This hat is a 'butterfly' or 'flowerpot' hennin, dating from the 1470's. It is similar to the hat worn by Elizabeth Woodville in the picture accompanying my posts. The dress (made from charity shop curtains!) is a Burgundian houppelande, worn between 1450 and 1490. The black velvet belt is sewn with fake pearls and the hat and bag have fake pearls and are trimmed with gold ribbon in a diamond pattern. This is a gown based on the style of the 1490's (reign of Henry VII) made from bronze taffeta with an underskirt and undersleeves of rust silk decorated with gold feathers. The sleeves and hem are trimmed with (fake) fur. The hat is an Italian-style stuffed roll, or balzo, trimmed with ribbon and fake pearls, and there is a matching drawstring bag. MY VITALS Home town: Brechin, North-East Scotland Location: Brechin - small town 40 miles south of Aberdeen ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MORE ABOUT ME... I joined this wiki because: I reallty enjoy the opportunity for historial discussion with fellow enthusiasts. I studied Scottish History and Law at Edinburgh University, but rarely have the chance to discuss historical issues in my day-to day-life. I work in Aberdeen for the Scottish Government in the field of child law and have two daughters, both students, and five cats. I still read a lot of history, particularly relating to the fifteenth century, and specialise in the Hispanic kingdoms in the fifteenth century. The best word to describe me is: Pragmatic Interests: I am a member of an Aberdeen-based re-enactment society called Schiltron which specialises in the fifteenth century. This involves dressing up in medieval costume and some truly weird and wonderful hats, which I love making. We do presentations on armour and dress at various events in North East Scotland, often at the numerous medieval castles which survive in this area. If there are any fellow wiki members who live in this area, we are always looking for new members -please check out our website. This is a 'steeple hennin', dating from 1460 onwards. Some of these were almost three feet high! I also enjoy reading, films and television. Favorite movies: Goodfellas, Jabberwocky, The Player, Fargo, North by Northwest, Truly Madly Deeply, The Hour of the Pig, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Galaxy Quest, Life of Brian Favorite TV shows: 30 Rock, Mock the Week, True Blood, University Challenge, Dexter, The Inbetweeners, Mastermind, Frasier, Burn Notice, Outnumbered My hero(es): Ferdinand of Aragon. Yes, I know this is a controversial choice, but he has been my favourite character in history for many years. I admire his courage, charisma, intelligence, resilience and irrepressible sense of humour I also admire the Emperor Augustus, Oswy of Northumbria, and Robert the Bruce. Historically speaking, I have a soft spot for ruthless bastards who overcome the odds and come out on top! My superpower is:Time travel (I wish!) If I could live anywhere, it would be: I'm quite happy in Brechin, although warmer weather would be nice! This hat (which doesn't go with this dress but with the bronze taffeta shown above and below) is a copy of a hat worn by Mary of Burgundy in 1480. The false ponytail comes out of the top of the hat! My dream job(s): I like my current job What else you should know about me: The picture accompanying my posts is of Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward 1V and Henry V111's grandmother. I am not a big fan of Elizabeth as a person, but I love her costume - I have a copy of it. Taffeta gown worn with French hood Juliana is the Latin form of Jillian. The name Juliana, which I use for my medieval actitivities, was already taken when I joined the Wiki. The real Juliana-Angela, Duchess of Frias and Countess of Castelnuevo, (1508 - 1559), was a niece of Katharine of Aragon, daughter of the eldest of Katharine's four illegitmate half-sisters. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAY HELLO!
