colour suits her, the jewelry works, and she just looks so lovely. TheOtherTudorGirl5 I think Mary wears this in season three?And I'm almost certain Elizabeth wears it during her "I will have no man rule over me" tirade in 'The Virgin Queen'. I'm not really a fan of the round neckline but other than that it's really pretty. The fabric is beautiful the_most_happy The colour suits her down the ground and the necklace is lovely. Something should be in her hair though. Lady History. The colour is beautiful on her. Red is Anne like black and gold is Katherine of Aragon. Its a beautiful dress despite its plainess. amore_angel The neckline should be more squared and adorned with pearls and jewels. The sleeves should be Tudor Bell sleeves, make those alteration and you would have a very nice gown that can look like it belongs in the Tudor court. Charlie-Beth-Hayden I love this gown, I just wish that we saw more of it. MademoiselleBoleyn Love it, red is her color. Lovely necklace too. Lady_Amber Was it speculated on this site that this gown is worn by Princess Mary during Christmas in a later season? I for one like the the way the gown is made and the amount of clevage shown is provacative without being overly slutty. Anne should have worn this in S2 when she is celebrating the holidays with Henry and wearing that horrible "show everyone my beast" gown.-AC'11
	Hmm...I think this dressing gown has potential, but I still think that Anne belongs in bolder tones. Jane Seymour or Catherine Parr would wear this better. - TheRisenFalcon Jane looks better in this, I think, although Natalie is fantastic and looks amazing in it! Grace_B I think Jane looks better in this, although Natalie-as always-looks glorious. TheOtherTudorGirl5 She wears it nicely as a dressing gown and Jane wears it well as a court maternity gown, however i think it looks better on Jane as it goes so well with her complexion. latristessadurera. I love this outfit but it looks so much better on Jane than Anne. The embroidery on the collar is amazing. amore_angel Is it just me or does Anne look like a possesed zombie in the first picture? I love the dressing gown thing though. It flatters her and the colour is very pretty. I love the detail at the top! A Tudor Lady Lovely color and detail. Very romantic and flowing.
