The sequel to Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" will be released next week. It promises to be an amazing reading experience. "Wolf Hall" has become my favourite book of all time. Its literary expressiveness, rich themes, exquisite language and of course, beloved subject has made it an incomparable book, and now, after reading it three times in a row this past months, I am on pins and needles waiting for my copy of the sequel to arrive.
I hope others are excited by this book as well and would like to discuss it here. The American edition shows a close up of the standard portrait of Anne Boleyn but softened. Here is the link : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/0805090037/ref=dp_image_text_z_0?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books By the way, the title refers to a summons by the justices at Westminster, to the Constable of the Tower to "bring up the bodies of Sir Francis Weston, knt, Henry Norris, Esq., William Brereton, Esq., and Mark Smeaton, gent," for trial.

Does anyone know where to find good Tudor style fonts for microsoft word? I have searched under 15th and 16th century style fonts but havent found anything that looks close to what I want. From watching The Tudors and other shows about The Tudors I have seen font used thats wonderful but cant find anything like it. For example on the show when Cromwell is writing documents or like on David Starkey's Henry VIII The Mind of a Tyrant, thats the font I'd like to have :)

I'm currently reading Joanna Denny's biography of Anne Boleyn and I am shocked at the way she has such a bee in her bonnet over KOA.!! I admire both Katherine and Anne for different reasons but the way Denny is going on Anne was the darling of the Protestant reformation and KOA was just a spiteful vindictive bitter old crone! I don't think i have read a more biased biography. Has anyone read it and what were your thoughts?

i just saw the trailer yesterday for a film coming out later this year that will probably interest many of us. It is called "Anonymous," it is directed by German director Roland Emmerich, and it takes place at the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign. It will feature Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth, and her daughter, Joely Richardson ( our own Catherine Parr) as the younger Princess Elizabeth. It will have two intertwining plot lines: the Essex rebellion and the story that Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, wrote Shakespeare's plays. Rhys Ifans will play Oxford.
The notion that Shakespeare did not write his plays has been around for centuries. For those interested in more of this theory, there is a wonderful book that looks at the history of this theory, called "Contested Will," by James Shapiro. I also read last year a terrific murder mystery about the same subject, (Shakespeare and his pretenders,) called "Interred with their Bones" by Jennifer Lee Carrell. Anyway, the movie "Anonymous" looks fascinating and will entertain us Tudor fans, I am sure.

I have never seen The Virgin Queen but after seeing those photos of Mary and Elizabeth together I have to say that Mary was the prettier sister(about time)Elizabeths hairline is receeding, her face is too pale and gaunt considering she was the younger sister and she had wrinkles a plenty.

Okay she's not technically a Tudor (just a distant cousin) but I thought it might be worth while to start a thread about the new movie that's coming out (God only knows when). For those who haven't already heard the news from the grapevine, Scarlette Johanson has been cast as the starring role in "Mary, Queen of Scots". So far I've heard that the production has switched directors (from John Curran to Peter Noyce) and the majority of filming is to be done in Ireland! (just like the Tudors series) Has anybody else heard about the film? Please share info :)

Hillary Mantel's sequel to "Wolf Hall" is scheduled to be published in the UK on May 19th and in the US three days later on May 22nd.
That date is of course very meaningful to us Tudor fans: it is, of course, the anniversary of the execution of Anne Boleyn. The sequel will focus on Anne's downfall. This is an ongoing controversy here on our beloved Wiki, so it will be very interesting to see how MS Mantel handles it.

I found a bit of discrepancy that may want to be addressed in Kelly Hart's book which seems like a bit of a no brainer but regardless, the quote states: "With Henry Fitzroy, Henry VIII did nothing publicly for the boy until he was six years old, past the age at which a child was in most danger of succumbing to a childhood disease."
Two problems with this. One; Henry Fitzroy's name itself showed that the King acknowledged him since the name "Fitzroy" means "King of the Son" in Anglo-Saxon tradition. If this wasn't a public acknowledgement of his paternity, then he would have been given his mother's last name. Secondly, Henry Fitzroy had the extreme honor of having Cardinal Thomas Wolsey as his godfather. Would this honor be given to a bastard of suspected paternity? No, very clearly Henry Fitzroy was addressed from the beginning. Though he was given various titles at the age of 6, there is clearly something very wrong with this misconception.

It's hard to choose an exact one but my choices are Glenda Jackson, Helen Mirren, & Cate Blanchett. My top pick would be Glenda Jackson. Elizabeth R was a stunning movie and Jackson portrayed Elizabeth I beautifully.

Quite a few people have been interested in the idea of us having a Tudor book to read collectively and discuss. I thought a good way for us to select one fairly would be for us to post on a thread one or two that we would enjoy reading Then have a poll to find the favourite when we have a decent amount to chose from.. The book should be a fictional book on the Tudors. We can vote on a factual book to read another time if people would like.

Just testing the water at this stage. I just wondered if as well as the book read we could consider viewing and discussing a film set in The Tudor period. We could maybe fit it in between a couple of our books. Or maybe a little later, let me know what you think. Many thaniks.
