Mini-synopsis:
November 1537 -- a gloom hangs over England. Sir Robert Packington, English Parliamentarian and friend of Cromwell, is shot dead in a London street. Cromwell suspects the assassination as a warning to him but refuses to speculate who might behind it. For the moment he is more concerned with finding a new bride for his King who has shut himself away in sadness and grief following the death of his much-loved third wife Jane Seymour, mother to his only male heir. The infant - Edward - is being looked after by his half-sister Lady Mary and several of Jane's ladies-in-waiting. A new household will be established for the royal heir at Hampton Court to be headed by Lady Bryan. No expense will be spared in his education and comfort: he is after all, a future King. Another mysterious murder; this time of a young man named Gawan Carew. Cromwell is disturbed by this latest act of violence so close to court . . . so close to power. Soon afterwards, there is a deadly assault on the Sergeant-at-Arms himself - the King's law enforcer - by unidentified swordsmen. With the King in isolation, law and order are beginning to break down at the political heart of the Kingdom. Cromwell is summoned to the secluded King's chamber to bring news. Perhaps prematurely Cromwell proposes remarriage, but Henry is disinterested. Jane is still very much to the forefront of his mind. The King meets with Bishop Stephen Gardiner (Simon Ward) who has been charged with writing the doctrine of the Church of England in consultation with the rest of the Bishops. As usual they have failed to agree on anything and Henry, with growing impatience, has taken the matter into his own hands providing six doctrinal questions which will form the basis of his church. After consultation, the Bishops respond to his ‘six articles of faith' in accordance with Catholic theology. Although the King seems unperturbed by this, Cromwell is most certainly disturbed by this roll-back on revolution. What has happened to his Reformation?!

BEST QUOTES

    • Henry VIII (at Jane's tomb)-"My own darling, one day I shall lie with you again, I promise. And we shall sleep together for eternity."

    • Lady Seymour-"It's a very small thing to you isn't it, Edward?"
    • Edward Seymour-"I think there are more important things, yes."
    • Lady Seymour-"No doubt you're right. But as long as you do, don't expect me to be faithful to you. May I have some more prawns?"

    • Cromwell -"Because in his heart he has always been a true Catholic, except in this one thing: That he will have neither Pope, nor Luther, nor any other man set above him."

    • Jester-"I don't think - are you mad - thinking is dangerous. But I'll wink."

    • Will Somers, the King's fool- "You find the perfect wife. She's sweet, pliable, she even has good ****. On top of that she gives you the son you've always wanted and you let her die...And she's not the only one, poor abandoned Katherine."
    • Henry VIII- "Careful"
    • Will Somers, the King's fool -"And that other one, who's name escapes me...As her head escaped her. All lost! All lost!"

    THE TUDORS EPISODE TRIVIA

    • Will Somers was really Henry VIII's fool and as suggested in the series he was known for sometimes going a little too far; in 1535 The King threatened to kill him with his own hands after Nicholas Carew dared Will to call Queen Anne "a ribald" and Elizabeth "a bastard". Somers, however, survived and served at court during the next three reigns. Will died in June 1560 during the reign of Elizabeth I. Unlike the elderly man depicted in the series, Will was actually younger than Henry.
