| Mini-synopsis:
Lord Darcy - one of the leaders of the York uprising - is visited in his prison cell by Cromwell who tries to bribe the old man into betraying Robert Aske. But he is disappointed. Darcy's estimation of Aske as ‘a very great man' may be an uncommon act of loyalty in Tudor England, but it is also an impossible accolade to live with; the fate of both men is sealed. Aske is brought to trial for treason in front of a court led by Rich and promptly found guilty. Darcy is beheaded. Charles Brandon takes reluctant leave of his family to begin his unpitying persecution of the Northern rebels to the deep concern of his wife Catherine. Cromwell shows the King a pamphlet written by the English Catholic Cardinal Reginald Pole which condemns Henry as a heretic and an adulterer. This would be merely ungrateful (Henry sponsored Reginald's early education) were it not for the fact that Pole has lately been living in France and visiting the Emperor Charles V as the Pope's representative. Henry orders Sir Francis Bryan to go to Paris and request that the French King, Francis I, hand over Pole to the English or face a revival of hostilities between the two nations. Despite their long friendship and his deep loyalty to Henry, Brandon has not the stomach for the King's vengeance. The heartless and unforgiving persecutions of men, women and children fill him with dread and loathing and he turns to prayer. In the midst of such dark thoughts and deeds, Jane's continued pregnancy is a source of delight to her and her King who makes plans for her coronation after the birth of - what he is convinced will be - his son. He also instructs Edward Seymour to make elaborate preparations for the birth of an heir to include bonfires, nationwide parties and a tournament. Robert Aske, in prison in York, is visited by a priest to hear his last confession. The priest is in fact one of the former Pilgrims and Aske confesses his belief that Cromwell is the devil's messenger. Aske is taken to the scaffold where his wife and children witness his hanging. Cromwell is cheered by the news. Jane's time has finally arrived. The whole court hopes and prays for the safe delivery of a Prince. The labor lasts an agonisingly long time and preparations are made to deliver the baby by section - in which case the mother will likely die. Henry is asked to choose between mother and child. To his great relief, he is sparred the choice by the news that the child has come and it is a son! The Kingdom goes into a convulsion of celebrations and the child is quickly baptised Prince Edward Tudor. Finally, after three Queens and numerous pregnancies, Henry has a male heir to the Tudor dynasty! Henry has perhaps never been happier. But his joy is quickly tempered by news that Jane has fallen into a fever following her long and painful labor. Henry's beloved, uncrowned Queen dies soon after. | | | |
