Queen Anne Boleyn gave birth to a baby girl at Greenwich Palace. The baby was named Elizabeth after her two grandmothers. She would go on to became a most famous Queen and her reign was known as The Golden Age. The Country saw many changes duirng her long reign (1558 - 1603). The establishment of the Anglican Church, the restoration of the currency, the introduction to a Poor Law and the circumnavigation of the globe. Also, of course, the famous defeat of the Spanish Armada. Her era saw the flourishing of the arts. She was blessed with brilliant advisors like William Cecil - like her father she seemed to have the knack of picking good people The Queen died in March 1603 when she was great mourned by the nation.

Catherine had been the last of Henry's 6 wives and she had outlived him. Before her marriage to the King she had been in love with Thomas Seymour and when she was widowed she married him. - some felt with rather indecent haste. She became pregnant for the first time at the age of 35 years. She gave birth to a daughter and died 6 days later of puerperal fever. Catherine is buried at Sudeley Castle.

It saddened the Queen's celebrations after the victory against the Spanish Armada to hear that her favourite had died. He had been on his way to Buxton in Derbyshire to take the baths. He had been unwell, but his death was unexpected. He had been the great favourite of the Queen since the very start of her reign. Indeed, when she had fallen gravely ill with smallpox it was Robert she had requested to be made Protector of the Realm. He was a man of many interests - he was a patron of the arts (100 books were dedicated to him) He was also a pioneer of new industries and he concerned himself with relieving unemployment amongst the poor.. He also organized many features of the Queens Coronation.
I have a connection with Robert because I often work at Kew Palace which is situated within the world famous Botanical. Gardens. The Palace is built on Tudor foundations and it is thought tht it might well have been Robert Dudley's home, although we certainly cannot be sure. However, we know he did have one of his homes at Kew and Elizabeth used to visit him there. It is certainly a nice thought that I might be working where Robert once used to live..

I was just reading the profile of Cardinal Wolsey when I read about the betrothal of Charles V to Princess Mary. I am thinking how was this going to work? Henry and Katherine had no other heirs, so what would be the purpose of this marriage? Uniting England and Spain? Did Henry and Katherine hope to have more children and it would be a great opportunity for Mary to become Queen of Spain and the Holy Roman Empress? Your thoughts?

On the 1st September 1532 she was created Marquess of Pembroke - a title she held in her own right. (This was the first hereditary peerage to be granted to a woman) In October of that yeatr she held a position of honour at a meeting between Henry and the French King in Calais.
The beautiful red dresss Natalie wore for this ceremony on the programme was one of my favourites in the entire series.

Someone recently showed me a catholic website that featured a story about Anne Boleyn. It said that after Bishop Fisher was executed Anne had the head brought to her so she could slap it! She caught her hand on a tooth which caused a wound which never healed. I've heard most of the crazy anti-Anne stories but never this one. Does anyone know if this was something made up at the time or a more recent invention ?

| royalfalcon | Who Is Your Favourite Real Life Tudor Character? | 17 | Aug 31 2011, 4:17 AM EDT by AnyaTudor | ||||

I saw this idea on another wiki and thought it would be good to introduce here. We all love the Tudor period and find it extremely interesting. The question I am asking is do you have a favourite character of this period. and if so why do you like them so much.? You can enter more than one person, you might actually have several. favourites. Remember these are the real characters from history not from the programme.. Also don't worry if somebody else has entered your favourite, because the qualities that attracted them might not be the qualities that make them so appealing to you.
Quite a few of you know that I really like Robert Dudley. I have been totally fascinated by the entire Dudley family. I feel that they have been given a poor press over the years. Robert's father John and his grandfather Edmund Dudley were both executed for treason, but when you read into the circumstances, I think there are reasons why they did what they did and I would not personally call their actions treasonous. Recent historians have been a little kinder to them. . I particularly like Derek Wilson's book The Uncrowned Kings of England for his sympathetic review of the Dudley family. Robert in particular I have chosen because by his portraits I certainly think he was a handsome man and he is the person I think that Queen Elizabeth truly loved. I also think that he must have had great charisma. Elizabeth had many favourites but Robert remained her number one favourite right up to his death in 1588. She also kept a letter he sent to her at the end of his life. It was found in her bedside drawer when she died and she had written on it - "His Last Letter".

I watched Elizabeth earlier today and was wondering what you all thought of it. It was a good film, though I did catch some historical errors. But the director, Shekar Kapur, does state he made this film based on Elizabeth's personality not the history. Michael Hirst did a great job writing it and I could see how it was very similar to the Tudors. What are your thoughts?

I just recently watched this documentary and thought it was very educational and interesting. However something caught my interest. I think I may have heard of it before, but Starkey mentioned that Jane was coached by Sir Nicholas Carew who was head of the Catholic Faction at court. I believe I may have also heard that Chapuys was the one coaching Jane but I'm not too sure about that. Your thoughts?

I have been on fairly intimate terms with Thomas Howard for the last 18 months or so. Before you start to raise your eyebrows, I should explain that he is my principle roleplay character. In this time he has certainly managed to get under my skin somewhat. Although he is viewed as an arch conspirator, this is pretty much the way courtiers survived in the 16th century Tudor world.. Thomas Howard served Henry very loyally as far as I can tell for most of the entire duration of Henry's reign. He was a fine soldier. He helped defeat the Scots at Flodden. He shared command with The Earl of Shrewsbury at The Pilgrimage of Grace. He was married twice , his first wife was Anne of York a daughter of Edward IV and his second wife was Elizabeth Stafford daughter of The Duke of Buckingham.
Howard was above all a great survivor - two of his nieces were married to Henry VIII and both were executed, It has been pointed out that for him to still retain the support of the King speaks volumes for his skill as a courtier. He did fall foul of the King at the end of Henry's reign, but again, his luck held with Henry dying just before the Duke was due to be executed. Howard remained in The Tower for the whole duration of Edward's reign. He was let out when Mary came to the throne at which time he was 80 years old. He survived long enough to command the forces sent to put down the Wyatt rebellion. He died at his home in Kenningthall on the 25th August 1554. Rest in Peace Your Grace!

The only connection I have to The Tudors is through Clan Stuart. My family and I are connected to Mary, Queen of Scots. Shes kinda like a first cousin I think, or a distant cousin. Either way, I honestly have to say those who claim to be direct descendant of Henry Tudor kinda have me thinking it's possible then it's not. We all know they never recorded many things that well in those days. But, then again Henry only ever acknowledged two mistresses: Mary Boleyn & Bessie Blount. So, I can't really say he doesn't or does have direct descendants.
Anyways, tell me your opinion!

Charles Brandon was a great friend of King Henry VIII. He served him loyally until his death. His father before him had been standard bearer to King Henry VII and was killed at the Battle of Bosworth - it is said that he was killed at the hand of King Richard III personally. Brandon had been married to Henry's younger sister Mary and when he died Henry had him buried at St George's Chapel, Windsor at his own expense.

Now that I think of it, the rhym: Peter Peter Pumkin eater, had a wife and couldn't keep her. He put her in a pumpkin shell, and there he kept her very well. Reminds me of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves. But I think that is more of a coisidence.

John Dudley was executed at The Tower of London. He was found guilty of treason for the attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the English throne. Ironically the jury was comprised of many men who also took part in the attempt. Opinions have varied over the years as to the extent of Dudley's involvement. Many historians now think that the decision was primarily Edward's to remove Mary and Elizabeth from the line of succession. However, there is no denying that John Dudley would have benefitted as his son Guildford was married to Jane Grey. But then all Henry's senior courtiers were ambitious men. Many have also thought that Dudley's indecision in securing Mary after Edward died was indicative of his state of mind. Dudley was regarded as one of the finest soldiers of his time and such indicision would have been uncharacteristic..
John Dudley was a man well liked by the King Henry. He held several positions of high office in Henry's reign including Lord High Admiral, Earl Marshal and Lord Great Chamberlain. After his death the Venetian Ambassador said of him "the friends of England must lament the loss of all his qualities , with that single exception (his last rashness).
