I don't think there will be any mention of Mary Q as season 4 is almost upon us. However, Henry was pivotal in Scottish history. While Henry 8 was in France fighting, Scotland made trouble, and Katherine of Aragon waged a successful campaign against them as regent. The king of Scotland was killed in battle, and She had his blood stained coat returned to show Henry. Henry wanted the young Queen Mary Stuart to be betrothed to his son Edward. The terms of this betrothal was that the queen had to live in England and be raised at court until she was old enough to wed. Mary's mother Marie of Guise the queen regent, appealed to her powerful family the Duke of Lorraine to escape to France, where she was betrothed to the king's son Francois. She was treated due her station in France, and married the young prince who would become King.
Henry was very vengeful of Mary slipping through his fingers, and waged horrible retribution on the Scots called "the rough wooing" He ravaged towns, killed innocents, and captured many royal persons as hostages. Naturally much animosity was created between the Scots and the English, thereby allying Scotland with France in history. Mary was used as a pawn, as all women, and was seen as a very ineffectual Queen who brought ruin to her people. If she had remained unmarried, and had more training in statescraft, she would have been very much like her cousin Eliz !st, would beheaded her. A very tragic chapter in history |
