The MARYROSE Henry VIII's pride and named for his sister and the family emblem the Tudor Rose.
She was built around 1509-1511 and part of Henry's 5 year build up of English Naval Forces. That build up was due to one main fact Henry had a fear that someone could challenge him for his throne. And that challenger could come from France, like his father Henry VII. Henry VII came from France to challenge Richard III and that never left Henry VIII's mind. The MARYROSE was one of the FIRST ships to be able to fire broadside. It is said that the MARYROSE could fire ONE shot and sink a ship! Henry had her rebuild in 1530.
Henry VII was at Portsmouth Harbor on July 19, 1545 when the MARYROSE led the rest of the English Fleet out of harbor to battle the French. The MARYROSE outran the English Fleet and came under fire from the French. She put about to fire broadside and to wait for English support. As she turned a sudden gust of wind blowed her over and the low gun ports being open QUICKLY filled with water and The MARYROSE SUNK quickly! Most of the crew drowned from the confusion AND because the NETTING entangled MANY of the crew on board... Henry VII watched helpless as his beloved MARYROSE SANK
Several attempts to find and raise the MARYROSE were not sucessful until Oct. 11, 1982 when 1/2 of the GREAT MARY ROSE was lifted from the ocean floor near Portsmouth.

REMAINS OF THE MARYROSE
MARYROSE
INSIDE THE SHIP.
Housed at a warehouse in Portesmouth historic dockyard, only 19,000 artefects have been displayed showing what life was like on board. here are some of them displayed below. A 'gold half-sovereign from 1544 bearing an image of Henry VIII'. Many of these were found on board, and it is believed that there may still be some on the Solent bed undiscovered. The strings have long gone, but one can only imagine what the wood would say if it could talk. There is also a nit comb, with nits (hair is itching as I write this, is that pschological?) Many sailors were reluctant to share their combs, I don't think I'd want their unwanted visitors!
