Mini-synopsis:
The search for a new Queen begins. Pastor Kolling, a German envoy of the Protestant League, visits England. Cromwell hopes to counteract the Catholic influence of the late Jane Seymour by finding a new Protestant wife for his widowed King. Kolling recalls Duke William of Cleves - a stronghold of the Protestant League - has two unmarried sisters, Anne and Amelia. Unaware of Cromwell's plotting, Henry suggests to the French Ambassador his inclination towards taking a French bride. The Ambassador is delighted by the King's interest but, alas, his first choice has just been promised to the King of Scots. Instead, the French King proposes a double marriage: his son to Henry's daughter Mary and Henry's choice of two young daughters of Madame Longeville. The introduction of Henry's ‘Six Articles of Faith' - felt by some to be too Catholic in leaning - has already provoked the resignation of one bishop and caused others to flee to the continent. Henry seems unperturbed. Although Cromwell believes that the articles are not Lutheran enough, he wisely keeps his reservations to himself. His role as matchmaker will, he believes, be of more influence than mere words. To this end, he instructs Sir John Hutton - Ambassador to Netherlands - to draw up a list of potential candidates - making particular inquiries about the Duchess of Milan and Anne of Cleves (Joss Stone). Henry appoints Charles Brandon President of the Privy Council, an important role which makes him the King's representative at court in Henry's absence. It is in many ways an attempt to find comfort. Hutton's report on potential wives reaches the King. While Anne of Cleves is reported to be somewhat dull, Christina, Duchess of Milan receives high marks for beauty, but has a somewhat tarnished reputation regarding her virtue. Immediately fascinated, Henry dispatches Hans Holbein to Milan to make a sketch and instructs Hutton to explore her views on marriage to the English sovereign. The sketch greatly impresses Henry and he orders a full-length painting. But just as his spirits rise his flesh fails -- dramatically. Henry's ulcerous leg confines him to bed where his skin turns black from his blood's contamination. There are fears that he may die. Extra guards are ordered for Henry's children Edward and Mary. To the relief of his court, he is saved by his surgeons. Hutton's return to the Duchess of Milan with news of Henry's continued interest is met with surprising hostility. The teenage aristocrat is unimpressed with Henry's record with wives. Furthermore she is the great-niece of Katherine of Aragon. Thus, she turns down his affections and asks Hutton to leave. The Duchess of Milan's rebuff is followed by the French envoys distain for Henry's desire to interview all potential French candidates as if it were a beauty pageant. This leaves only the two sisters of the Duke of Cleves. Sir John Hutton is dispatched to meet Duke William who is equally unimpressed by the request for a painting of his sisters but agrees to further discussions.

SnowWhiteQueen What happened to Catherine Brandon's baby? 5 Aug 29 2009, 1:02 PM EDT by Reggie19

Charles tells Henry in this episode that Catherine lost the baby. I might have missed something, but earlier in the season Catherine is upset and tells Charles that basically she doesn't want the baby and that it is best that it not live. I understand why she was upset, but I was just wondering if Catherine might have intentionally aborted the pregnancy or was it maybe just a foreshadowing that she would miscarry and the baby would die? I wasn't sure on which, so would like to hear anyone's idea on that.

Also, does Charles and Catherine have any more children? I only noticed the one son from Charles' previous marriage.

innerjuju Casting of Joss Stone as Anne of Cleves 9 May 18 2009, 1:21 AM EDT by BipolarBettie
Thread started: Apr 11 2009, 3:33 PM EDT  Watch
Anne of Cleves was known for not being attractive. In fact, Anne was described by the French ambassador, Charles de Marillac, as tall and slim, "of middling beauty, and of very assured and resolute countenance". She was dark haired, with a rather swarthy complexion, appeared solemn by English standards, and she looked old for her age. Holbein painted her with high forehead, heavy-lidded eyes and a pointed chin.
When Henry rode to meet her at Rochester on her way to London and was promptly disappointed. He felt he had been misled, as everyone had praised Anne's attractions: "She is nothing so fair as she hath been reported," he complained.

Now they have cast the beautiful (and blonde) Joss Stone to play Anne of Cleves? What was the rationale behind this?

karenofbethany French Fiancee? (Spoiler?) (page: 1 2) 34 May 14 2009, 10:31 PM EDT by karenofbethany

I have not seen episode 3.6 yet, was reading the synopsis (thanks to everyone who contributes). Is it true that Henry favored a match with a French lady? I know that he had issues back and forth with Spain and France. If he really was looking at a match politically, it changes my views (a little) on him only being interested in the most attractive wife. I was under the impression that he just saw a lot of pictures and selected those he thought he would like (love) the most. I am sure someone knowledgeable will answer the question, and thanks in advance.
