Princess Mary
A Light in the Darkness

Setting: The Lady Mary sits quietly alone at table with a quill in hand and a parchment set before her. Mary has just finished writing a letter to her father, in it stating that her parent's marriage was invalid. While a candle flickers, sheding a eerie light in the room, it hides the raging flames of a internal battle within Mary's heart, mind, and very being.

MARY: Has it really come to this? Am I really doing this?
[Mary looks at message written on the parchment]
MARY: My heart pains at these words I have written, while my mind barely manages to grasp it...but I feel something, something telling me this must be done, these words must be read and heard...or I will never be heard again.
[Mary looks across the room to a Cross displayed in front of a lone window]
MARY: What would you have me do? Is this another challenge of my faith? Of my undying devoution to you? To prove to you in these troubled times I have always believed in your word and teachings? Or...or is this what you want me to do? Do you want me to live so that one day I may bring back rest to this realm?
[Mary sighs heavily and looks at a miniature portrait. She speaks aloud for the first time]
MARY: Mother. My sweet Mother. What would you have me do? Everything you did in your life you did for our Lord and in many a cases...me. Would what you tell me? You are not here...but neither is she, and now one of our faith now speaks gracefully and loving to Father of me. She is kind towards me...something...something I have not experienced since I last saw you in this life. Am I to believe this kindness? Or am I to forsake it.
[Mary stands up and moves toward the Cross, where she then kneels, still clutching her Mother's portait]
MARY: My life is no longer in neary the peril it was since her...but it is not the life I was expecting after her demise. I find my fate more forward to me and from my Father yet. He will not see his error, he will not!! And now I must choose...I must choose who I am. Oh God, Oh Lord, please send me some sign, send me something to see your will!!
[Just then the wick of the candle reaches it's end, leaving Mary in the light of moon shining simply through the window.]
MARY: What is this? I am in darkness, yet the light from the otherside continues to shine upon me. Is...is this the sign, is this your way telling me what to do...or what...what to realize.
[Mary follows the light, as the shadow of the Cross falls upon her]
MARY: I realize now....I understand. I am in the darkness right now...but the light of God is on the other side, shining upon me...I have the Lord's blessing upon....and....
[Mary glances upon the light on her Mother's portrait]
MARY:...And I have my Mother's strength....and they have lead me to this point. They want me to do this, they want me to live to see the light!! They want me to vanquish this darkness....and so a sacrifice must by made....but this will be the first and last!! I will do their will and I will live!!
[Mary turns to the parchment on the table]
MARY: This is nothing but words, the truth to eyes of others...but not the truth to me...not to my mind and not to my heart!! I will know this and live with this but only I shall know this.
[Mary takes the parchment and leaves the room]
MARY: Trials of faith are not easy but I know I was meant to do this and I know I will do as was asked of me by God.....and my Mother.
COMMENT: I've always felt very sorry for Mary and the trials she went through. I think this is a good script for how she truly felt!

COMMENT:This is a very good fans cript. It shows Mary's isolation, her suffering, her faith and her love for her mother - those traits remained prominent in her character all her life and determined a lot of her actions, including her ambivalent realtionship with Elizabeth and her conviction that God had placed her on the Throne to bring Catholicism back to England. Remembered as "Bloody Mary", Mary Tudor was above all a woman crushed by her suffering and starved for affection.
