EVENING STANDARD MAGAZINE UK ARTICLE October 24, 2008:

He's steaming up the screen in The Tudors and emblazoned on buses across town as the face of Dunhill. Henry Cavill is one Channel Island hottie!
Henry Cavill is a leading man in the making. Casino Royale director Martin Campbell thought that it should be Cavill's beefed-up torso emerging from the sea in the James Bond film, but Daniel Craig, with a bigger name, not to mention chest, pipped him to the part. He was also on the short list to play the Caped Crusader in 2005's Batman Begins, which went to fellow Brit Christian Bale, & to step into Christopher Reeve's red pants in the 2006 revival Superman Returns.

But Cavill finally got his break, & cape, when he won the part of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, in BBC/HBO's steamy TV drama The Tudors. Now filming its third series, Cavill plays a close confidant to Jonathan Rhys Meyers' Henry VIII.

The 25-year-old Jersey born actor is impossibly polite & well-spoken. He lives in Dublin, where The Tudors is filmed, cavorting about in a codpiece for six months of the year, leaving the other half for other projects. In spring 2008 he worked on Woody Allen's film Whatever Works, playing an English actor who has resettled in New York. "It's a different scene from The Tudors. Woody Allen will do a four-page scene in one shot, which keeps it hyper-realistic. With period stuff, it takes much longer." Allen cast him opposite Larry David & Evan Rachel Wood. "I only got one scene with Larry, but what a clever, hilarious man." Last year, Cavill filmed Creek with Joel Schumacher, a revenge story in which he becomes caught up in an occult experiment dating back to the Third Reich. Both are due for release next year, & there's also a burgeoning modeling career: at 6ft 1in, Cavill has broad shoulders, a jaw to match, & is currently emblazoned across buses as the face of Dunhill's London fragrance campaign.
Cavill was discovered, at 17, when a casting agent came to Stowe, Buckinghamshire, looking for a new face to play Jim Caviezel's son in The Count of Monte Cristo, with Guy Pearce in the film as well. Cavill said farewell to his textbooks & left Stowe without completing A levels in history, English & theatre studies.

The next year, aged 18, he filmed his first steamy sex scene opposite Emmanuelle Seigner in Laguna. "I've always fancied older women," he says. But according to Seigner, she had to ply him with drinks to calm his nerves.

Cavill says he is naturally on the chubby side & has to work hard at staying trim. "I don't go to the gym every day, but i'll tend to blast it for a couple of weeks before a shirtless scene."
On his days off, he plays computer games like World of Warcraft, "nice escapism", online with his father & brothers. "Or sometimes I'll just recover from hangovers", after nights out with fellow actor Max Brown, who plays Edward Seymour in The Tudors. He calls his other costar Sam Neill, of Jurassic Park fame, "a very nice man", who organises dinner parties at his Dublin home for the cast. It seems Rhys Meyers keeps himself to himself offset, presumably busy with his girlfriend Reena Hammer.
Cavill is number four of 5 boys. Piers, the eldest, is a former army officer looking to change careers. Nik is a major in the Marines. Simon has just started working in financial services, but used to be a bodybuilder, and Charlie, the youngest, is in marketing. Henry's father Colin is not a native Channel Islander but his mother Marianne is. "She was a house mum for years taking care of five boys, & now works as a secretary in a bank. Dad was a stockbroker, but keeps shifting jobs. I couldn't really tell you what he does."

With the itinerant lifestyle of an actor, Cavill has had trouble holding down a relationship. "It takes a strong woman to be with me because I'm always hopping around, and not always there. It's really tough." He broke up with a girlfriend recently: "Of course it's a two-way thing; you're both missing each other. I think it can be difficult for the other person because often there will be kissing and simulated sex, which I'm sure must be very hard to watch." But he is confident he will find the balance one day. "With people like Brad & Angelina, they've been working for such a long time, I'm sure they have a certain understanding of each other and the job." The boy is obviously thinking big.

MEN'S HEALTH MAGAZINE September 2008:

HENRY'S HOW-TO'STIPS ON FEELING AT EASE IN THE WORLD

CHOOSE PERSONALITY OVER LOOKS:

Cavill's favorite places to travel are those that have the most charm & character- whether it's the laid-back outdoor culture of Perth, Australia, or the always-frenetic pace of New York city. "I prefer a place that has a certain energy to it- something with soul & its own identity, its own vibe," he says. "A place where people tell you they're from, proudly."

COMFORT IS ESSNETIAL:

When he hits the road, Cavill likes to wear a comfortable sweater & cozy socks to keep his feetwarm. "I've traveled enough on planes to realize it's not about how you look- it's about how you feel," he says. The actor's preferred in-flight entertainment? A fantasy book from his favorite author, Robert Jordon.

ALWAYS DRESS THE PART:

In his off time in Dublin, Cavill kicks back in jeans and a t-shirt or Henley topped with a leather jacket. "If it's light, you can wear it most of the year, and it can stop you from getting drenched," he says. As the face of Dunhill cologne, Cavill includes in his formal wardrobe plenty of Dunhill suits and the label's cashmere-wool overcoat.

SEEK OUT THE LOCAL FLAVORS:

After a long day on the set of The Tudors, Cavill likes to grab a steak at Shanahan's on the Green & follow it up with a beer at Kehoe's Pub. "When you go to Dublin, it's all about Guinness," he explains. What makes a Kehoe's pint superior? "I've heard the trick of Guinness is how continuously it is poured. If the pipes in the pub are constantly working, it will always taste fresh."

Interview Prediction: Henry Cavill April 2008

Those impossibly handsome British actors, with their classical pedigree, rakish charisma, and mischievous smirks, are certainly a breed apart. And the fact that 24-year-old Henry Cavill effectively plays one on the Showtime series The Tudors, which has just returned for its second season, is proof enough that the tradition runs deep. Of course, Cavill doesn't actually play an actor on the show. He plays Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk: elevated commoner, backroom schemer, and close confidant of Jonathan Rhys Meyer's King Henry VIII. But in Cavill's hands, Brandon is every bit the seasoned thespian- as one had to be to survive in Henry's court- all inward calculation and solicitous glances.
Cavill's own early days as an actor were spent in the theater. Then things got interesting. Based on a small sampling of film and television work, he was invited to audition for the title role in Superman Returns, and wound up as a surprise contender to become the next James Bond. Suffice it to say, he didn't get those roles, which is all the same, since he isn't the kind of talent you pour into a mold. He's the kind you watch grow. Cavill can next be seen in Joel Schumacher's Town Creek, a thriller filled with twists and turns. So don't pity poor Henry Cavill. Keep an eye on him- if you can.

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL MAGAZINE October 2008:

PREPARE FOR TAKEOFF

THE TUDORS HENRY CAVILL CASTS OFF HIS ROYAL FINERY AND LETS OUT HIS INNER BAD BOY WITH MODERN GEAR.
O, HENRY!
It's no surprise that Henry Cavill is on everyone's radar these days: He's a lead on Showtime's Emmy-nominated The Tudors and the face of Dunhill cologne, and he has two films on deck. "I've been fairly unlucky in the past," he admits, referring to his handful of almost-roles, "but whether I've been unlucky or indeed lucky, you don't really know." We think his luck's going to hold. With his cool British charm, enviable good looks, and undeniable talent, who could stop him? On The Tudors, Cavill plays the notorious Charles Brandon, an elevated commoner and schemer whose character evolves from a playboy in season one to the politically aware and socially conscious duke by season two. But don't typecast this rising star into period roles (he has also appeared in The Count Of Monte Cristo, Tristan & Isolde, and Stardust). "I used to say playing Alexander the Great [would be my ideal part], but all things change in a young man's mind." Look for Cavill on the big screen mastering two very different characters, in Joel Schumacher's Creek and in Whatever Works, an upcoming Woody Allen film in which he plays a younf actor in New York. " I'm really getting into exploring different aspects of my personality and putting them into roles."
A self-professed classic dresser who loves the smart casual look and suits at all times of the year, Cavill gets a kick out of dressing for his Dunhill shoots and for magazine spreads like ours. "I had the biggest fortune trying on some interesting things for the LA Confidential fashion shoot. I must have looked at some things and gone, 'Oh... I would never wear that," but then after trying them on I went, 'Wow! This actually looks kind of cool.' " We couldn't agree more.

SHOWBIZ IRELAND October 1, 2008:

When it comes to handsome devil-ness there are very few actors that can give Jonathan Rhys Meyers a run for his money. But on the set of The Tudors British actor Henry Cavill turns just as many heads as our Jonny in his swanky period garbs. The Stardust actor got-down with a bevy of models at Krystle at the weekend...

Actor Henry Cavill is a regular visitor to these shores due to his ongoing role in The Tudors. Away from the cameras he's been spotted out partying with his co-stars, which include Joss Stone, at many a Dublin hotspot. On Saturday night the boy Henry chanced a session at VIP club Krystle, where the lovely ladies came-out in their droves. Good choice.
