THE QUEEN'S DISCUSSIONS

SCENE 1

SCENE: At a grand table in an unidentified palace surrounded by oppulance, 6 WOMEN sit contemplating one another. ONE WOMAN, with a calm but determined air about her, begins to speak.

CATHERINE PARR: I believe you know why I've called for us all to meet here. It has been 10 years since Anne of Cleves' death, 10 years since the last of us departed the earth. We need to air out a few things.

KATHERINE OF ARAGON: Well, since I was Henry's first wife, I will start things off. I'm going to ask all of you a question and Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard I expect an answer and not the usual "headless" shoulder shrug that you have given in the past.....What were you thinking??

KATHRYN HOWARD: (Pouts) It's hardly nice of you to make fun of those of us who were not fortunate enough to be banished off to an old, dreary castle. And besides, I've found that thinking too hard about anything always complicates things. Look at Anne. That's why Henry liked me.

ANNA OF CLEVES: (Scolding toward Kathryn) You clearly were not thinking when you met with Mr. Culpepper...that's why Henry did NOT like you.

JANE: (smiles curtly, almost nervous) But Katherine I believe that is why Henry chose me, his most beloved wife and Queen. I was so different than Anne. And I did after all produce a MALE heir!?

ANNE BOLEYN: That was just the luck of the draw darling, as we have all come to know now. Don't take yourself too seriously Jane dear...after all, it is obvious that Henry surely didn't and I don't need a head to see that! And... a lot of good did that do! Where is the little imp, by the way? I want to thank him for keeping the throne warm for my sweet Elizabeth...I mean Her Majesty By the Grace of God The Queen of England, Ireland, and France, Defender of the Faith and Supreme Head.

KATHERINE OF ARAGON: (smiles proudly) Without MY daughter Mary...your sweet Elizabeth would not be Queen.

JANE: (to KOA smiling with much more confidence) I had hoped you approved of my decision to make Mary his godmother. Although my son died young and may not have been a great ruler, Mary looked after both. Your strength, Katherine (OA), gave your daughter a different and mighty strength. We know Elizabeth was a beautiful ruler but we must not forget they were children with complex lives growing up. (She then grins and tells ANNE BOLEYN) Remember Mistress Anne, Henry was around much longer in Elizabeth's life and had many who helped mold her life and what became her mighty rule. (She glances at the other wives) Well what say you all?

ANNA OF CLEVES: (Nods in agreement) All good, good children; I wish Henry would have let me looked after them for longer than he did. (Directs an exasperated glance towards KATHRYN HOWARD) It seems he felt they were in better need of a playmate.

KATHERINE OF ARAGON: (Sighs and nods with ANNA) While I shall always care for my usband...he had a terrible habit on placing himself above is children and not caring how is descions affected them...like marrying a woman younger than is own daughter. (KATHERINE shakes her head) Clearly he was not looking for Mother when he chose you, Kathryn.

KATHRYN HOWARD: (Indignant) Well, I should think not! He wasn't capable of making anyone a mother by the time I got him! The tricks I had to play...Dear Catherine Parr, I don't know how you stood it! (Shocked silence, then KATHERINE OF ARAGON and ANNE BOLEYN both let out loud cackles).

ANNE BOLEYN: (Smilling) My dear cousin....Henry was barely capable of making ME a mother, and that was before his "tragic" jousting accident! Pray tell, what was his excuse with you? (KATHERINE OF ARAGON nods in agreement with her rival)

CATHERINE PARR: I know! Thank goodness I had Thomas after him.

ANNE BOLEYN: Thats a point! (ANNE rises and points menacingly at JANE) What the hell did your brother think he was playing at going after my Elizabeth?! (Then to CATHERINE PARR) And you took your time sorting it out, didn't you?

CATHERINE PARR: Oh Anne, don't go losing your head... oops.....I mean don't get so excited. It was all innocent fun, and besides nobody got hurt....even your precious Elizabeth. She was a lovely precocious child and I did protect her, so don't you dare go pointing your 6 fingers at me.

ANNE BOLEYN (to CATHERINE PARR. As she stands and gets very close to CATHERINE) many I loved died because of such falsehoods. How dare you.

CATHERINE OF ARAGON (- in her beautiful accent -) Oh Anne you think you are to be pitied. Look what you did to my life your lucky your daughter became the ruler she was ,if not you would not be the interest you are today. Look at all these ladies on here fighting over us (she gives a slight chuckle).

ANNE BOLEYN: (Grudgingly) You are true, I suppose. Did you ever think anyone would take such an interest in us?

CATHERINE PARR: Well, when I became number six I thought we might all get a bit of interest, but not this much! Isn't it funny though, we're more famous than him in a way. I mean, he's known for having six wives and changing the church, and that was only because he wanted to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. He'd be nothing without us!

KATHERINE OF ARAGON: We all know him.....Selfish from his had to his toe...As long as he needed me for the allianc with my country, nobody, not even him could've cared less about me not being able to deliver a baby boy....then it was Anne's chance to shine but when she failed she lost more than I did...and so on. Without him, my dear Catherine, none of you would be sitting at this table right now....Think twice before you open your mouth...It's all about him..you all...we all were like puppets in his hands....

CATHERINE PARR: Come on Katherine, give yourself more credit. He needed you just as much as you needed him, even if it was only for a time. Where would he have been if you hadn't have defeated the Scots when he was in France?

ANNE BOLEYN: (Burst out in laughter) You must joke ? I helped his Majesty change things as they once were! As much as I think so little of you other 5 we did indeed have a common thread. We built him up on that high throne of his!

JANE: ( with a little smirk on her face, glances towards ANNE OF CLEVES) Anne, you're very quiet and looking a little smug. I think, out of all of us, you faired the best. After all, when Henry wanted to get rid of you he gave you a position to be envied....sister. And how did you manage to get Hever? Henry wasn't in the habit of giving away castles. You never had to deal with the "give-me-an-heir" or "nurse-my-fat-bloated-and-decrepit-body" issues. ( then raising a glass of wine) Here's to you Anne of Cleves!!

ANNE OF CLEVES: Thank you, dear sisters. It wasn't easy putting up with that foul mouth of his..the nerve of him calling me a "flanders mare" and telling the courtiers that I smelled for goodness sake! As I know Catherine Howard and Katherine Parr are already well aware, that bum leg of his was what was emitting an "odor most foul!" I could barely stomach my muttin as dinner!
