There are so many reasons why I love Queen Katherine of Aragon. She was such a strong brave women who always stayed strong to her beliefs and never gave in even when under extreme duress. She was beautiful both inside and out. Katherine was raised to be the Queen of England a role in which she exceeded in. Henry loved and respected Katherine and in their first years of marriage he truly valued her opinion regarding political matters. Katherine was made regent of England when Henry went to France on a military campaign, and when the Scots invaded England Katherine in her role as Regent sent an army North to meet them and defeat them. She was a very compassionate and kind women whose ability to forgive those who treated her badly was amazing. Katherine's faith in God kept her strong throughout her tribulations and that inspires me. Katherine was a loving devoted wife to her husband and an amazing mother to her daughter the Princess Mary. Her husband never deserved her. She never forgot who she was and always conducted herself with the greatest dignity even while in the worst conditions. To this day she is beloved by the people and in my mind will always be the Queen of Hearts.
I love Mary and have always felt she is very much misunderstood. As a child Mary was very loved by both of her parents. With Henry even gushing "this child never cries" and referring to her as "The greatest pearl in the Kingdom". Now imagine spending years basking in that kind of affection from both parents to seeing your father treating your mother terribly and separating your from her. In turn being made illegitimate and a basterd. I believe Mary never got over this and the separation from her mother, they were so close and one can only imagine how poor Mary must have felt in not being allowed to see Katherine even when she was dieing. Mary was not a bad Queen, she was a Catholic Queen trying to rule a Protestant country. I think Mary spent her life trying to regain the love she had as a child but sadly never found it.
There are many reasons why I admire Sir Thomas More, he was a very intelligent man who unusually for this era had all of his five daughters educated to a high standard. Thomas was the author of many works most notably Utopia. He was a man of great faith and refused to compromise his religion saying "No earthly man will compromise mine, not even a prince" and "I die the Kings loyal servant but Gods first". He was very much a family man who preferred to be at home with his family rather than at court which was once again unusual for the time. He was so brave and dignified right up to his death.
Cardinal Fisher was one of Katherine of Aragon's chief supporters and most trusted councillors. John even appeared in the Legate court in Katherine's behalf and declared himself ready to die on behalf of the indissolubility of Henry and Katherine's marriage. He met his death with exceptional courage and bravery and I found his execution very very moving.
I find many are quick to label Jane Seymore as weak, meek and unintelligent. While she may not have been as educated as those before her I couldn't agree with that. I don't see her as meek, I see her as being wise enough to know when to know to stop pushing Henry on things. I admire her kindness to the Princess Mary and her efforts to see Mary reinstated in the succession and to see her return to court.
