| born 12 October, 1537 - died 6 July 1553 Gentility: Tudor family Position: Crown prince & heir of King Henry VIII, Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Wales, crowned King Edward VI when 9 years old. His entire reign was mediated by a council of Regency first led by his Uncle, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset (1547 - 1549) and then John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland (1549 - 1553) Personality type: Edward was a kind and generous child who was spoiled by a loving father and two adoring sisters Mary, who was his godmother and Elizabeth his favourite sister. He was a very bright child who could read and write Greek and Latin by age 7. Highly intellectual and a pious Protestant, but was also known to play pranks and skip classes in favor of sports - his favorites were tennis and hunting. Signature look: In paintings, Edward is usually depicted as a thin, pale youth in his later years, although historians recently concluded that Edward was a healthy tall boy and enjoyed good health until the last six months of his life. As a very young child, he is depicted to be a rosy-faced little boy with bright grey eyes. He shared the characteristic Tudor red hair of his father, Henry VIII, and his half-sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. Endearing trait(s): Studious, serious and unusually gracious. Foreign ambassadors found him charming and sweet-natured. He was against the burning of heretics and tried to enact laws to aid the poor. Before he was king he had a good relationship with both his half sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. After he attained the throne, however, he enjoyed a peaceful relationship with Elizabeth until the Seymour scandal, and because of religious differences he could not get along with Mary. Annoying trait(s): His father's stubbornness. He could be cold when circumstances called for it; he was very guarded. He is often accused of priggishness and a savage temper, according to Reginald Pole, later Archbishop of Canterbury, heard from people, that, in front of his tutors, the young king, in a fit of anger, tore a living falcon into four pieces , but this may have been catholic propaganda. Health: Fell ill with a "quartan fever" at age 4, but otherwise healthy until he contracted small pox in 1552, which probably weakened his immune system and led to his untimely death at age 15 from what was probably pulmonary tuberculosis. Burial: Westminster Abbey in the chapel of Henry VII |

CHARACTER CONNECTIONSFamily members: Henry VIII-Father Jane Seymour-Mother Princess Mary- half-sister Princess Elizabeth- half-sister Edward Seymour- uncle Thomas Seymour- uncle Henry VII- paternal grandfather Elizabeth of York- paternal grandmother Sir John Seymour- maternal grandfather Margery Wentworth- maternal grandmother Romance(s): Because of his age at his time of death, Edward knew little in the way of romance. However, on separate occasions, there was discussion of betrothing him to Mary, Queen of Scots to unite Scotland and England but she was smuggled out of Scotland and betrothed to the Dauphin of France, later King Francis II of France. Later there was talk of betrothal to his cousin, Lady Jane Grey, granddaughter of Princess Mary, the Dowager Queen of France and Duchess of Suffolk (younger sister of King Henry VIII). Enemies: The Catholic faction | Friends: Princess Elizabeth Tudor - with whom he shared a residence early on. "Mother" Jak - his nurse. Lady Bryan - his governess. Queen Catherine Parr - who became a loving step-mother to him. Tutors: Bishop Richard Cox, Sir John Cheke, Jean Belmain and others. His father arranged for a privileged group of 14 well-born children to share his education: Henry Brandon, the young son of the Duke of Suffolk; Charles Brandon, an other son of the Duke of Suffolk; Henry, Lord Hastings; Robert Dudley; Henry Sidney; and possibly even another cousin, Lady Jane Grey. The Prince's favourite companion seems to have been Barnaby Fitzpatrick, a cousin of the Earl of Ormonde. (it has been traditionally thought that Barnaby was appointed as Edward's "whipping boy" but there is no contemporary evidence to prove this). |

Season 3 | c.1538 Video clip about Holbein's painting of Edward"Edward was about fourteen months old at the time of this portrait. He is depicted almost as a mini Henry and as rather serene for a toddler. Holbein wishes to emphasise Edward's majesty and show Henry that he has a son destined for greatness. The portrait was given to Henry as a New Year's Gift in 1539; in return Holbein was given a silver cup. " |

I don't know if this topic was already posted, but i will put it up any way. Can you imagine what it would've been like if Edward didn't die? I mean what differences would have happened over the long years of his reign? If he had children then Mary or Elizabeth may not have become queen of England?
