DAVID O'HARA

Filming Location: <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/search/title?locations=Cape+Town,+South+Africa" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cape Town, South Africa</a>

Filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.

Director <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Uwe Boll</a> has described the film as "something that's very shocking".

There were no lines prepared for the film according to <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Uwe Boll</a>. In a behind-the-scenes documentary, Boll stated that he considered it Western-minded arrogance to hand the many Darfur extras a script on what to say.

In an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Uwe Boll</a> spoke of how several people playing Darfur victims were indeed from Darfur, and it was hard for them to re-enact scenes of terror in the film.

Because no dialogue had been written for the actors, they had to create their characters fully, and also had to undergo extensive research about Darfur and journalism. This was meant to add to the reality of the filming.

<a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000708/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Billy Zane</a> and <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000411/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Edward Furlong</a> had previously collaborated with <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Uwe Boll</a> on <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383222/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">BloodRayne</a> (2005) and <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1236484/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Stoic</a> (2009) respectively. In addition, <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0518085/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kristanna Loken</a> had previously worked with Boll on two films prior to <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1236471/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Darfur</a> (2009).

A ten-minute behind-the-scenes video was released on the Internet prior to the film's release.

Producer <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0164721/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dan Clarke</a> stated that the film is 'hard to watch' but that it's 'important that people see just how far these atrocities go'.

Great research had been done to make the village sets look authentic. According to producer <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1354153/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Chris Roland</a>, they invited a Darfur refugee to come see the film set for himself. On the way, he was shown drawings and compositions of the production. The man lightly touched the pictures with his fingers, said the single word 'Darfur' and began to cry.

<a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Uwe Boll</a> expressed criticism of the UN and NATO's lack of involvement in preventing Darfur. He hopes the movie will help raise awareness of the issues and force governments to pledge better help.

Abdul Karim, one of the Sudanese participants, suffered a breakdown while filming a scene of losing his family in a raid. He had lost his family in Darfur.

The film sets were made with actual materials as they'd build it in Sudan.

Don Wright, member of the human rights group Amnesty International, noted that the film was very accurate to the issue based on the reports of Darfur he'd seen.

In Canada, the filmmakers made a deal with STAND Canada, which is Canada's leading organization for youth led anti-genocide advocacy and activism. The film was given a ten-city tour across the country, which included Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Edmonton.

PLOT OF MOVIE :
The plot of Darfur revolves around six Western journalists who visit a small village in Darfur in western Sudan under the escort of a squad of troops of the African Union peacekeeping mission. When they learn the brutal state sponsored militia called the Janjaweed are heading towards the village, they are faced with an impossible decision: leave Sudan and report the atrocities to the world, or risk their own lives and stay in the hopes of averting a certain slaughter.

While most of them flee back to their base, two of the journalists, Freddie Smith, and Theo Schwartz, decide to stay behind along with the Nigarian commander of the AU unit, Captain Jack Tobamke, to try to save the villagers when the Arab Janjaweed enter the village and begin to indiscriminaly kill all the men, women, and children. Despite their efforts to save some villagers, Captain Tobamke, Theo, and Freddie are all killed one by one in the subsequent shootout with the Janjaweed, but not after killing or wounding a few dozen of the savage milita. The surviving Janjaweed then burn the village to the ground and move on, presumably to continue their genocide rampage across the Darfur landscape.

The final scene shows the female member of the journalist team, Malin Lausberg, who fled with most of the other reporters and AU soldiers during the Janjaweed attack, return to the destroyed village the next day with a group of AU soldiers only to find everyone dead, including two of her colleagues. But she finds an infant that Freddie protected and gave to Theo, who hid it under his body as he lay dying. That very child lived to be the sole survivor of the massacre. Malin takes the baby with her as she and the rest of the AU troops leave the destroyed village behind.

TRIVIA :
Most of the filming was done with hand-held cameras to achieve an authenticity of realism. <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Uwe Boll</a> did the same thing with his previous film <a class="external" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1236484/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Stoic</a> (2009).

Filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.
