Kimbolton Castle located in Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire (2 hours north of London) | Kimbolton Castle, last home of Queen Katherine of Aragon; she died here on January 7, 1536. It is now Kimbolton Boys' School. One of Katherine's dower chests remains here. |
Peterborough Cathedral located In Peterborough, Cambridgeshire (2 hours north of London) Katherine's grave | Burial place of Queen Katherine of Aragon, the former Peterborough Abbey is now Peterborough Cathedral. Katherine was buried on January 29, 1536, according to ceremony prescribed for a Princess Dowager of Wales, not for a Queen of England. Neither Henry VIII nor her daughter Mary Tudor (who wasn't permitted) attended her funeral. Centuries later, Queen Mary, consort of King George V, commissioned a sign over her tomb that reads "Katharine Queen of England" - the title she was denied at the time of her burial. Today, it's common to find the tomb decorated with flowers and pomegranates. The anniversary of her burial is usually celebrated annually at the Cathedral with a special service. In 1587, Mary Queen of Scots was also interred at Peterbourgh, until her body was moved to Westminster Abbey at the request of her son. |
