It's hard to choose an exact one but my choices are Glenda Jackson, Helen Mirren, & Cate Blanchett. My top pick would be Glenda Jackson. Elizabeth R was a stunning movie and Jackson portrayed Elizabeth I beautifully.

I disagree that JRM makes a [great] HVIII. Keith Michell was the ultimate HENRY!! Richard Burton second!
JRM might be a [great actor] but not as HVIII. I wish someone, someday would do the story of HVIII and his 6 wives the true historical way............NOT the HOLLYWOOD way!! For once get it right! Get the facts right because people think that what is on the TUDORS is the TRUTH!

As time has gone by, Henry 8 has been largely (pardon the pun) misrepresented to show the bloated, ill, ale-swilling older fellow he was preceding his death. However, when digging deeper in recorded history, Henry - as represented here - was a calculating and brilliant young lion. Much of his behaviors and actions that seem so close to madness when seen through the eyes of our century, actually were not that off-base when taken in the context of what life was like during the period in which he lived, not to mention the experiences he had as a child and young man growing up in an environment that most certainly had affected him psychologically. I like how JRM and the writers of the Tudors have chosen to depict Henry. Though I know even this is not completely accurate, as no modern representation can be, I like that someone is looking at a different Henry than the one we've unfortunately come to know. I once played one of the wives of Henry VIII in a play, and took the opportunity to study up on the period and the royal family of that era. I choose to view Henry differently than he is usually portrayed, more in line with some of what the writers of The Tudors are doing. How do you see the real Henry VIII?

When you are reading books about the Tudors characters, be them fiction or fact, do you envisage certain actors as the characters? If you do, which ones do you think of?
Henry VIII is always Keith Michell, I do not think you can get much more like Henry then him. Katherine of Aragon is usually Maria Doyle Kennedy although when it is something about her youth I always picture the fair haired girl from Henry VIII: Mind of a Tyrant Anne Boleyn is Helena Bonham Carter Jane Seymour usually changes from Anita Briem when she is unmarried to Emilia Fox when she becomes Queen Anne of Cleves I always imagine to look like the woman from David Starkey’s six wives mini series Katherine Howard changes. It used to be soley Emily Blunt but now if I read something which portrays her as bad I always think of Tamzin Merchant because up to now I find her very irritating Catherine Parr is Claire Hollman though i am hoping that Joley Richardson will soon change that, we are in dire need of a good Cathy Parr Mary is Sarah Bolger when she was young of course, and Joanna Whalley when older Young Elizabeth is Anne Marie Duff unless she’s being annoying where it turns to Queenie from Blackadder :-D and Old Elizabeth is Judi Dench Edward I always think of that cute boy from Henry VIII (2003) who was in Harry Potter when he’s young and the boy from lady Jane when he’s a teen You can add more characters if you want I was just doing the general family. I would love to hear your views and see who really has had a lasting effect on you

Does anyone know who the actors are in David Starkey's Six Wives series? I wish I could see them without the voice over narrative of Starkey. Is there a movie out with these characters playing out their parts in entirety? I think the actor here did a great job & looked like Henry VIII.

UK artists and publisher of the Manga Shakespeare series has announced last October that they will adapt "Henry VIII" into a manga graphic novel that will be available in April to commemorate the 500th anniversary Henry VIII's accession to the throne. The Manga Shakespeare series has also adapted many of the Bard's plays and are available for purchase on Amazon and other online and retail book providers. The production blog is already available online with sneak peak character and scene sketches, which are lovely!
http://mangashakespearehenryviii.blogspot.com/ From the production blog: "In a unique partnership the 'UK Young Publisher of the Year' SelfMadeHero publishes Henry VIII as part of its acclaimed Manga Shakespeare series in association with Historic Royal Palaces, the charity responsible for Hampton Court Palace and four other uninhabited royal palaces in and around London. The manga version of Henry VIII was originally a play written by William Shakespeare that has strong connections with Hampton Court Palace, which you will find out about through this production blog. It will be published in April 2009 will coincide with the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne. The artist for Henry VIII is Patrick Warren, who illustrated Richard III in the Manga Shakespeare series in 2007. Patrick is researching period costumes, interiors and exteriors at Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London to create a manga blend of historical accuracy and Shakespearean drama. The team behind the manga will be posting character sketches and page layouts from Patrick, snippets from the script as well as images from Hampton Court Place that are used by Patrick as he creates Henry VIII. We'll also post stories about Hampton Court Palace's connection to Henry VIII's story and events at the Palace connected to the manga."

Dame Tutin played Anne Boleyn in the acclaimed PBS series "The Six Wives of Henry VII. I don't expect that there will be alot of comments to this thread. I just thought that the fans of this series might like seeing her photo.

There's loads of films and programmes about Henry and his wives, but who are your favourite actors and actresses for each of them? I am aware there are less portrayals of the last three wives but we have to do the best with what we have and hope for more in the future!
Mine are: Henry- Keith Michell Catherine of Aragon- Maria Doyle Kennedy Anne Boleyn- Genevieve Bujold and Jodhi May Jane Seymour- Emilia Fox Anne of Cleves- Elvi Hale (though I like the woman in David Starkey documentary even if she didn’t speak) Katherine Howard- Emily Blunt Katherine Parr- Rosalie Crutchley
